The endothelium-dependent and endothelium-independent vasodilation of arterial and venous coronary bypass grafts and of epicardial conduit vessels and microcirculatory coronary vessels supplied by these grafts was investigated. PURPOSE: To compare corneal endothelial cell loss after cataract surgery by phacoemulsification and by Aqualase.
METHODS: This was a prospective, randomized study of 75 eyes of 75 patients undergoing cataract surgery. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either phacoemulsification or Aqualase for cataract removal. The function of the endothelial mediators on lung vessels is progressively understood. Our experimental results, in agreement with those from other laboratories, show that prostacyclin and nitric oxide do not affect basal pulmonary vascular tone, but that they limit the pulmonary hypertension secondary to alveolar hypoxia, or to lung injury. The role of endothelins remains harder to define, partly because their vascular effects are opposed by nitric oxide in intact animals.

PURPOSE: To evaluate long term effects of perfluorophenanthrene (C12F24), a perfluorocarbon fluid, in the anterior chamber of the human eye, where residual perfluorophenanthrene was retained in the eye postoperatively.

Emerging evidence suggests the endothelium produces several substances capable of locally regulating organ blood flow. Vasoactive prostaglandins, endothelium-derived relaxing factor, and endothelin are examples of these vasoactive substances. Abnormalities of endothelial function may contribute to the pathogenesis of disease in several circumstances, including hypertension, diabetes, and septicemia. Evidence for the endothelium as a regulator of regional perfusion and several of the endothelium-derived substances and their potential role in disease are reviewed.
