Empowerment in drug treatment: dilemmas in implementing policy in welfare institutions.

This article analyzes how and why welfare policies focusing on empowerment as users' self-management create dilemmas in medically assisted drug treatment in Denmark. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, the article points to two sets of dilemmas by focusing on the relationship between legal and institutional setups and staff and user possibilities for agency. The first dilemma concerns how to provide user self-management and individualized services and the actual possibilities of effectuating this in welfare institutions imbued by limited resources, manpower, and local rules. The second, how to

The Agency, Resources, and Institutional Structures for Sanitation-related Empowerment (ARISE) Scales: Development and validation of measures of women's empowerment in urban sanitation for low- and middle-income countries.

Sustainable Development Goal 6 aims to ensure access to water and sanitation for all, and target 6.2 emphasizes "paying special attention to the needs of women and girls". Research documenting how water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) conditions impact women's and girls' lives is growing. However, no rigorously validated survey instruments exist for measuring empowerment within the WASH sector. The objective of our study was to develop and validate survey instruments to measure sub-domains of women's empowerment in relation to sanitation in urban areas of low- and middle-income countries. We fo

Empowerment of volunteer nursing service providers during disasters: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Volunteers providing nursing services are among the first individuals to arrive at the scene after an incident; therefore, they must use their skills and capabilities to provide necessary care for the injured to prevent problems from worsening and complications from arising. Consequently, having structured empowerment courses for volunteers before disasters seems essential. This research aimed to determine the dimensions and components of empowering volunteer nursing service providers in disasters. METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted using a conventional qualitative cont

Maternal empowerment, feeding knowledge, and infant nutrition: Evidence from rural China.

BACKGROUND: Maternal empowerment - the capacity to make decisions within households - is linked to better child feeding and nutritional outcomes, but few studies have considered the mediating role of caregiver knowledge. Further, existing literature centres primarily on the husband-wife dyad while overlooking grandmothers as important childcare decision-makers. METHODS: We collected primary data through household surveys in 2019 and 2021 from 1190 households with infants zero to six months living in rural western China. We identified the primary and secondary caregivers for each infant and as

'Must try harder?': a family empowerment intervention for acquired brain injury.

This paper describes an intervention aimed at empowering parents of child survivors of acquired brain injury (ABI) in their interaction with teachers and other professionals involved in their child's education. The particular characteristics of the late morbidity of child ABI led to the design of an intervention in the form of a video and informational booklet that is the property of the family. Early response to the intervention has been extremely positive, although formal evaluation has been unexpectedly challenging.

Empowerment of women with purging-type bulimia nervosa through nutritional rehabilitation.

Since the primary role of psychoeducation in eating disorders is to act as a foundation for other interventions, nutritional rehabilitation should use the same therapeutic principles as psychotherapy. This paper looks at the possibility that traditional psychoeducational results can be enhanced in patients with bulimia nervosa by a new nutritional rehabilitation programme focused on psychobiological reorganization of eating behaviour as opposed to the prescription of regular eating patterns. Forty women with purging-type bulimia nervosa were enrolled for a 24-week experimental period of cognit

Empowerment trajectories in patients with chronic heart failure: a descriptive correlational study.

AIMS: Patient empowerment is a key factor in the management of chronic heart failure (HF), as it enables individuals to better understand and manage their condition, improve outcomes, and reduce the risk of decompensation. This study aims to identify predictors of baseline empowerment and its changes (improvement or deterioration) in patients with HF. Examining empowerment trajectories can help identify patients at risk of deterioration and support the design of tailored interventions. METHODS AND RESULTS: Sociodemographic, clinical, psychosocial, HRQoL, self-care, and empowerment questionnai

Mental health in asylum-seeking parents: Dynamics of fragmentation, resilience, and empowerment.

Asylum-seeking populations face a disproportionate burden of adverse mental health outcomes, yet empirical evidence on the factors that promote resilience and empowerment within these communities remain limited. This exploratory qualitative study examined the lived experiences of asylum-seeking parents through the lens of the family resilience model. Semistructured, in-depth interviews were conducted with 13 low-income Eritrean asylum-seeking parents in Israel, aged 25-40, most of whom resided in two-parent households. Data were analyzed, and themes were derived inductively using constructivis

Domains of Family Empowerment for Self-Management in Palliative Care: A Scoping Review.

ObjectiveIn addition to the limited availability of formal palliative care services, which often leads family members to assume primary caregiving roles, family members are also integral partners in the care of patients with serious illness. Empowering family caregivers is essential to strengthen their capacity to provide care; however, evidence mapping the domains of family empowerment remains limited. This review aims to identify and map the domains of family empowerment for self-management in palliative care.MethodsThis scoping review followed the Arksey and O'Malley framework and was repor

WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT AND INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE IN BANGLADESH: INVESTIGATING THE COMPLEX RELATIONSHIP.

The aim of this study was to assess whether women's empowerment ensures reduced intimate partner violence (IPV). The differential relationship between women's empowerment and IPV among married women in Bangladesh was investigated using 2007 Demographic and Health Survey data. Logistic regression models were used to assess whether women's empowerment had any influence on their likelihood of experiencing IPV while controlling for other covariates. The analyses revealed that older cohorts of women, who were more empowered, were more vulnerable to physical violence than less-empowered, younger wom
