Clinical and Genetic Characteristics of Enterobacter cloacae and Klebsiella aerogenes in Children.

This study investigated the clinical and genomic characteristics of Enterobacter cloacae complex (ECC) and Klebsiella aerogenes bloodstream infections (BSIs) in pediatric patients. A total of 115 BSI episodes (ECC: 86, K. aerogenes: 29) from 110 children hospitalized between 2011 and 2024 were retrospectively analyzed. Whole-genome sequencing was performed on available isolates to determine species, sequence types, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes. Clinical characteristics, antibiotic usage, and outcomes were compared between groups. Patients with K. aerogenes BSI were younger and more

Exploring nagZ as a virulence biomarker and treatment target in Enterobacter cloacae.

BACKGROUND: Enterobacter cloacae is increasingly prevalent and resistant to multiple antibiotics, making it a significant pathogen in healthcare settings with high mortality rates. However, its pathogenic mechanisms are not fully understood. RESULTS: In this study, we explored the role of nagZ in regulating the virulence of E. cloacae and its potential as a therapeutic target. Our research showed that pathogenic strains of E. cloacae express higher levels of nagZ than colonizing strains, particularly in simulated infection environments. Deleting nagZ significantly reduced E. cloacae virulence

Impact of simulated microgravity on the growth and proteomic profile of Enterobacter cloacae.

Previous studies have shown decreased microbial diversity in astronaut gut microbiomes during spaceflight, raising potential health concerns. Enterobacter cloacae, a commensal member of the human gastrointestinal tract microbiota, has the potential to cause opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients. However, little is known about how E. cloacae cells adapt to extreme environments such as microgravity, and whether this bacterium is of medical concern for astronauts during long-term spaceflight missions, as astronaut immune systems are compromised by microgravity. To this end, E. cl

Focal pyomyositis caused by Enterobacter in an immunocompetent patient: A case report.

Pyomyositis is a pyogenic infection of skeletal striated muscle, usually found in tropical areas, often in immunocompromised patients. We report a new observation of a nontropical Enterobacter pyomyositis occurring in an immunocompetent female in Tunisia. A 53-year-old patient presented with acute fever and intense myalgia in the right thigh. On clinical examination she had an altered general condition, a fever at 40°C and an important swelling of the lateral side of the right thigh. In biology, she had an inflammatory syndrome. Blood culture had identified Enterobacter. Muscle magnetic resona

Delving into the Mechanisms of Sponge-Associated Enterobacter against Staphylococcal Biofilms.

Staphylococci are one of the most common causes of biofilm-related infections. Such infections are hard to treat with conventional antimicrobials, which often lead to bacterial resistance, thus being associated with higher mortality rates while imposing a heavy economic burden on the healthcare system. Investigating antibiofilm strategies is an area of interest in the fight against biofilm-associated infections. Previously, a cell-free supernatant from marine-sponge-associated Enterobacter sp. inhibited staphylococcal biofilm formation and dissociated the mature biofilm. This study aimed to id

Enterobacter cloacae Sacroiliitis with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome in an Adolescent.

Enterobacter cloacae has emerged as an important nosocomial pathogen, but is rarely a cause of sacroiliitis. Herein, we present the first reported case of Enterobacter cloacae sacroiliitis associated with sepsis and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). A previously healthy 14-year-old boy presented with low-grade fever and pain in the left side of the hip that was aggravated by walking. Pelvic computed tomography (CT) showed normal findings, and the patient received supportive care for transient synovitis with no antibiotics. However, there was no clinical improvement. On the third day

The prevalence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase in environmental isolates of Enterobacter.

The incidence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing strains and multidrug-resistant strains of Enterobacter spp. isolated from the 1312 km long river Narmada was investigated. Out of the 57 isolates of Enterobacter, 73.68% were found to be ESBL producers including the isolates of E. taylorae and isolates of E. agglomerans, which have been characterized for the first time. All the isolates were found susceptible to the antibiotic imipenem. AmpC gene was found in all the Enterobacter strains tested. AmpC beta-lactamase-producing bacterial pathogens may cause major therapeutic fail

Most Enterobacter aerogenes strains in France belong to a prevalent clone.

The aim of this study was to determine the distribution in France of the Enterobacter aerogenes prevalent clone isolated in the hospitals of the Marseille area (A. Davin-Regli, D. Monnet, P. Saux, C. Bosi, R. Charrel, A. Barthelemy, and C. Bollet, J. Clin. Microbiol. 34:1474-1480, 1996). A total of 123 E. aerogenes isolates were collected from 23 hospital laboratories and analyzed by random amplification of polymorphic DNA and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus-PCR to determine their epidemiological relatedness. Molecular typing revealed that 21 of the 23 laboratories had isolated

An outbreak of Enterobacter cloacae associated with contamination of a blood gas machine.

