Verbal emotional expressiveness in women with eating disorders: recalling autobiographical memories.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to study autobiographical memories in women with eating disorders regarding emotional verbal expression, according to age. Our hypotheses are threefold: due to the emotional avoidance that occurs in women with eating disorders, in the younger ages, it was hypothesized that younger participants with anorexia and bulimia nervosa will present a lower number of emotional expressions in the descriptions of their memories than women without eating disorders; that older participants with anorexia and bulimia nervosa will present a greater number of negative verbal expression

Perceived maternal care is associated with emotional eating in young adults.

INTRODUCTION: Early life adversity, including the perception of poor quality of maternal care, is associated with long-term metabolic and psychosocial consequences. The negative quality of mother/child relationship is associated with emotional overeating in young children, which is defined by eating in response to emotional arousal states such as fear, anger or anxiety. However, it is not known if this association persists through adolescence. Therefore, we aimed at verifying if maternal care during infancy can influence emotional eating in young adults. METHODS: Seventy-five adolescents, res

Emotional differentiation and parental bonding in inpatients suffering from eating disorders.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed (1) to determine whether inpatients with eating disorders (EDs) have difficulty differentiating their emotions and being aware of the emotions of others; (2) to investigate the link between actual skills in emotional awareness and the sense of self-efficacy concerning these skills; and (3) to assess the impact of the quality of parental bonding on patients' levels of emotional awareness. METHODS: A sample of 44 inpatients with EDs, including a subgroup of 25 patients with restricting type anorexia nervosa (AR) and a subgroup of 19 patients with purging symptoms (P

The roles of negative emotion intensity, negative emotion differentiation, and self-compassion in loss of control eating.

OBJECTIVE: Negative affect intensity is robustly related to binge eating, but the relationship between negative emotion differentiation (i.e., the ability to differentiate negatively-valenced emotions) and binge eating is unclear. Further, little is known about factors that might reduce emotion intensity and/or enhance emotion differentiation, thereby reducing binge eating. Self-compassion is consistently linked to less binge eating, which may be due to decreased negative affect and/or an enhanced ability to differentiate emotions. The current study examined the roles of negative emotion inten

Attachment style and emotional eating in bariatric surgery candidates: The mediating role of difficulties in emotion regulation.

OBJECTIVE: Difficulties with emotion regulation is a hypothesized mechanism through which attachment insecurity may affect emotional eating. No studies have yet investigated this effect in the bariatric population. Because many obese individuals engage in emotional eating, difficulty regulating emotion may be an important underlying mechanism through which attachment insecurity is linked to emotional eating in bariatric surgery candidates. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 1393 adult bariatric surgery candidates from the Toronto Western Hospital were recruited to complete the Emotional

The mediating role of emotion dysregulation and depression on the relationship between childhood trauma exposure and emotional eating.

Exposure to childhood adversity is implicated in the etiology of adverse health outcomes, including depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and obesity. The relationship between childhood trauma and obesity may be related to the association of childhood trauma and risk for emotional eating. One pathway between trauma exposure, psychopathology, and emotional eating may be through emotion dysregulation and depression. The current study was undertaken to characterize demographic, environmental, and psychological risk factors for emotional eating in a primarily African American, low soci

Perception of threat from emotions and its role in poor emotional expression within eating pathology.

Recent research has documented links between eating disorder (ED) symptomatology and emotional expression deficits. Relevant theoretical models have alluded to the functional role of disordered eating in alleviating affect that is felt to be otherwise unmanageable and threatening. Nevertheless, research examining ED individuals' perceptions of emotional states has been sparse, while empirical studies have predominantly focused on global conceptualizations of emotion, failing to address discrete affect states. The current study had three aims: (a) to determine the relation between ED symptomato

Prospective associations of negative mood and emotion regulation in the occurrence of binge eating in binge eating disorder.

Retrospective and experimental data demonstrate the importance of emotion regulation (ER) in the maintenance of binge episodes in binge eating disorder (BED). The current study tested whether mood and ER prospectively influence binge episodes in individuals with BED via ecological momentary assessment (EMA). Individuals with BED (n = 79) completed two weeks of EMA. Each sampling point consisted of a series of questions pertaining to participants' mood, ER, and eating behaviour. Successful application of adaptive ER strategies predicted subsequent abstinence, while rumination predicted subseque

Emotional eating in healthy individuals and patients with an eating disorder: evidence from psychometric, experimental and naturalistic studies.

Emotional eating has traditionally been defined as (over)eating in response to negative emotions. Such overeating can impact general health because of excess energy intake and mental health, due to the risks of developing binge eating. Yet, there is still significant controversy on the validity of the emotional eating concept and several theories compete in explaining its mechanisms. The present paper examines the emotional eating construct by reviewing and integrating recent evidence from psychometric, experimental and naturalistic research. Several psychometric questionnaires are available a

Short term effects of semaglutide on emotional eating and other abnormal eating patterns among subjects living with obesity.

