Effect of a lipid-rich emollient containing ceramide 3 in experimentally induced skin barrier dysfunction.

In the present study we compared the effect of a ceramide 3-containing emollient (Locobase(R) Repair) with a control emollient (vaselinum album/cremor lanette ana) and untreated damaged skin using clinical, bioengineering and immunohistochemical methods in two different models of experimentally induced skin barrier dysfunction. In model A (n = 13) skin barrier dysfunction was inflicted at three investigation sites by tape stripping. In model B (n = 13) the volunteers were patch tested at three investigation sites with sodium dodecyl sulphate (0.2%) for 4 h a day for 4 consecutive days. The inv

Cutting oil dermatitis on guinea pig skin. (II). Emollient creams and cutting oil dermatitis.

The effect of repeated exposure of cutting oil on 8 guinea pigs' skin was evaluated by visual scoring for erythema and skin water vapour loss (SVL) measurement over a 6-week period. The visual scores (measuring severity of erythema) and SVL values were significantly higher on skin treated with cutting oils (positive control) compared to untreated skin (negative control) throughout the study period. The scores and SVL values returned to near-baseline values when cutting oil application was stopped. In addition, the effect of 2 "after-work" emollient creams on 8 guinea pigs' skin repeatedly trea

Different types of emollient cream exhibit diverse physiological effects on the skin barrier in adults with atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Eczema (atopic dermatitis; AD) is a very common itchy skin condition affecting 1 in 5 children and up to 1 in 10 adults worldwide. The skin of eczema sufferers is prone to redness, irritation and dryness because it does not form an effective barrier, i.e. the ability of the skin to stop irritants, allergens and microorganisms getting into the body. Skin barrier dysfunction is a hallmark of AD. The regular and liberal (600 g/week for an adult) use of emollients is recommended for all patients with eczema), even between episodes of itching and redness, to soften and soothe the skin.

Reducing hospital-acquired pressure ulcers with a silicone-based dermal nourishing emollient-associated skincare regimen.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of a silicone-based dermal nourishing emollient (SBDNE) regimen on the reduction of pressure ulcers (PrUs) and costs in a hospital medical unit. RATIONALE: PrUs represent a serious problem for patients within the acute care setting and are a significant care management challenge for clinicians. Effective October 1, 2008, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will no longer reimburse hospitals at the higher diagnosis-related group rate for Stages III and IV PrUs that are not documented on admission. In addition, formation of PrUs in the hospital also

Effects of an emollient application on newborn skin from birth for prevention of atopic dermatitis: a randomized controlled study in Thai neonates.

BACKGROUND: Enhancing the skin barrier in high-risk neonates by daily use of emollients during infancy might prevent atopic dermatitis (AD); however, there have been no studies on this topic in a country with a tropical climate. Climate may affect the results of the use of emollients in neonates for AD prevention and possible adverse cutaneous eruptions. OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that emollients used during infancy can prevent AD in high-risk neonates in a country with a tropical climate and to evaluate other possible adverse cutaneous eruptions in this population. METHODS: This was

Intradermal Immunoglobulin E (IgE) Injection in a Specific Interval With Emollient in the Control of Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria and Allergic Rhinitis.

Background and objective: Urticaria is distinguished by the activation of mast cells and basophils via degranulation, predominantly induced by the cross-linkage of allergens with specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies. Several hypotheses propose that intradermal injections of IgE stimulate the production of antibodies that are specifically targeted towards the histamine/immunoglobulin complex. Subsequently, these antibodies exhibit binding affinity towards and exert inhibitory effects on the generation of histamine during the occurrence of allergic responses. The administration of many his

Efficacy of benzoyl peroxide (5.3%) emollient foam and benzoyl peroxide (8%) wash in reducing Propionibacterium acnes on the back.

BACKGROUND: Topical treatment of acne vulgaris on the back is challenging largely due to the extensive broad surface with difficult to reach areas. A "leave-on" foam is suited for application to the trunk due to ease of application and spreadability. Prior to this trial, no data on Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) reduction on the back has existed for any benzoyl peroxide (BP) formulations or other acne treatments. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of BP (5.3%) emollient foam and BP (8%) wash in reducing P. acnes levels on the back. METHODS: Five-week open-label single-center study

The effect of daily treatment with an olive oil/lanolin emollient on skin integrity in preterm infants: a randomized controlled trial.

To date, appropriate skin therapy for premature infants has not been clearly defined. Emollient creams are often used without solid evidence for a benefit to the neonate. The aim of the current study was to investigate the cutaneous effects of two different topical ointment therapies. Between October 2004 and November 2006 we prospectively enrolled 173 infants between 25 and 36 weeks of gestation admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit. Infants were randomly assigned to daily topical treatment with water-in-oil emollient cream (Bepanthen), olive oil cream (70% lanolin, 30% olive oil), or to

Managing dry skin in patients with comorbidities or with advanced age: unmet needs and roles for products containing potential emollient-plus ingredients.

In dry skin (DS), skin-barrier function is easily disturbed and moisturizing factors in the stratum corneum are reduced. Despite being a common condition, DS is often overlooked in patients with advanced age or comorbid diseases. In September 2022, specialists in dermatology and skin care met to discuss unmet needs and management of patients with DS with existing medical conditions or DS induced by ongoing pharmacological treatments. There was consensus about the need to improve the current understanding and management of DS in patients with comorbidities, including type 2 diabetes, chronic ki

[Influence of an adjuvant treatment with an emollient containing 10 % urea, ceramides, glycerin und glyceryl glucoside in patients with psoriasis vulgaris].

BACKGROUND: Guidelines generally recommend an adjuvant treatment with emollients for patients suffering from psoriasis. However evidence for this purpose is limited. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a prospective observational study with an emollient containing 10% urea, ceramides, glycerin and glyceryl glucoside in patients suffering from mild to moderate psoriasis. The patients had to be stable for at least 12 weeks on prior antipsoriatic therapy including topical therapy, systemic treatment or phototherapy which was continued during the trial.
