Increasing the Strain Resistance of Si/SiO2 Interfaces for Flexible Electronics.

Understanding the changes that occur in the micro-mechanical properties of semiconductor materials is of utmost importance for the design of new flexible electronic devices, especially to control the properties of newly designed materials. In this work, we present the design, fabrication, and application of a novel tensile-testing device coupled to FTIR measurements that enables in situ atomic investigations of samples under uniaxial tensile load. The device allows for mechanical studies of rectangular samples with dimensions of 30 mm × 10 mm × 0.5 mm. By recording the alternation in dipole mo

Removing Acrylic Conformal Coating with Safer Solvents for Re-Manufacturing Electronics.

Conformal coating is typically composed of polymeric film and is used to protect delicate electronic components such as printed-circuit boards. Without removing conformal coating, it would be difficult to repair these complicated electronics. Methylene chloride, also called dichloromethane (DCM), has a widespread usage in conformal coating stripper products. The high toxicity of DCM increases human health risk when workers are exposed to DCM during the conformal coating removal processes. Therefore, the replacement of DCM would be beneficial to greatly improve the overall safety profile for wo

Occupational dermatitis from soldering flux among workers in the electronics industry.

Although numerous occupational irritants and allergens have been known to cause contact dermatitis in the electronics industry, soldering flux is seldom mentioned. Soldering flux used in the electronics industry can cause both irritant and allergic contact dermatitis. Irritant dermatitis is commoner than allergic contact dermatitis. Aminoethylethanolamine, a constituent of some fluxes, is a sensitizer. Dermatitis tends to start over the periungual area and spread to the finger shafts and sometimes the wrists. The use of cotton gloves by workers appeared to aggravate the problem. Prophylactic m

A Self-Healing Magnetoelectric Sensor with Pain Sensing for Underwater Soft Electronics.

Replicating the skin's ability to sense touch, feel pain, and heal itself is key to developing the next generation of durable soft electronics. These capabilities become more critical in underwater environments, where divers and underwater machines face severe challenges such as limited dexterity, device damage, and restricted power availability. Here, we develop a self-healing magnetoelectric sensory system (SMES) that uniquely integrates self-powered tactile and proximity sensing with damage detection and autonomous recovery for amphibious operation. The SMES features a multilayer architectu

Water-Sintered Transient Nanocomposites Used as Electrical Interconnects for Dissolvable Consumer Electronics.

Rapid development of electronic technology shortens the development time for new products and accelerates the obsolescence of consumer electronics, resulting in the explosive growth of electronic waste that is difficult to recycle and hazardous to the environment and human health. Transient electronics that can dissolve in water may potentially be adopted to tackle the issues of electronic waste; however, promising approaches to yield large-scale and high-performance transient consumer electronics have not yet been developed. Here, the joint effect of galvanic corrosion and redeposition has be

Bis-Rhodamine B System as a Tin Detector or Molecular Electronics Device.

In this report, fluorescent systems consisting of two Rhodamine B moieties were designed and synthesized employing the solid-phase synthetic approach. The compounds were tested for their chemosensing behavior upon the addition of various metal ions over UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectra. Two probes, 1 and 3, exhibited the best affinity to Sn(IV) ions, resulting in strong fluorescence as well as absorbance enhancement with the low detection limits (2.78 and 2.56 μM, respectively). Compound 3 having two excitations as well as emission maxima was used for the construction of the light di

3D Dielectric Layer Enabled Highly Sensitive Capacitive Pressure Sensors for Wearable Electronics.

Flexible capacitance sensors play a key role in wearable devices, soft robots, and the Internet of things (IoT). To realize these feasible applications, subtle pressure detection under various conditions is required, and it is often limited by low sensitivity. Herein, we demonstrate a capacitive touch sensor with excellent sensing capabilities enabled by a three-dimensional (3D) network dielectric layer, combining a natural viscoelastic property material of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) nanofibers wrapped with electrically conductive materials of Ag nanowires (AgNWs). Convergence of Soft Electronics and Artificial Intelligence: From Materials to Intelligent Systems.

Soft electronics are an emerging class of mechanically compliant platforms that enable conformal, skin-interfaced sensing and actuation on curvilinear and dynamic surfaces. These systems combine deformation-tolerant electrical functionality with soft contact mechanics, but their in-use performance is strongly influenced by time-varying interfaces, motion-induced artifacts, and the system burden associated with dense multimodal integration. Advances in soft electronics are now converging with artificial intelligence, which supports reliable information extraction from high-dimensional signals a

Soft, skin-interfaced electronics enable cannula-free wireless monitoring of sleep respiration.

Sleep-related breathing disorders are prevalent yet frequently underdiagnosed, in part due to limitations of conventional respiratory monitoring technologies. Standard nasal cannulas introduce airflow resistance, discomfort, and poor long-term adherence, constraining at-home and longitudinal assessment. Here, we report a soft, skin-interfaced nasal patch that enables cannula-free, wireless monitoring of respiratory activity during sleep. The device is constructed from ultrathin, elastomeric materials that conform to the nasal surface, coupling respiratory-induced tissue deformation to a strain
