Preliminary experience with a urinary control device in the management of women with genuine stress incontinence.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and acceptability of the FemAssist urinary control device (Insight Medical UK Ltd). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-seven women with cystometrically confirmed genuine stress incontinence performed a perineal 1 h pad-test; the pad test was then repeated with the FemAssist device in place and the difference in pad weights compared with and without the device in place. Patients were given 100 mm visual analogue scales (VAS) to measure discomfort, acceptability and embarrassment associated with using the device. RESULTS: The median (range) loss with and without t

The "Caring Giver": Emotional Caregiving in the Setting of Essential Tremor.

INTRODUCTION: Essential tremor (ET) is a common neurological disorder associated with functional impairment. Emerging evidence shows that some ET caregivers experience burden, but the unique interpersonal aspects of caregiving in the context of ET have not been fully examined. RESEARCH DESIGN: Open-ended questions were administered to 98 ET care-recipient-caregiver dyads. Responses were analyzed using conventional content analysis. RESULTS: The unique visibility of disability and feelings of embarrassment that occur with ET prompts caregivers to be highly attuned to care-recipient emotions.

Hirsutism. A practical approach to improving physical and mental well-being.

The stigma and embarrassment of hirsutism and the lack of public knowledge regarding effective therapy prevent some women from seeking treatment. Heightened physician awareness and a simple, practical approach to the hirsute patient allow adequate assessment and therapeutic recommendations. Decreased hair growth, a return to normal menstrual cycling, and lowered risk of endometrial cancer can be achieved by pharmacologic therapy with few serious side effects. Treatment has a significant effect on both physical and mental well-being and can produce a remarkable change in a patient who has suffe

Combined DMT-harmine formulation reduces negative self-referential emotions during social self-evaluation: a randomized placebo-controlled trial in healthy volunteers.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Negative self-referential emotions such as embarrassment and shame play a key role in the psychopathology of psychiatric disorders but are often insufficiently addressed by standard treatments. Psychedelics such as ayahuasca - an Amazonian plant decoction containing the psychedelic N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and harmala alkaloids, have been proposed to positively modulate self-referential processing. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of an ayahuasca-inspired harmine+DMT formulation and harmine on embarrassment and shame. METHODS: In this randomiz

The surgical approach to gynaecomastia.

The main reason patients seek treatment for gynaecomastia is the marked embarrassment this condition causes. The extra-areolar incisions in the surgical treatment may give obvious and hypertrophic scars as embarrassing as the original benign disease. The recommended semi-circular intra-areolar incision to be used to achieve the aims of treatment in this condition--a normal male contour with an imperceptible scar--is described. Four cases are shown comparing the results of surgical treatment using different incisions.

Dopaminergic state modulates shame and contextual emotional responses in Parkinson's disease.

BackgroundShame is frequent in Parkinson's disease (PD) and negatively affects quality of life, yet its dopaminergic modulation remains unclear.MethodsWe investigated the effect of dopaminergic replacement therapy (DRT) on shame in 41 fluctuating PD patients using an experimental tailored shame induction task. At visit 1, participants were presented with 60 short written scenarios (neutral, non-PD-related shame, PD-related shame). A tailored selection of 12 scenarios (4 per category) was generated in three steps: (1) initial rating of all 60 scenarios on a shame/embarrassment visual analogue s

Psychosocial impact of acne vulgaris: evaluating the evidence.

This paper reviews current evidence presented by recent studies on the impact of acne on psychosocial health. Study methodologies, including case-control and cross-sectional surveys, have demonstrated psychological abnormalities including depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, psychosomatic symptoms, including pain and discomfort, embarrassment and social inhibition. Effective treatment of acne was accompanied by improvement in self-esteem, affect, obsessive-compulsiveness, shame, embarrassment, body image, social assertiveness and self-confidence. Acne is associated with a greater psychologi

Associations between humiliation, shame, self-harm and suicidal behaviours among adolescents and young adults: A systematic review protocol.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people worldwide and remains a major public health concern. Research indicates that negative social contexts involving familial and peer relationships, have far-reaching influences on levels of suicidal behaviours in later life. Previous systematic reviews have focused on evaluating associations between negative life events such as abuse and bullying in childhood and subsequent self-harm or suicidality. However, the association between adolescent experiences of humiliation and shame, and subsequent self-harm or suicidal behav

Do hostile sexual beliefs affect men's perceptions of sexual-interest messages?

This study tested the distorted cognitions component of Hall and Hirschman's (1991) quadripartite model of sexual aggression. Men (N = 107) with and without hostile sexual beliefs viewed erotic slides with a female partner who provided one of four patterns of feedback: clear disinterest, token disinterest, compliant interest, and clear interest. Hostile men reported fewer differences between women, were unresponsive to their partner's perceived embarrassment, and reported a consistent positive mood regardless of her feedback. Conversely, nonhostile men were more responsive to feedback, mirrore

Life with an indwelling urinary catheter: the dialectic of stigma and acceptance.

The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenology was to describe and interpret the lived experience of long-term users of urinary catheters. Living with a urinary catheter involved a dialectical swing between acknowledgment that the catheter was "a part of me" and feelings of alienation and vulnerability when it was experienced as a stigma. Themes include Adjusting to embodied changes by perceiving the catheter as a "part of me," Shame and responding to shame by normalizing, and Embarrassment and coping with embarrassment by humor. Providers can minimize stigma related to the visibility of the ca

Women's barriers for contacting general practice when experiencing gynecological cancer symptoms: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: A prerequisite for general practitioners (GPs) being able to refer patients with gynecological cancer alarm symptoms for further investigations is that individuals present the symptoms to the GP. Not all symptoms are presented to the GP, and knowledge of barriers for healthcare-seeking is sparse. The aim of this study was to analyze associations between age, socioeconomic status, and common barriers ("being too embarrassed", "being too busy", "worried about wasting the doctors time" and "worried what the GP might find") towards GP contact with gynecological alarm symptoms. METHODS

Emotion brokering in Latinx college students: Associations with depressive symptoms and acculturative stress.

Research on cultural brokering (i.e., interpreting cultural norms for others) indicates that some brokering practices (i.e., interpreting language) predict negative psychological adjustment. Recent research indicates that individuals also interpret emotions for others (i.e., emotion brokering). However, the associations between emotion brokering and psychological adjustment have yet to be reported. This investigation is the first to examine the associations between emotion brokering and psychological adjustment (i.e., depressive symptoms, acculturative stress) among Latinx college students. St
