A case of severe hypercalcemia secondary to carcinoma of the lung is described in which hypokalemic alkalosis, renal failure and pancreatitis were also present. The relative importance of the few bone metastases found at autopsy is considered, and a probable endocrine-like effect of the tumour in the development of the hypercalcemia is postulated. Treatment of the hypercalcemia included administration of corticosteroids and disodium EDTA, peritoneal dialysis and subtotal parathyroidectomy; the most effective of these was peritoneal dialysis. Subtotal parathyroidectomy failed to produce a furth

PTH-like peptide (PLP) is produced by tumors commonly associated with hypercalcemia as well as nonneoplastic tissues and several endocrine glands and tumors. To characterize the distribution of PLP in human endocrine tissues and tumors, we localized PLP in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded material using the avidin-biotin-peroxidase technique with polyclonal antisera. Among peptide hormone-producing tissues, PLP was identified in nontumorous adenohypophysis and pituitary adenomas; medullary thyroid carcinomas; normal, hyperplastic, and adenomatous parathyroids; adrenal medulla and pheochromocyt

BACKGROUND Adrenal gland cysts are rare and often occur without any symptoms. Even with advanced imaging modalities, it is still difficult to differentiate a benign adrenal neoplasm from a malignant one. Therefore, it is difficult to arrive at a definitive diagnosis and provide treatment. CASE REPORT We describe a patient with asymptomatic adrenal incidentaloma. The patient was lost to follow-up until 7 years later. On resuming follow-up, an enlarged suprarenal tumor was noted on ultrasound imaging. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 6×4 cm tumor mass, and the peripheral part expressed prog

The author investigated histopathology of 615 consecutive duodenal specimens in our pathology laboratory. Computer search of the duodenal lesions was performed. Review of histological slides was done, when appropriate. The duodenal specimens were composed of 567 benign lesions and 48 malignant lesions. The 567 benign lesions were composed of chronic non-specific duodenitis in 334 cases (60.0%), duodenal ulcer in 101 cases (17,8%), heterotopic gastric mucosa in 81 cases (14.3%), hyperplastic polyp in 16 cases (2.8%), Brunner's gland hyperplasia in 14 cases (2.5%), Brunner's gland adenoma in 8 c

This article outlines strategies on how to approach equine endocrine disorders based on clinical signs and clinical pathologic data. In the 1987 Veterinary Clinics of North America: Equine Practice article on evaluating equine endocrine function, Beech stated that the numbers of hormonal assays available to use in horses was limited. Unfortunately, not much has changed since then. With the advent of convenient assay kits for many hormones and cofactors available in human medicine, it is possible to submit samples to laboratories for measurement of a wide range of endogenous substances. Cutaneous adnexal tumours can be a diagnostic challenge for the pathologist. This is particularly true in the case of tumours with sweat gland differentiation, due to a large number of rare entities, a multiplicity of names to designate the same neoplasms and consequent lack of consensus regarding their classification and nomenclature. In the traditional view, sweat gland tumours were divided into eccrine and apocrine. However, this has been challenged in recent years, and in fact many of these tumours may have both eccrine and apocrine variants. Some display more complex features and defy cla

Historically, carcinoids have long been known to be a morphologically distinct class of rare intestinal tumors that behave less aggressively than the more common intestinal adenocarcinomas. It was not until much later that their endocrine nature was recognized. Some authors restrict the term carcinoid to intestinal endocrine tumors, whereas others include a large variety of neuroendocrine tumors. In the WHO classification of 1980, carcinoids were defined as tumors of the diffuse neuroendocrine system that are either benign or neoplasms with a more favored prognosis than carcinomas. They are ch

Neuroendocrine neoplasms are diverse in terms of sites of origin, functional status, and degrees of aggressiveness. This review will introduce some of the common features of neuroendocrine neoplasms and will explore the differences in pathology, classification, biology, and clinical management between tumors of different anatomic sites, specifically, the lung, pancreas, and prostate. Despite sharing neuroendocrine differentiation and histologic evidence of the neuroendocrine phenotype in most organs, well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumors (WD-NETs) and poorly differentiated neuroendocrine c

A case of primary adenocarcinoma of the urinary bladder occurring in a patient with type 1 multiple endocrine adenomatosis (MEA) is presented. The patient was a 36-year-old female who had a past history of type 1 multiple endocrine adenomatosis, namely, adenomatosis of the parathyroid gland, insulin and gastrin-producing adenomatosis of the pancreas, and prolactin-producing pituitary adenoma. She was admitted in January 1981 with the complaints of gross hematuria, pollakisuria and micturition pain lasting for about one year and a half. Cystoscopic examination revealed four solid tumors in the

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is an adnexal neoplasm which typically occurs on periorbital skin and demonstrates overlapping histopathologic features with primary mucinous carcinoma of the skin (MCS). Herein, we report a patient who developed five distinct lesions of EMPSGC and MCS over an eight-year period, some of which occurred on periorbital sites and others which occurred on the lower face. We further sought to better characterize these tumors on a molecular basis; targeted next generation sequencing analysis of two discrete tumors revealed identical missense va

