Use of single-use ultra-slim endoscopes for evaluation of pediatric esophageal varices: A pilot feasibility study.

Esophageal varices (EV) need monitoring in patients with portal hypertension. In 2022, a single-use ultra-slim (3.5 mm) gastroscope was approved for use in children and adults. This study evaluated if an ultra-slim gastroscope could evaluate, grade, and corroborate the presence of EV in sedated pediatric patients as compared to standard oral gastroscopes (>8.6 mm). Ten pediatric subjects with suspected or known EV underwent surveillance endoscopy using the ultra-slim endoscope followed by the standard gastroscope under sedation. Esophageal findings were analyzed using images from both procedur

UV light-based reprocessing of flexible endoscopes without working channel in Oto-Rhino-Laryngology: an effective method?

BACKGROUND: Reprocessing of flexible endoscopes (FEs) is often expensive, time consuming, and becomes increasingly complex, due to rising demands of hygiene. After beneficial results in reprocessing of rigid endoscopes using Impelux™ UV-C light technology, we tested the same method for reprocessing of FEs without working channel. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Testing was performed on FEs without working channel after routine clinical use (transnasal flexible endoscopy). Disinfection consisted of mechanical precleaning and 60 s exposure to Impelux™ UV-C light technology. Bacterial contamination was t

Diagnostic and Clinical Performance of Single-Use Versus Reusable Gastrointestinal Endoscopes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic procedures are fundamental in the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal disorders. However, concerns over pathogen transmission have driven the development of single-use and partially single-use endoscopes (reusable endoscopes with disposable components). A comprehensive synthesis of comparative evidence is essential to inform decisions regarding clinical adoption. METHODS: We systematically searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and trial registries for randomized controlled trials, non-randomized comparative studies, diagnostic accuracy stu

Percutaneous endoscopic necrosectomy for extensive walled-off necrosis using two endoscopes simultaneously: a report of two cases.

Endoscopic step-up approach, which involves endoscopic ultrasound-guided drainage followed by necrosectomy, has been suggested as a potentially advantageous alternative to the surgical step-up approach for walled-off necrosis (WON) following acute pancreatitis. Recent studies indicate that although there is no significant difference in major complications or mortality between the two approaches, the endoscopic step-up approach is often preferred due to shorter hospital stays and lower re-intervention rates. However, a multidisciplinary approach should be considered for complex cases. Transgast

Microbiological surveillance after automated reprocessing of gastrointestinal endoscopes in routine clinical practice: A prospective randomized microbiological surveillance study.

Microbiological surveillance is used to monitor the quality of gastrointestinal endoscope reprocessing, but prospective data comparing automated endoscope reprocessor systems under routine workflow conditions remain limited. We conducted an exploratory, single-center, prospective randomized surveillance study of 222 endoscope-use episodes involving patient-used forward-viewing upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopes. Endoscope-use episodes were allocated 1:1:1 to strongly acidic electrolyzed water, ozonated water, or peracetic acid using an Excel-generated random-number procedure (n = 74 e

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Guidance on Flexible Gastrointestinal Endoscopes: Lessons Learned from Outbreaks, Infection Control.

Flexible endoscopes require cleaning, high-level disinfection, and sterilization between each patient use to reduce risk of transmitting pathogens. Public health investigations have identified concerns, including endoscope damage, mishandling, and reprocessing deficiencies, placing patients at risk for transmission of bacterial, viral, and other pathogens. Findings from outbreak investigations and other studies have led to innovations in endoscope design, use, and reprocessing, yet infection risks related to contaminated or damaged endoscopes remain. Strict adherence to infection control guide

Comparison of visualization of the middle ear by microscope and endoscopes of 30° and 45° through posterior tympanotomy.

INTRODUCTION: Endoscopic-assisted microsurgery of the middle ear enables the field of view of the surgeon to be expanded during the removal of inflammatory tissue from the tympanic cavity and during myringo- and ossiculoplasty. Canal wall up tympanoplasty with posterior tympanotomy is a gold standard in surgical treatment of chronic otitis media. Most applications of endoscopy in middle ear surgery concern exclusively the endoscopic transcanal approach. AIM: To determine the usefulness of endoscopic visualization during the standard surgical approach through the posterior tympanotomy. MATERI

Determining the best method for assessing microbiological contamination on flexible endoscopes without a working channel: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Flexible endoscopes (FEs) without a working channel can become extensively contaminated. Adequate reprocessing is critical and the quality of these processes can be verified by microbiological sampling. This study aimed to determine the ability to detect colony-forming units (CFUs) after sampling used FEs without a working channel for four different sampling techniques. METHODS: FEs without a working channel were collected after clinical use. Manual pre-cleaning with tap water was performed. A sample was collected from the distal 8-10 cm and tip of the FE by one of four sampling t

Three-dimensional versus two-dimensional endoscopes in anatomical orientation of the middle ear and in simulated surgical tasks.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional endoscopes provide a stereoscopic view of the operating field, facilitating depth perception compared to two-dimensional systems, but are not yet widely accepted. Existing research addresses performance and preference, but there are no studies that quantify anatomical orientation in endoscopic ear surgery. METHODS: Participants (n = 70) were randomised in starting with either the two-dimensional or three-dimensional endoscope system to perform one of two tasks: anatomical orientation using a labelled three-dimensional printed silicone model of the middle ear, or

Development and validation of an algorithm to complete colonoscopy using standard endoscopes in patients with prior incomplete colonoscopy.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Incomplete colonoscopy may occur as a result of colon angulation (adhesions or diverticulosis), endoscope looping, or both. Specialty endoscopes/devices have been shown to successfully complete prior incomplete colonoscopies, but may not be widely available. Radiographic or other image-based evaluations have been shown to be effective but may miss small or flat lesions, and colonoscopy is often still indicated if a large lesion is identified. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate an algorithm to determine the optimum endoscope to ensure completion of

Non-Linear Image Distortions in Flexible Fiberoptic Endoscopes and their Effects on Calibrated Horizontal Measurements Using High-Speed Videoendoscopy.

Laryngeal images obtained via high-speed videoendoscopy are an invaluable source of information for the advancement of voice science because they can capture the true cycle-to-cycle vibratory characteristics of the vocal folds in addition to the transient behaviors of the phonatory mechanism, such as onset, offset, and breaks. This information is obtained through relating the spatial and temporal features from acquired images using objective measurements or subjective assessments. While these images are calibrated temporally, a great challenge is the lack of spatial calibration. Recently, a la