OBJECTIVE: Emotional eating (EE) and other abnormal eating patterns are highly prevalent among people living with obesity (PWO). In this sense, semaglutide, by acting on areas of the brain involved in the reward system and emotion regulation, could have the potential to ameliorate these eating patterns. METHOD: 69 PWO attending an obesity clinic were evaluated baseline and after 3 months since the beginning of semaglutide. To rule out abnormal EE, the Emotional Eating Questionnaire was administered, and a structured interview was conducted. RESULTS: 69 PWO (82.6%♀, 43.7 ± 1years, and 34.3 ±

The Influence of Parental Control on Emotional Eating Among College Students: The Mediating Role of Emotional Experience and Regulation.

Background: Excessive parental control has been found to be associated with an increasing risk of emotional eating in children, yet the potential moderating role of emotion regulation abilities remains unclear. This study investigated the relationships between different types of parental control and emotional eating, as well as the mediating effects of specific emotion regulation strategies and negative emotions. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 1167 Chinese college students (62.5% females, age: 20.23 ± 1.50 years) recruited via social media. Participants completed t

[Overweight and obesity related to emotional disturbances and eating disorders in schoolchildren].

Childhood overweight and obesity are one of the most important public health problems of the 21st century worldwide, and Mexico ranks among the top positions. This problem is linked to a decrease in quality of life and life expectancy due to the consequences that range from mild to severe, affecting the physical and emotional integrity of those who suffer from it, since it has been reported in several studies that the presence of overweight and obesity is a risk factor for presenting emotional distress. The objective was to synthesize the scientific literature on the relationship between overw

Eating disorder symptoms and profiles of emotion regulation strategy use.

BACKGROUND: Emotion regulation difficulties are widely thought to be a transdiagnostic risk factor for eating disorders. However, there is limited data on the precise patterns of emotion regulation strategy use that characterize eating-disorder symptoms. Our aim was to comprehensively examine the relationship between emotion-regulation strategy use and eating-disorder symptoms, identifying profiles of strategy use that might characterize these symptoms. METHOD: University students and general community members (N = 665, Mage = 23.72, 77.3 % female) completed psychometric measures assessing th

[Validation of the Emotional Eating Questionnaire in Mexican adults with overweight and obesity].

Introduction: negative emotions and persistent stress can lead to abnormal compensatory behaviors, known as emotional eating (EE). However, there is a gap in research aimed at validating EE questionnaires for specific populations. Objective: to validate the Emotional Eating Questionnaire (EEQ) in overweight and obese Mexican adults. Methods: this is a clinimetric study. Participants included sedentary individuals aged 18 to 60 years with overweight or obesity. The study comprised three phases: a Delphi panel to validate content, administration of the EEQ to a sample of at least 300 participant

Childhood maltreatment and disordered eating: The mediating role of emotion regulation.

Childhood maltreatment is pervasive and can result in life-long adverse physical and mental health challenges, including a heightened risk for disordered eating. Current treatments for disordered eating have limited long-term success, partly because the psychological processes involved are not well understood. The current research examined two different components of emotion regulation (expressive suppression and cognitive reappraisal) and three components of cognitive emotion regulation (intrusive thoughts, thought suppression attempts, and successful thought suppression) as potential psychol

Depression, Anxiety, and Severity of Obesity in Adolescents: Is Emotional Eating the Link?

The purposes of this study were to characterize the impact of depression and anxiety on the severity of obesity among youth seeking weight management treatment and to determine the extent to which emotional eating mediates the relationship between depression and/or anxiety and degree of obesity. This cross-sectional, retrospective chart review of 102 adolescent patients from a weight management clinic analyzed demographics, body mass index, depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9), and anxiety (Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-7) screens and the Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire, Emotio

A three-phase model of the social emotional functioning in eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Problems with social emotional functioning are an important part of eating disorder psychopathology. AIM: This study aimed to propose a model of social emotional functioning before and during the illness and to explain the consequences for those involved. METHOD: We propose a three-phase model of social and emotional processes as both causal and maintaining factors in anorexia nervosa. The predictions from this model are examined, and we consider the relevance for treatment. RESULTS: The evidence base for the theoretical model is presented: Phase 1 describes causal predispositio

Emotional perception in patients with eating disorders in comparison with depressed patients.

OBJECTIVE: Emotion regulation is a key issue for many psychiatric and psychosomatic disorders, including eating disorders. Eating disordered patients (EDP) show high levels of depressive comorbidity, and there is much uncertainty about disorder-specific deficits. This study is aimed at delineating disorder-specific disturbances of emotional perception in EDP. METHOD: Fifty-two EDP were compared with 35 depressed patients (DP) and 25 healthy controls. They rated their emotional experience when viewing visual emotional stimuli. Emphasis was placed on the patients' perception of their own emotio