Neuroendocrine neoplasms of the ear pose a diagnostic challenge because clinical symptoms are no specific. Definite diagnosis is made by histopathological analysis with immunohystochemical evalutation. Therapy consists in a complete surgical resection. Controversial terminology of the neoplasm arises from the differentiation of these tumors composed of both endocrine and exocrine glands. Middle ear localization is an extremely rare presentation but less aggressive than gastrointestinal tract or lung localizations which are the most frequent. Radio-diagnostic analyses are necessary follow-up fo

Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is a rare form of neoplasm affecting the thyroid gland. This neuroendocrine tumor is capable of releasing active substances causing systemic manifestation in the form of flushing, diarrhea, and uncommonly, Ectopic Cushing's syndrome (ECS). MTC can be hereditary as a part of multiple endocrine neoplasm type 2 syndrome (MEN2) or arise sporadically. We report a case of a 74-year-old female presenting with chronic diarrhea, in whom diagnosis of sporadic MTC was delayed due to previous history of gastrointestinal (GI) disturbances. The patient developed liver metastas

Reports on patients with systemic amyloidosis-associated plasma cell dyscrasia (PCD) who have multiple endocrine tumors are very rare. Here we describe such a case. The patient was a 74-yr-old man with amyloid light-chain (AL) amyloidosis-associated PCD who had a null-cell adenoma of the pituitary and a latent papillary carcinoma of the thyroid gland. as well as a tubular adenoma of the sigmoid colon. The amyloid protein deposits reacted with the antibody to the n-immunoglobulin light chain. Since PCD by itself may be a risk factor for the development of subsequent neoplasms, the careful clini

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is a rare autosomal dominant syndrome caused by inactivating pathogenic variants in the tumor suppressor gene menin 1 on chromosome 11q13 (Falchetti et al., 2009). The syndrome is characterized by neoplasia in two or more endocrine glands and has a high degree of penetrance. Pathogenic germline multiple neoplasia type 1 variants primarily result in neoplasia affecting the parathyroid glands, the pancreatic islet cells, and the anterior pituitary in combination. Primary hyperparathyroidism is the most common pathological manifestation of the syndrome,

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Acute chest pain can be the first manifestation of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1(MEN1)-associated thymic neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN). Comprehensive treatment may be an effective strategy for MEN1-associated NEN.
ABSTRACT: Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1(MEN1)-associated thymic neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN) is caused by the mutation of tumor suppressor MEN1 gene. Patients with MEN1-associated NEN initially presenting with acute chest pain are very rare. In the manuscript, we reported a case of a 45-year-old man who developed MEN1-associated NEN with acute ch

BACKGROUND: Medullary thyroid carcinoma and pituitary adenoma are neuroendocrine tumors and their coexistence has not been reported in the literature, previously. Medullary thyroid carcinoma is a neoplasm of the thyroid gland arising from parafollicular c-cells producing calcitonin, and pituitary adenoma is a benign hyperplasia of the cells of the pituitary gland. Coexistence of these neoplasms can be explained by being affected by simultaneous primary neoplasms or tumor-to-tumor metastasis phenomenon.

OBJECTIVE: Adrenal tumors present with clinical features and signs unique to their specific hormonal hypersecretion. However, there have been cases in which the clinical expression has been in conflict with the histologic features of the tumor. In this communication we report an unusual clinical presentation of an adrenal cortical tumor with histologic features of an oncocytoma that clinically mimicked a pheochromocytoma.
DESIGN: A 49-year old man was referred to our Unit due to type B aortic dissection and a mass of the left adrenal gland. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging c

Multiple endocrine neoplasia, type 2b, is a disorder of unknown etiology with major involvement of the thyroid and adrenal glands, the autonomic nervous system, and connective tissue. It is transmissible with an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance, but since most cases are not familial, they presumably represent mutations. The thyroid gland exhibits bilateral medullary carcinoma, which is a metastasizing lethal neoplasm in the syndrome requiring total thyroidectomy once abnormal basal or stimulated concentrations of plasma immunoreactive calcitonin have been demonstrated. The adrenal med

This paper is part III of the series on thyroid disorders. Thyroid tumors are the most common endocrine neoplasms. Most of these tumors are benign hyperplastic or colloid nodules or benign follicular adenomas. However, 5% to 10% of the lesions that come to medical attention are carcinomas. A major clinical challenge is establishing which nodules are hyperplastic, benign, or malignant. History, clinical findings, ultrasonography, and fine-needle aspiration biopsy are the mainstays for diagnosis. There are 3 main histologic types of thyroid cancer: differentiated, medullary, and anaplastic. Diff

From results of phylogenetical investigations of the neuron-paraneuron or neuroendocrine system it is known that cells producing hormonal peptides appear first in the nervous system, then also as disseminated cells of an open or closed type in the mucosa of the alimentary tract, and, lastly, as the parenchyma of the classical endocrine glands. In all these three parts of the neuroendocrine system the parenchymal cells can undergo neoplastic transformation, expressing "eutopic" and/or "ectopic" peptide hormones and/or biogenic amines. The neuro-paraneuronal tumours arising in the central or per
