Protein Nanofibers as Pickering Emulsion Stabilizers: Impacts of Protein Source and Mechanistic Insights into Emulsion Stabilization.

Protein nanofibers (PNFs) derived from lysozyme and bovine serum albumin (BSA) were employed as stabilizers for oil-in-water Pickering emulsions. Emulsions containing up to 50 wt % canola oil were prepared and remained stable for ∼6 months, demonstrating highly competitive performance relative to previously reported biobased Pickering stabilizers. Formulation and processing variables were systematically analyzed to determine mechanistic impacts on emulsion formation and stability. Scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy were used to evaluate protein nanofiber adsorption at the

Mechanistic investigation of ultrasonic demulsification of water-in-oil emulsions.

Oilfield-produced fluids commonly contain high water fractions and form stable water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions, complicating downstream treatment and resource recovery. In this paper, experimental characterization and numerical simulation were combined to elucidate the power-dependent mechanism of ultrasound-assisted chemical demulsification. We first optimized ultrasonic (US) power, irradiation time, and demulsifier concentration through an orthogonal experimental design and then conducted single-factor experiments to examine changes in dehydration efficiency, viscosity, and droplet characterist

A surfactant-free, eco-sustainable detergent utilizing collagen Pickering emulsions.

The extensive utilization of synthetic detergents presents a substantial threat to the global environment. Inspired by traditional practices in Asia-such as using rice-washing water for cleaning-this study develops a green, non-toxic, and surfactant-free detergent. The innovative detergent was fabricated using natural collagen extracted from delimed bovine hide trimmings as the core component, requiring no chemical modification. It forms in situ Pickering emulsions on contaminated surfaces, effectively encapsulating and removing oil stains. Interfacial desorption energy measurements indicate t

Hybrid Emulsions for the Efficient Formation of Giant Unilamellar Vesicles.

Droplet-templated production of giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) (mediated by either nanoparticles or surfactants) offers an emergent platform for the bottom-up assembly of synthetic cells. Currently, these techniques suffer from inherent efficacy and scalability challenges, which hinder the possibility to generate biologically relevant vesicles (i.e., supporting transmembrane proteins) for therapeutic applications. Here, we report on a novel methodology that harnesses synergistic effects of hybrid emulsions (i.e., combining fluorosurfactants with fluorinated silica nanoparticles, FSiNPs) to

Self-assembly of phycocyanin-nanochitin complexes for antioxidant Pickering emulsions.

This study developed a Pickering stabilizer based on polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) of phycocyanin (PC) and nanochitin (NCh), in order to combine the antioxidant functionality of PC with the nanofibrillar structural support of NCh. At an optimal 1:4 mass ratio, enthalpy-driven complexation yielded a unique "bead-on-string" nanostructure, which resulted in an optimal three-phase contact angle of 80.63 ± 1.29° and facilitated the formation of a thick, viscoelastic interfacial film, as revealed by QCM-D. The complexes exhibited a dual-stabilization mechanism, combining interfacial film reinforc

Magnetic artificial spores for robust interfacial biodesulfurization in pickering emulsions.

Whole-cell Pickering interfacial biocatalysis effectively overcomes the formidable mass-transfer limitations of hydrophobic substrates in aqueous systems. However, practical implementation is severely hindered by biocatalyst vulnerability under extreme industrial environments and the inherent challenge of post-reaction emulsion separation. Herein, the artificial spore concept is specifically adapted to overcome biodesulfurization bottlenecks by sequentially encapsulating Gordonia sp. WQ-01A cells with a conformal polydopamine layer and oleic acid-modified magnetic nanoparticles. The biomimetic

Physical and Chemical Compatibility of Etomidate and Propofol Injectable Emulsions.

INTRODUCTION: The mixture of etomidate and propofol is widely used in clinical practice to improve efficacy of general anesthesia and to minimize side effects. As a thermodynamically unstable system, emulsion is prone to destabilization through mechanisms including coalescence, flocculation, and creaming. Such unwanted phenomenon can induce fat embolism after intravenous administration. This study was aimed to investigate the physical and chemical stability of the mixture of etomidate and propofol in the dosage form of emulsion. METHODS: This compatibility study focused on the critical qualit

Development of Gel-in-Oil Emulsions for Khellin Topical Delivery.

Hypopigmentation is a progressive dermatological condition caused by a reduction in the skin pigment, melanin. Its treatment is considered a challenge due to the lack of a highly efficient single therapy. Currently, the main treatments include photochemotherapy, application of corticosteroids and immunosuppressants, and laser. Khellin-based gel-in-oil emulsions appear as a promising alternative since they ensure a concentration of the drug, a natural furanochromone, at the desired location, skin surface. Khellin promotes repigmentation as it forms a dark colored complex after solar irradiation

Lipid emulsions for parenterally fed term and late preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Lipid emulsions (LE) form a vital component of infant nutrition for critically ill, late preterm or term infants, particularly for those with gastrointestinal failure. Conventionally used soybean oil-based LE (S-LE) have high polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content and phytosterols, which may contribute to adverse effects including parenteral nutrition-associated liver disease (PNALD). OBJECTIVES: To compare the safety and efficacy of all LE for parenteral nutrition (PN) in term and late preterm infants (between 34 weeks' gestation and 36 weeks' and six days' gestation) with or

Hypertriglyceridemia in extremely low birth weight infants receiving lipid emulsions.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of high TG levels in extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants and what the risk factors are for high TG levels. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a prospective observational study of triglyceride concentrations in extremely low birth weight infants receiving lipid infusions. Lipid infusions were begun at 0.5 grams/kg/day at age one day and the dose advanced by 0.5 grams/kg/day. Triglyceride concentrations were drawn when the dose reached 1 and 2 grams/kg/day. We compared infants with normal triglyceride levels (≤200 mg/dl) with those with elevated triglyceride

Protection against myocardial ischaemia by prior haemodilution with fluorocarbon emulsions.

The possible prophylactic effects of Fluosol-DA 20% (FDA) haemodilution against myocardial hypoxia were studied in two groups of anaesthetized immature pigs. Precalibrated 200-micron diameter oxygen microelectrodes were inserted to the myocardium of the left ventricle. One group of animals was haemodiluted with FDA and both groups received 100% oxygen (plus halothane). The lower one-third of the left anterior descending coronary artery was occluded; this caused no significant cardiovascular changes. Analysis from the microelectrodes in the most hypoxic areas of the myocardium revealed signific

Potato starch/naringenin complexes for high-stability Pickering emulsions: Structure, properties, and emulsion stabilization mechanism.

In this study, potato starch (PS)/naringenin (NAR) complex was prepared, and its properties and emulsification behavior were evaluated. The experimental results demonstrated that NAR successfully formed a complex with PS molecules through hydrogen bonds and other non-covalent interactions. The emulsifying capacity (ROV) of PS/NAR complex with 16 % composite ratio was 0.9999, which was higher than PS (ROV = 0.3329) (p < 0.05). Based on particle property analysis and molecular dynamics simulation, the mechanism of improving the emulsification performance might be the action of the benzene ring o

Topical delivery of acetyl hexapeptide-8 from different emulsions: influence of emulsion composition and internal structure.

Acetyl hexapeptide-8 (AH-8) is a well-known component of anti-aging products and was recently explored as a promising topical treatment of blepharospasm. Although AH-8 appears in a variety of cosmetic products, its skin penetration is sparsely studied and controversially discussed. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of the vehicle type on the AH-8 delivery to the skin. Besides skin permeation experiments with Franz type diffusion cells, the spatial distribution of AH-8 in the stratum corneum after a real in-use application was investigated by in vitro tape
