Association between Ambient Air Pollution and Emergency Room Visits for Respiratory Diseases in Spring Dust Storm Season in Lanzhou, China.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution has become a major global public health problem. A number of studies have confirmed the association between air pollutants and emergency room (ER) visits for respiratory diseases in developed countries and some Asian countries, but little evidence has been seen in Western China. This study aims to concentrate on this region. METHODS: A time-series analysis was used to examine the specific effects of major air pollutants (PM10, SO₂ and NO₂) on ER visits for respiratory diseases from 2007 to 2011 in the severely polluted city of Lanzhou. We examined the effects of air

Diversity of the elevation of serum cardiac troponin I levels in patients during their first visit to the emergency room.

BACKGROUND: Although measurement of serum creatine kinase levels, as well as myoglobin levels, has been used for screening patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), the specificity of both is low. Measurement of cardiac troponin levels is now extensively used for the diagnosis of ACS because of their superior cardiac specificity. However, troponin levels are reportedly elevated not only in patients with ACS but also in those with other diseases. METHODS AND RESULTS: The clinical characteristics of 1,023 patients (mean age: 63.5+/-16.3 years; males: 665, females: 358) whose serum cardiac tr

Increased Patient Activation Is Associated with Fewer Emergency Room Visits and Hospitalizations for Pain in Adults with Sickle Cell Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Recurrent vaso-occlusive pain episodes, the most common complication of sickle cell disease (SCD), cause frequent health care utilization. Studies exploring associations between patient activation and acute health care utilization for pain are lacking. We tested the hypothesis that increased activation and self-efficacy are associated with decreased health care utilization for pain in SCD. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study of adults with SCD at a tertiary medical center, we collected demographics, SCD phenotype, Patient Activation Measure levels, and self-efficacy scores using

Fine Particulate Air Pollution and Hospital Emergency Room Visits for Respiratory Disease in Urban Areas in Beijing, China, in 2013.

BACKGROUND: Heavy fine particulate matter (PM2.5) air pollution occurs frequently in China. However, epidemiological research on the association between short-term exposure to PM2.5 pollution and respiratory disease morbidity is still limited. This study aimed to explore the association between PM2.5 pollution and hospital emergency room visits (ERV) for total and cause-specific respiratory diseases in urban areas in Beijing. METHODS: Daily counts of respiratory ERV from Jan 1 to Dec 31, 2013, were obtained from ten general hospitals located in urban areas in Beijing. Concurrently, data on PM

When is it best to remove a catheter: risk factors for catheter-related emergency room visits and failure of ex-catheterisation.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the nature and timing of catheter-related complications, identify factors influencing trial without catheter (TWOC) outcomes and determine a preferred interval to TWOC. METHODS: Data from 672 patients referred for TWOC over 16 months included patient demographics, indication for catheterisation, urological history, interval to TWOC and TWOC outcome. Complication-free survival was assessed using Kaplan-Meier methods, predictors of complications by Cox regression, and factors associated with TWOC outcome by univariable and multivariable logistic regression. Long-term exposure to air pollution and greenness in association with respiratory emergency room visits and hospitalizations: The Life-GAP project.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution has been linked to respiratory diseases, while the effects of greenness remain inconclusive. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the associations between exposure to particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), black carbon (BC), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and greenness (normalized difference vegetation index, NDVI) with respiratory emergency room visits and hospitalizations across seven Northern European centers in the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS) study. METHODS: We used modified mixed-effects Poisson regression to analyze associations of exposure i

Short-term effects of fine particulate air pollution on emergency room visits for cardiac arrhythmias: a case-crossover study in Taipei.

This study was undertaken to determine whether there was an association between fine particles (PM₂.₅) levels and number of emergency room (ER) visits for cardiac arrhythmias in Taipei, Taiwan. ER visits for cardiac arrhythmias and ambient air pollution data for Taipei were obtained for the period 2006-2010. The relative risk (RR) of ER visits was estimated using a case-crossover approach, controlling for weather variables, day of the week, seasonality, and long-term time trends. For the single-pollutant model (without adjustment for other pollutants), increased numbers of ER cardiac arrhythmi

Summer temperature and emergency room visits due to urinary tract infection in South Korea: a national time-stratified case-crossover study.

BACKGROUND: Although urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common and severe public health concern, and there are clear biological mechanisms between UTI and hot temperatures, few studies have addressed the association between hot temperatures and UTI. METHODS: We designed a time-stratified case-crossover study using a population-representative sample cohort based on the National Health Insurance System (NHIS) in South Korea. We obtained all NHIS-based hospital admissions through the emergency room (ER) due to UTI (using a primary diagnostic code) from 2006 to 2019. We assigned satellite-based r

Different volatile organic compounds in local point source air pollution pose distinctive elevated risks for respiratory disease-associated emergency room visits.

Air pollution increases risk of respiratory disease but prior research has focused on particulate matter and criteria air pollutants, and there are few studies on respiratory effects of volatile organic compounds (VOC). We examined zip code level relationships between emergency room (ER) visits for respiratory illness and VOC pollution in New York State from 2010 to 2018. Detailed information on VOC pollution was derived from the National Emissions Inventory, which provides point source information on VOC emissions at the zip code level. We considered four respiratory diseases: asthma, acute u

Short-term effects of fine particulate air pollution on cardiovascular hospital emergency room visits: a time-series study in Beijing, China.

BACKGROUND: The link between particulate matter (PM) and cardiovascular morbidity has been investigated in numerous studies. Less evidence exists, however, about how age, gender and season may modify this relationship. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between ambient PM2.5 (PM ≤ 2.5 µm) and daily hospital emergency room visits (ERV) for cardiovascular diseases in Beijing, China. Moreover, potential effect modification by age, gender, season, air mass origin and the specific period with 2008 Beijing Olympic were investigated. Finally, the temporal lag structure of PM2.5 has

Short-term effects of ambient air pollution on daily emergency room visits for abdominal pain: a time-series study in Wuhan, China.

Short-term exposure to ambient air pollution has been proven to result in respiratory, cardiovascular, and digestive diseases, leading to increased emergency room visits (ERVs). Abdominal pain complaints provide a large proportion of the ERVs, as yet few studies have focused on the correlations between ambient air pollution and abdominal pain, especially in emergency departments within China. Daily data for daily ERVs were collected in Wuhan, China (from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2018), including air pollution concentration (SO2, NO2, PM2.5, PM10, CO, and O3), and meteorological variable
