Chagas Disease Surveillance Activities - Seven States, 2017.

Chagas disease, a potentially life-threatening disease caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, has become a concern in the United States as a result of human emigration from Latin America where Chagas disease is endemic (1). It is estimated that as many as 8 million people living in Mexico, and Central and South America have Chagas disease.* Most cases of Chagas disease in the United States are chronic infections; however, rare cases of acute congenital infections and autochthonous vectorborne transmission have been reported (2). To understand how data are collected and used, a rev

Factors influencing jaundice in immigrant Greek infants.

A study of 887 consecutively born immigrant Greek and 220 Anglo-Saxon Australian infants has shown that serum bilirubin concentrations are influenced by these factors: breast feeding, delivery with forceps, gestation, birthweight, sex of the infant, presence of hypoxia, presence of blood group incompatibility, a positive direct Coombs's test, maternal sepis, and administration to the mother of promethazine hydrochloride, reserpine, chloral hydrate, barbiturates, narcotic agents, diazepam, oxytocin, aspirin, and phenytoin sodium. Apart from the administration of promethazine hydrochloride, rese

Increasing Assimilation Associated With Slower Reductions in Alcohol Use Among Latina Young Adults Soon After Immigration.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated how rates of change in acculturation processes correlated with changes in alcohol use frequency and quantity among young adult Latina women after they immigrated to the United States. METHOD: Using univariate and parallel process latent growth modeling, we examined 3-year trajectories of alcohol frequency and quantity and two types of acculturation processes among 530 foreign-born, young adult Latina women (ages 18-23) during their initial years in the United States. The acculturation processes were enculturation (the retention or adoption of Latinx cultural beliefs

Contextual influences on Latino men's sexual and substance use behaviors following immigration to the Midwestern United States.

Objectives: Latinos in the United States experience a disproportionate number of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and higher use of alcohol and illegal drugs, which has been attributed to increases in risk behaviors following immigration. Whereas substantial research documents these behavioral changes, little is known about how immigrants increase their risk or why some immigrants increase their risk and other immigrants do not. This study explored how the social and normative context affects sexual and substance use behaviors among Latino immigrant men in a midsized Midwes

[Homelessness and mental health diagnose during the Great Recession (2008-2017): the effect of immigration.].

OBJECTIVE: Homelessness, which is a severe social problem across Europe and on the rise over the past decade, is closely linked to organic and mental health problems. In front of the lack of diagnostic analysis studies in the Spanish territory, this research aimed to determine the sociodemographic characteristics of a sample of individuals experiencing homelessness (IEH), to determine the prevalence of diagnoses of substance use disorders, dual pathology and other mental disorders and to analyze the existence of diagnostic differences between IEH born in the country and immigrant IEH. Body Image, Assimilation, and Weight of Immigrant Adolescents in the United States: A Person-Centered Analysis.

Adolescence is a critical developmental period as youth explore their body image and work to establish an identity. The stress of identity and body image development can be exacerbated by acculturative stress faced by immigrant adolescents. Using a person-centered analysis, we investigated immigrant adolescents' (n = 57) profiles based on assimilation to the United States (US), weight, and body image dissatisfaction. Analyses included an exploratory two-step clustering technique using maximum likelihood estimation procedures to assign class membership. Follow-up analyses then examined latent c

Systematic review of risk factors for nonadherence to TB treatment in immigrant populations.

BACKGROUND: Foreign-born populations carry a significant TB burden in low-prevalence countries, composing over half of all cases in parts of Europe and North America. This study systematically reviewed evidence of risk factors for nonadherence to TB drug therapy in this group. METHODS: On 28 October 2013 MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, PsychINFO and ProQuest were systematically searched for studies examining adherence in foreign-born populations with TB. Grey literature and reference lists were hand-searched. Risk factor studies were selected for inclusion if they consisted of at least 95% foreign-b

The Challenges of Tuberculosis Management beyond Professional Competence: Insights from Tuberculosis Outbreaks among Ethiopian Immigrants in Israel.

Controlling tuberculosis (TB) among immigrants from high-incidence countries presents a public health concern as well as a medical challenge. In this article, we investigate a TB outbreak in a community of people of Jewish descent who emigrated from Ethiopia to Israel (Israeli Ethiopians) that started in June 2022. The index case was a 20-year-old female who had recently immigrated to Israel with her family. Her pre-immigration tuberculin skin test was positive. After excluding active TB, treatment with daily isoniazid for latent TB (LTB) was started shortly after her arrival. A year later, sh

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Mental Health of Immigrant Parents.

Recent studies have shown that immigrant parents are at risk for various mental health issues, but there is a lack of meta-analyses on their prevalence. This systematic review aims to determine the prevalence of mental health problems (e.g., stress, anxiety, depression, and psychiatric disorders) in immigrant parents and identify contributing factors. We systematically searched multiple databases up to July 2023 and evaluated the quality of studies using AHRQ criteria. Pooled prevalence and 95% CI were used to assess mental health issues among immigrant parents, with subgroup analysis performe

Local cross-border disease surveillance and control: experiences from the Mekong Basin.

BACKGROUND: The Mekong Basin Disease Surveillance cooperation (MBDS) is one of several sub-regional disease surveillance networks that have emerged in recent years as an approach to transnational cooperation for infectious disease prevention and control. Since 2003 MBDS has pioneered a unique model for local cross-border cooperation. This study examines stakeholders' perspectives of these MBDS experiences, based on a survey of local managers and semi-structured interviews with MBDS leaders and the central coordinator. RESULTS: Fifteen managers from 12 of 20 paired cross-border sites completed

[The pediatrician and the child in a multiethnic society].

The increasing immigration from developing countries has determined new health problems. Italian Pediatricians must become acquainted with these health concerns such as the excessive use of public pediatric structures, especially hospitals, specific diseases unusual among Italian children (malaria, tuberculosis, tropical parassitosis, sickle cell anemia, rickets and others), control of previous immunizations and repetition when one is not sure of their efficacy. Moreover, immigrated children seem to be more susceptible to common pediatric diseases (mostly infections) than Italian children. Fin

[Extrapulmonary tuberculosis in Denmark. A review of the incidence, localization and therapy].

In Denmark, just under 20% of tuberculosis (TB) cases amongst Danes and 25-30% of cases amongst people of foreign nationalities are made up of isolated extrapulmonary (EP) TB. The incidence among Danes is falling, whereas an increasing amount of EP TB cases are found among foreigners due to continued immigration, and these now constitute 50% of all cases of EP TB. EP TB is found among older Danes and younger foreigners. The HIV/AIDS epidemic has not had any effect on the incidence of TB and EP TB in Denmark. EP TB is most frequently found in lymph nodes and the urogenital system. Since the dis
