The effects of indium-chloride (InCl3) on hepatocyte structure and function were studied in male rats injected with doses of 0, 10, 20, or 40 mg of InCl3/kg and killed after 16 hours. Fragmentation and degranulation of the rough endoplasmic reticulum and increased numbers of In- and Fe-containing autophagic lysosomes were the most marked cellular changes observed by electron microscopy. Electron microscopic findings in 15 cases of diffuse large cell lymphoma were correlated with other morphologic features, surface immunotype and cytoplasmic immunoglobulin content. Barr bodies are described in the interstitial cells of testes of a chromatin-positive patient with Klinefelter syndrome. Ultrastructural studies confirm the origin of the Barr body from the nuclear chromatin. METHODS: Liver fibrosis was induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats with CCl4 for 12 wk, and the rats were divided into two groups. This study describes morphological changes during capsule formation of Trichinella spiralis with emphasis on nuclei within the capsule. Ultrastructural changes of hepatocytes were studied in liver biopsy specimens obtained from 21 patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
