A Bayesian belief network for quality assessment: application to employment officer support.

BACKGROUND: 'Supported' employment stipulates that disabled people should have real jobs for real pay. This paper models kinds of supported employment, assesses how the support and placement features affect its outcomes and its quality from the perspective of the employees, and provides a dynamic model to help explore what types of interventions might promote greater social inclusion for people with learning and other disabilities. METHOD: Bayesian belief networks (BBNs) provide the general framework for modelling the relationships between the variables and features of interest. The structure

Supported Employment, Participation at Work, and Peer Support: A Qualitative, Participatory Case Study Report of the Geesthacht Model.

Background: For people who have experienced mental health crises or psychosocial disabilities, it is considerably more difficult to receive support to participate in work on an equal basis with others. In the town of Geesthacht, in Northern Germany, an integrative care network was implemented that allows for acute psychiatric treatment as well as participation in work and activities. This paper aims to explore the principles, advantages, and challenges of this innovative project. Methodology: Within the context of a participatory and collaborative process evaluation of a prospective controlled

Adapted Individual Placement and Support (IPS) supported employment outcomes among high school students with serious mental health conditions.

OBJECTIVE: Transition-age youth (TAY; ages 16-25 years) with serious mental health diagnoses have low rates of employment and postsecondary education participation. Individual Placement and Support (IPS) is an evidence-based practice designed for adults with mental health conditions to gain employment. IPS has been adapted for TAY by adding supported education, but research is limited with high school students. METHODS: IPS adapted for TAY with supported education services (IPS-SEd) was piloted at a mid-Atlantic Community Mental Health provider. TAY were recruited for an 18-month study (inter

Good psychiatric management for borderline personality disorder: A qualitative study of its implementation in a supported employment team.

INTRODUCTION: People with borderline personality disorder have difficulties with work. The Individual Placement and Support model has shown its worldwide effectiveness in terms of vocational rehabilitation for individuals with psychiatric disorders. However, only a few recent studies have explored its results for people with personality disorders, and the findings were mitigated. Additionally, Individual Placement and Support job coaches reported difficulties in supporting this population. An evidence-based psychotherapeutic method, also applicable in a case management context, called Good Psy

Job Retention and Reintegration in People with Mental Health Problems: A Descriptive Evaluation of Supported Employment Routine Programs.

PURPOSE: Striking evidence supports the effectiveness of supported employment (SE) in achieving competitive employment in individuals with mental health problems. Yet, little is known whether SE is effective to maintain employment in individuals at risk of job loss. We aimed to descriptively compare SE for employed clients (SE-retention) and unemployed clients (SE-integration) regarding competitive employment. METHODS: We used administrative data from January 2017 to October 2021 provided by a vocational rehabilitation center in Switzerland including all individuals (≥ 18yrs.) with mental hea

Improving Work Outcome in Supported Employment for Serious Mental Illness: Results From 2 Independent Studies of Errorless Learning.

BACKGROUND: Heterogeneity in work outcomes is common among individuals with serious mental illness (SMI). OBJECTIVE: In 2 studies, we sought to examine the efficacy of adding errorless learning, a behavioral training intervention, to evidence-based supported employment to improve SMI work outcomes. Work behavior problems were targeted for intervention. We also explored associations between early work behavior and job tenure. METHODS: For both studies (VA: n = 71; community mental health center: n = 91), randomization occurred at the time of job obtainment with participants randomized (1:1) t

Exploring Intersections of Race and Disability in the Context of Canadian Employment Support Systems Through the Experiences of Job Seekers/Workers, Employers, and Service Providers.

PURPOSE: Racism and ableism have impacts at individual and organizational levels and can produce and reproduce inequities and injustices in diverse contexts. However, their intersection remains largely unexamined in the provision of employment supports. The objective of this qualitative study is to identify barriers and facilitators within employment supports to seek strategies to improve the employment outcomes of racialized disabled job seekers and workers and address gaps faced by service providers and employers. METHODS: This study used interpretive description (Thorne S. Interpretive des

Workplace Wellbeing in Ontario's Public Sector: Employee and Employer Perspectives on Workplace Supports.

BACKGROUND: Workplace wellbeing has become a key focus of occupational and public health, with increasing attention to mental health, psychosocial risks, fatigue, and work-life balance. However, limited evidence compares employee and employer perspectives, distinguishes support availability from support use, or examines whether wellbeing is more closely associated with isolated interventions or the broader support environment. METHOD: Cross-sectional survey data were collected from public-sector employees (N = 1307) and employers (N = 321) in Ontario, Canada. Analyses compared employee and em

Individual placement and support and employment in personality disorders: a registry based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: To explore the relative impact of Individual Placement and Support (IPS) in patients with personality disorders (PDs) as compared to patients with other mental disorders. METHODS: Data from the Dutch Employee Insurance Agency of participants enrolled in a national IPS trajectory between 2008 and 2018 were linked to corresponding data on employment outcomes, diagnostic and sociodemographic information from Statistics Netherlands. This resulted in a sample of 335 participants with PDs who could be compared with 1073 participants with other mental disorders. RESULTS: Participants wi

