Subdural empyema is a surgical emergency; if not recognized and managed early, it may prove fatal. In most of the cases, condition is preceded by paranasal sinusitis, otitis media or trauma. The authors report a previously undescribed case of spontaneous subdural empyema associated with Gaucher disease that had a good outcome following burr hole evacuation of subdural empyema and parenteral antibiotics. Patients with Gaucher disease may be vulnerable to severe bacterial infections, due to defective function of phagocytic cells and hypersplenism.

We present a case of refractory infantile subdural empyema secondary to pneumococcal meningitis. Initial treatment was with antibiotics and multiple burr hole drainage of the subdural space. As there was no significant improvement with this standard procedure, craniectomy, and juxtapositioning of the temporalis muscle was conducted and the patient recovered promptly.

Pasteurella is a Gram-negative coccobacillus found in 70-90% of oral cavities of cats, and as well, is isolated from the digestive systems of dogs, rats, rabbits, monkeys, and other animals. Pasteurella multocida has been known to cause infections in humans, the most familiar being soft tissue infection after animal bites. However, this organism may affect a variety of systems, causing serious disease. Pasteurella multocida can cause septic arthritis, osteomyelitis, pneumonia, endocarditis, meningitis, and septicemia. We report a case of bacterial meningitis, subgaleal, subdural, and epidural

Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is a coagulase-positive staphylococcus that colonizes the skin and mucosal surfaces of dogs. Although human infection remains uncommon, it is increasingly recognized as an emerging zoonotic cause of invasive disease. We report, to our knowledge, the first documented case of postoperative subdural empyema caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) in a 72-year-old man with household canine exposure. The patient initially underwent hemicraniectomy for evacuation of a traumatic subdural hematoma and subsequently re-presented with progres

Nocardiosis of the central nervous system and spine, in particular, is a rare infection with significant morbidity and mortality. Treatment is usually with antibiotics and surgical drainage or biopsy. The authors report a case of a 49-year-old man who presented with chronic lower back pain and paraplegia. He was found to have spinal subdural empyema caused by Nocardia farcinica. Laminectomy and sampling of the subdural collection were performed, and the patient was treated with triple intravenous antibiotics (linezolid, amikacin and ciprofloxacin). There was no neurological recovery at follow-

Calcified subdural empyemas (CSEs) are rare neurosurgical pathologies that can be mistaken for calcified chronic subdural hematomas. Patients often present with symptoms of worsening headache, seizures, or hemiparesis without general malaise or systemic illness. Here we report the tenth documented case of CSE in a 51-year-old man from South Africa with no surgical history who developed bilateral, culture-positive collections. Additionally, we provide a review of the current literature on this condition. The majority of CSEs occur in males from developing countries who previously underwent neur

Subdural empyema (SDE) is an infection between the dura and arachnoid mater, presenting with symptoms such as fever, headache, altered sensorium, neurological deficits, and seizures. Due to its rapidly progressive nature, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial. This paper aims to identify common pathogens, imaging findings, and the necessity of emergent neurosurgical intervention. We present the case of a 49-year-old woman with an SDE who underwent craniotomy to evacuate pus and hematoma. Cultures confirmed Streptococcus intermedius, and the patient improved postoperatively with the complet

Acanthamoeba-induced meningoencephalitis is a rare and frequently fatal condition. We describe a case of acute Acanthamoeba meningoencephalitis complicated by subdural empyema in a previously healthy 50-year-old man who presented with high-grade fever, neck stiffness and left-sided hemiparesis. Neuroimaging revealed a subdural collection in the right fronto-temporo-parietal region, while cerebrospinal fluid analysis demonstrated neutrophilic pleocytosis with trophozoites morphologically consistent with Acanthamoeba species. The patient underwent burr-hole evacuation of the subdural collection

