Selective and Functional-Group-Tolerant Photoalkylation of Imines by Energy-Transfer Photocatalysis.

Basic amines show broad bioactivity and remain a promising source of new medicines. The direct photoalkylation of imines offers a promising strategy for complex amines. However, the lack of efficient imine photoreactivity hinders this reaction and remains a fundamental limitation in organic photochemistry. We report an efficient photoalkylation of imines that provides primary amines directly without protecting or leaving groups. The transformation effects C-H addition across N-H imines under energy-transfer photocatalysis by a ketone. Our method is distinguished from organometallic, metal-cata

Ultrafast energy transfer between π-stacked aromatic rings upon inner-valence ionization.

Non-covalently bound aromatic systems are ubiquitous and govern the physicochemical properties of various organic materials. They are important to many phenomena of biological and technological relevance, such as protein folding, base-pair stacking in nucleic acids, molecular recognition and self-assembly, DNA-drug interactions, crystal engineering and organic electronics. Nevertheless, their molecular dynamics and chemical reactivity, particularly in electronic excited states, are not fully understood. Here, we observe intermolecular Coulombic decay in benzene dimers, (C6H6)2-the simplest pro

Interlaced proton grid therapy - Linear energy transfer and relative biological effectiveness distributions.

PURPOSE: Interlaced beams have previously been proposed for delivering proton grid therapy. This study aims to assess dose-averaged LET (LETd) and RBE-weighted dose (DRBE) distributions of such beam geometries, and compare them with conventional intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT). METHODS: IMPT plans and four different interlaced proton grid therapy plans were generated for five patient cases (esophagus, lung, liver, prostate, anus). The constant RBE = 1.1 was assumed for optimization. The LETd was subsequently Monte Carlo calculated for each plan and used as input for two LET-dependen

Reoptimization of Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy Plans Based on Linear Energy Transfer.

PURPOSE: We describe a treatment plan optimization method for intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) that avoids high values of linear energy transfer (LET) in critical structures located within or near the target volume while limiting degradation of the best possible physical dose distribution. METHODS AND MATERIALS: To allow fast optimization based on dose and LET, a GPU-based Monte Carlo code was extended to provide dose-averaged LET in addition to dose for all pencil beams. After optimizing an initial IMPT plan based on physical dose, a prioritized optimization scheme is used to modify

Distance-Dependent Triplet Energy Transfer between CdSe Nanocrystals and Surface Bound Anthracene.

We investigate triplet energy transfer (TET) across variable-length aromatic oligo-p-phenylene and aliphatic bridges in a covalently linked CdSe nanocrystal (NC)-bridge-anthracene hybrid system. Photon upconversion measurements in saturated 9,10-diphenylanthracene hexane solutions under air-free conditions at room temperature provided the steady-state rate of TET (ket) across this interface. For flexible transmitters, ket is similar for different lengths of aliphatic bridges, suggesting that the ligands bend backward. For the rigid phenylene spacer, triplet sensitization of anthracene transmit

Resonance energy transfer between fluorescent BSA protected Au nanoclusters and organic fluorophores.

Bovine serum albumin (BSA) protected nanoclusters (Au and Ag) represent a group of nanomaterials that holds great promise in biophysical applications due to their unique fluorescence properties and lack of toxicity. These metal nanoclusters have utility in a variety of disciplines including catalysis, biosensing, photonics, imaging and molecular electronics. However, they suffer from several disadvantages such as low fluorescence quantum efficiency (typically near 6%) and broad emission spectrum (540 nm to 800 nm). We describe an approach to enhance the apparent brightness of BSA Au clusters b

Photoinduced energy and electron-transfer processes in porphyrin-perylene bisimide symmetric triads.

The photophysics of two symmetric triads, (ZnP)2PBI and (H2P)2PBI, made of two zinc or free-base porphyrins covalently attached to a central perylene bisimide unit has been investigated in dichloromethane and in toluene. The solvent has been shown to affect not only quantitatively but also qualitatively the photophysical behavior. A variety of intercomponent processes (singlet energy transfer, triplet energy transfer, photoinduced charge separation, and recombination) have been time-resolved using a combination of emission spectroscopy and femtosecond and nanosecond time-resolved absorption te

Infrared-Emission Studies of Electronic-to-Vibrational Energy Transfer. IV: Hg + HF.

Electronic-to-vibrational transfer has been observed for the process Hg* (6(3)P(1,0)) + HF(upsilon=0) ? Hg(6(1)S(0)) + HFdagger(upsilon=1-6). (The asterisk symbolizes electronic excitation, the dagger indicates vibrational excitation.) The observations were made by recording ir emission from HFdagger(v=1-6). A set of relative rate constants k(upsilon) were obtained from the observed stationary-state concentrations N(upsilon). The k(upsilon) decrease rapidly with increasing upsilon, up to upsilon = 6. From a comparison of the total HF emission intensity with total CO emission (due to Hg* + CO)

Beyond Common Energy Transfer: Intramolecular Electron Transfer Cascade Controls Triplet Population of a Long-Lived Iron-Anthracene Molecular Dyad.