Consumer, health professional and employment specialist experiences of an individual placement and support programme.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with severe mental illness (SMI) are under-represented in the workforce. The Individual Placement and Support (IPS) programme is an evidence-based intervention that co-locates an Employment Specialist in a community mental health team to support individuals with a SMI with their goal of finding work. Previous research predominantly explored IPS programme outcomes rather than stakeholder experiences. AIM: To explore programme stakeholder perspectives and experiences during the early stages of IPS programme implementation. METHODS: Qualitative descriptive methodology ex

Alcohol in the Workplace: A Qualitative Study of Employees' Experiences With Employer-Supported Alcohol Treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol use disorder is a major public health issue, impacting health, well-being, relationships and work performance. In Sweden, employers are legally required to provide access to and cover the cost of alcohol treatment for individuals with alcohol use disorder. Employer-supported alcohol treatment is therefore rather common in Sweden; however, research on employees' experiences with this type of treatment remains unexplored. This qualitative study investigates how a group of Swedish employees who had received employer-supported alcohol treatment experienced workplace managemen

Care givers in the workplace: employer support for employees with elderly and chronically disabled dependents.

With increasing demands for dependent care, and more women in the work force, employees may be required to balance work and care giving responsibilities. The New York Business Group on Health survey examines the role of business and industry concerning this issue: employer awareness about problems of employees responsible for the care of elderly or chronically disabled dependent family members, and company programs and policies to deal with employee care giver problems. Findings from this exploratory study of 69 companies in the greater New York area indicate that approximately half are aware

A randomized controlled trial of a supported employment program for persons with long-term mental illness in Hong Kong.

OBJECTIVES: Supported employment is an evidence-based practice that has proved to be consistently more effective than conventional vocational rehabilitation in helping people with severe mental illness find and sustain competitive employment. Most research on the effectiveness of supported employment comes from the United States. This study examined the effectiveness and applicability of a supported employment program based on the individual placement and support model in a Hong Kong setting. METHODS: Ninety-two unemployed individuals with long-term mental illness who desired competitive empl

Baseline characteristics of a diagnostically defined early psychosis cohort entering supported employment and education: findings from the SEEearly trial.

UNLABELLED: SEEearly is a multi-site randomized controlled trial (RCT) investigating the efficacy of supported employment and education (SEE) in adolescents and young adults aged 16 to 35 with early psychosis. In this publication we report baseline characteristics of the cohort with an emphasis on educational and vocational status at study entry. Between October 2022 and December 2024, a total of 184 participants with a diagnosis of schizophrenia spectrum disorder were recruited across six sites in Germany. At baseline, 53.3% were not engaged in employment, education, or training (NEET); only

Supported employment and education in comprehensive, integrated care for first episode psychosis: Effects on work, school, and disability income.

BACKGROUND: Participation in work and school are central objectives for first episode psychosis (FEP) programs, but evidence effectiveness has been mixed in studies not focused exclusively on supported employment and education (SEE). Requirements for current motivation to work or go to school limit the generalizability of such studies. METHODS: FEP participants (N=404) at thirty-four community treatment clinics participated in a cluster randomized trial that compared usual Community Care (CC) to NAVIGATE, a comprehensive, team-based treatment program that included ≥5h of SEE services per week

Employment-related Education and Support for Cancer Survivors: a Content Analysis of Employment Resources Offered on National Cancer Institute-Designated Cancer Center Websites.

High rates of employment changes and associated concerns among cancer survivors following diagnosis and treatment suggest a need to examine what employment-related educational resources and support are currently being offered to cancer survivors and what gaps exist in those resources. In 2023, we conducted a content analysis of employment resources described on the websites of the NCI-Designated Cancer Centers that provide clinical care (N = 64) through a systematic review procedure using predetermined search terms and a standardized process to examine the availability and accessibility of suc

Peer Support Systems, Psychosocial Support and Employer Attractiveness Among Healthcare Workers: A Multicenter Cross-Sectional Study in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare professionals are frequently exposed to serious work-related events that may adversely affect their psychological well-being, work ability, and professional retention. Peer support systems have been proposed as a low-threshold organizational approach to providing psychosocial support following such job-inherent events. This study examined the incidence of serious work-related events among healthcare workers, employees' perceptions of an implemented peer support system, and the potential relevance of psychosocial support for employer attractiveness. METHODS: A multicente

An 8 year follow-up of a specialist supported employment service for high-ability adults with autism or Asperger syndrome.

Few supported employment programmes have been specifically designed for people with autism, especially those who are more able. This study examines the outcome of a supported employment service (NAS Prospects) for adults with autism or Asperger syndrome (IQ 60+) over an 8 year period. Approximately 68 percent of clients found employment. Of the 192 jobs, the majority were permanent contracts and most involved administrative, technical or computing work. Assessment of current clients indicates that IQ, language skills and educational attainments are high. However, work has also been found for t