Intracranial tuberculous subdural empyema (ITSE) is extremely rare. To our knowledge, only four cases of microbiologically confirmed ITSE have been reported in the English literature to date. Most cases have arisen in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis regardless of trauma. A 46-year-old man presented to the emergency department after a fall. On arrival, he complained of pain in his head, face, chest and left arm. He was alert and oriented. An initial neurological examination was normal. Radiologic evaluation revealed multiple fractures of his skull, ribs, left scapula and radius. Though he

Subtentorial subdural empyema is a rare form of intracranial suppuration. We present two cases treated at our department within the last 11 years. The common source was an ear infection. Both patients presented with headache, fever, vomiting and stiff neck. Only one patient had disturbed consciousness. Both patients received aggressive antibiotic therapy. The first patient was treated with suboccipital craniectomy and evacuation of pus collection, while the second patient was treated conservatively with antibiotics and ventriculoperitoneal shunt for his associated supratentorial hydrocephalus.

We reported a fourteen years old male with subdural empyema followed by consecutive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination. He was admitted to our hospital, complaining incomplete paresis of the left upper extremities, headache and high fever. The first MRI T2-weighted image at admission revealed an abnormal high intensity in the right frontal subdural space, indicating an abscess. Antibiotics therapy and a burr hole operation were effective and he made a remarkable recovery. One month later, the third MRI T2-weighted image showed an abnormal high intensity in the deep white matter of th

Subdural empyema is a rare but serious complication of paranasal sinusitis which may result in death or permanent disability in a significant proportion of cases. A case is presented in which displacement of a premolar root in the maxillary sinus led to a subdural empyema and a resultant left-sided hemiplegia. This case illustrates the necessity of early surgical intervention to remove displaced roots in the maxillary antrum in order to prevent the serious complications of paranasal sinusitis.

The authors report 3 cases of subdural empyema with different course and outcome. In all of them subdural empyema developed as a complication of chronic maxillary sinusitis. In the first case a coexistent brain abscess was the cause of death. In the second case operation carried out when the patient was in extremely severe condition failed to prevent death since the diagnosis had been made too late. Complete recovery was obtained in the third case owing to early clinical diagnosis confirmed with angiography, followed by early surgical treatment of the primary focus and early craniotomy. The im

Subdural empyema is an intracranial infection that has remained difficult to diagnose and to treat. Seventeen patients with this infection, treated between 1967 and 1974, are analyzed and compared to published series with particular regard to diagnosis using newer procedures and treatment, considering the primary focus of infection. The infection is usually located in the supratentorial spaces, is often bilateral, and results most often from para-nasal sinusitis (single most common cause), otitis, neurosurgical operative infections, and meningitis in infants. Patients suffering from subdural e

Intracranial subdural empyema represents a rare yet severe infection affecting the brain. Advances in diagnostic techniques and therapeutic interventions have significantly decreased the previously observed mortality rate of 100.0% to a current range of 4.0-9.0%. This notable improvement can be attributed primarily to a reduction in the time taken to initiate treatment. The initial challenge lies in recognizing the potential presence of this condition. Numerous case reports, series and retrospective studies have contributed to the understanding of this issue; however, the clinical epidemiology

This case report describes the successful diagnosis and surgical management of a cerebellar subdural empyema in a 14-year-old Domestic Shorthair cat. The patient presented with a left-sided head tilt and right-sided hemiparesis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a right-sided extra-axial cavitated lesion in the cerebellum, and mild right-sided otitis media without evidence of otitis interna. Surgical decompression was performed, guided by the use of a 3D-printed model, and purulent material was evacuated. Bacterial culture identified Peptostreptococcus canis, Filifactor villosus, and a

Mycoplasma hominis is a commensal of the genitourinary tract, which is infrequently associated with urogenital infections. Extra-urogenital infections due to M. hominis are rare. Here, we report an unusual case of M. hominis subdural empyema in a woman occurring shortly after delivery. The patient presented with symptoms suggestive of bacterial meningitis. Spinal imaging revealed a subdural empyema that required neurosurgical intervention. Cultures from intraoperatively obtained biopsies identified M. hominis as the causative pathogen. The patient was treated with oral moxifloxacin for 4 weeks