Over a 3-month period, five cases of Enterobacter cloacae bacteraemia occurred on our neonatal unit. In at least three of these, isolation of the organism coincided with clinical deterioration and evidence of sepsis. In one case, the same strain was isolated from an abscess on the neonate's forearm. The isolates had identical sensitivity patterns being resistant to all beta-lactams tested except imipenem. The extended time course of the infections made cross-infection an unlikely explanation. Moreover, close questioning of the staff and observation of their practices with regard to blood cultu

Emergence of resistance to ceftazidime during therapy for Enterobacter cloacae infections.

The mechanism of resistance to ceftazidime in two clinical isolates of Enterobacter cloacae that emerged during therapy with broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotics was studied. Both isolates acquired broad resistance to advanced-spectrum beta-lactam drugs other than imipenem. Biotyping confirmed strain identity in both cases, and no new plasmids were detected in the resistant isolates. Both resistant isolates produced beta-lactamase constitutively. Slow but definite hydrolysis of ceftazidime was demonstrated by using purified beta-lactamase in a spectrophotometric assay. Further evidence that

Enterobacter cloacae ulceration in a failed corneal graft: a case report.

A 70-year-old female developed a bacterial ulcer in a previously rejected corneal graft. Cultures identified the pathogen as Enterobacter cloacae. Intensive topical antibiotic therapy arrested the progress of the ulcer, and the epithelial defect healed in one week; there was no resultant stromal thinning. Factors which may have predisposed the cornea to ulceration by this organism of relatively low virulence include chronic oedema following graft rejection, topical corticosteroid therapy, and tear insufficiency.

Comprehensive analysis of pathogenic mechanisms of Enterobacter cancerogenus ECL9 in silkworms.

Bacterial diseases of silkworms (Bombyx mori L.) cause significant reductions in sericulture and result in huge economic loss. Enterobacter cancerogenus is usually known as an opportunistic host pathogen. The interactions between pathogenic bacteria and silkworms involve complex processes. This study aimed to systematically investigate the genetic traits of E. cancerogenus ECL9 and its effects on the intestinal microbiota, as well as the physiological and immune responses of silkworm intestines to infection. Bacterial genome sequencing indicated that ECL9 possessed multiple antibiotic-resistan

Synergistic Antibacterial Effect and Mechanism of Allicin and an Enterobacter cloacae Bacteriophage.

Enterobacter cloacae is a troublesome pathogen causing refractory infections of the lower respiratory tract, urethra and abdominal cavity, endocarditis, osteomyelitis, and neonatal septicemia. It is prone to developing resistance to ordinary antibiotics and has brought a serious problem to clinical treatment. An artful synergistic combination of an antibacterial natural product allicin and a newly isolated bacteriophage, named BD523, was constructed herein. This combination significantly lowered effective dosage of allicin and effectually overcame bacterial drug-resistance. We experimentally e

Infective endocarditis by Enterobacter cloacae: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Enterobacter species are Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, facultative anaerobes typically motile due to the presence of peritrichous flagella. E. cloacae, the species responsible for the majority of Enterobacter infections in humans, is part of the intestinal microbiota and may cause infection in patients that have previously received antimicrobial therapy or who have been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. E. cloacae may cause several infections, such as pneumonia, urinary tract, skin and soft tissue and intravascular infections. Infective Endocarditis (IE) is a rare disease with notable m

The melatonin-sensitive circadian clock of the enteric bacterium Enterobacter aerogenes.

Circadian clocks are fundamental properties of all eukaryotic organisms and at least some prokaryotic organisms. Recent studies in our laboratory have shown that the gastrointestinal system contains a circadian clock that controls many, if not all, aspects of gastrointestinal function. We now report that at least one species of intestinal bacteria, Enterobacter aerogenes, responds to the pineal and gastrointestinal hormone melatonin by an increase in swarming activity. This swarming behavior is expressed rhythmically, with a period of approximately 24 hrs. Transformation of E. aerogenes to exp

Characterization of ertapenem-resistant Enterobacter cloacae in a Taiwanese university hospital.

The emergence of carbapenem resistance in Enterobacteriaceae has become a great concern. The aim of this study was to characterize ertapenem-resistant Enterobacter cloacae isolates from a Taiwanese university hospital. A total of 355 nonduplicated E. cloacae isolates collected in 2007 were analyzed by antimicrobial susceptibility testing with and without an inhibitor of efflux pumps and AmpC β-lactamase. The phenotype of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL), profile of outer membrane proteins (OMPs), and clonal relatedness were investigated by the double-disk synergy test, urea/SDS-PAGE, and p

Group IIC intron with an unusual target of integration in Enterobacter cloacae.

A potential role of group IIC-attC introns in integron gene cassette formation, that is, the way in which they could provide the attC sequence essential for recombination, has been proposed. Group IIC introns usually target the attC site of gene cassettes and more specifically their inverse core. Here we characterized a novel group IIC intron targeting the core site of the aadA1 gene cassette attC site (aadA1-qacEΔ1 gene cassette junction) from enterobacterial isolates. Intron mobility (retrohoming) was analyzed using a two-plasmid assay performed in Escherichia coli. Intron mobility assays co