An iron-anthracene dyad was recently used to populate a microsecond-lived nonluminescent (dark) triplet state, but with a surprisingly low triplet population yield. In-depth spectroscopic experiments highlight that direct energy transfer does not take place, but rather an intramolecular electron-transfer occurs, generating the corresponding reduced iron center and oxidized anthracene moiety, and the final triplet dark state is populated following charge recombination. This electron-transfer cascade reaction mechanism provided the unique opportunity to control the energy level of the charge-sep

Photochemistry of Zr-based MOFs: ligand-to-cluster charge transfer, energy transfer and excimer formation, what else is there?

Understanding of the photocatalytic behaviour of Zr-based MOFs is fundamental for the improved design of new and more efficient photocatalysts. The present work describes steady-state and photodynamical studies on the behavior of two MOFs: Zr-2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate (Zr-NDC) and Zr-4-amino-2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate (Zr-NADC, 65% NDC/35% NADC) in dichloromethane (DCM) and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) suspensions. In the DMF suspension, the Zr-NDC MOF exhibits excimer formation in 280 ps due to the interactions between neighboring linkers. Using the femtosecond transient absorption (fs-

Dynamics of autophagy in response to high linear energy transfer radiation and cancer.

Autophagy process is important in the removal of damaged organelles following radiation interaction. Autophagy maintains stability or balance between intracellular environments at the cellular level. High linear energy transfer radiation is a complex and under-researched field of cancer and radiation biology. In-depth investigation in this area is necessary because autophagy has both protective and detrimental effects on cells, and the specific response can vary depending on factors like the type of radiation, the cell type, and the stage of cancer. Ionizing radiation exposure caused significa

Energy transfer efficiency in the chromophore network strongly coupled to a vibrational mode.

Using methods from condensed matter and statistical physics, we examine the transport of excitons through the photosynthetic complex from a receiving antenna to a reaction center. Writing the equations of motion for the exciton creation-annihilation operators, we are able to describe the exciton dynamics, even in the regime when the reorganization energy is of the order of the intrasystem couplings. We determine the exciton transfer efficiency in the presence of a quenching field and protein environment. While the majority of the protein vibrational modes are treated as a heat bath, we address

A statistical theory of cell killing by radiation of varying linear energy transfer.

A theory is presented that provides an explanation for the observed features of the survival of cultured cells after exposure to densely ionizing high-linear energy transfer (LET) radiation. It starts from a phenomenological postulate based on the linear-quadratic form of cell survival observed for low-LET radiation and uses principles of statistics and fluctuation theory to demonstrate that the effect of varying LET on cell survival can be attributed to random variation of dose to small volumes contained within the nucleus. A simple relation is presented for surviving fraction of cells after

Interaction and energy transfer studies between bovine serum albumin and CdTe quantum dots conjugates: CdTe QDs as energy acceptor probes.

In this paper, a systematic investigation of the interaction of bovine serum albumin (BSA) with water-soluble CdTe quantum dots (QDs) of two different sizes capped with carboxylic thiols is presented based on steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence measurements. Efficient Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) was observed to occur from BSA donor to CdTe acceptor as noted from reduction in the fluorescence of BSA and enhanced fluorescence from CdTe QDs. FRET parameters such as Förster distance, spectral overlap integral, FRET rate constant and efficiency were determined. The quenching of

Preparation of NIR-II Polymer Nanoprobe Through Twisted Intramolecular Charge Transfer and Förster Resonance Energy Transfer of NIR-I Dye.

Near-infrared-II (NIR-II) fluorescence imaging is pivotal in biomedical research. Organic probes exhibit high potential in clinical translation, due to advantages such as precise structure design, low toxicity, and post-modifications convenience. In related preparation, enhancement of NIR-II tail emission from NIR-I dyes is an efficient method. In particular, the promotion of twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) of relevant NIR-I dyes is a convenient protocol. However, present TICT-type probes still show disadvantages in relatively low emission, large particle sizes, or limited choice

Generalizing Reversible Triplet-Triplet Energy Transfer as a Strategy to Increase Excited-State Lifetime in Copper(I) Charge-Transfer Chromophores.

In this work, we generalize reversible triplet-triplet energy transfer (TTET) as a strategy to achieve long (μs range) excited-state lifetimes in copper(I) photosensitizers of the general formula Cu(RNacNac)(CN-Ar) (RNacNac is a substituted β-diketiminate and CN-Ar is an aryl isocyanide). Six new complexes are presented where the isocyanide is substituted with a triplet-acceptor moiety─anthracene, naphthalene, or phenanthrene. In-depth photophysical analysis reveals that energetic matching of the charge-transfer (3CT) and acceptor-localized 3(π→π*) states is key to achieving long triplet excit

Heterogeneous energy-transfer metallaphotocatalysis unlocks direct and site-selective thioglycosylation of unprotected thiosugars.

The creation of glycoconjugates, particularly well-defined glycopeptides, is crucial for advancing biological research and therapeutic development. However, the direct and selective coupling of unprotected thioglycosides to native biomolecules remains a formidable challenge due to the incompatibility of conventional synthetic methods with the delicate and complex functional groups present in these molecules. Here, we report a heterogeneous metallaphotocatalytic strategy that addresses this limitation through an energy-transfer mechanism. By embedding nickel catalytic centers within a photoacti
