Comparative genomic characterization and antimicrobial resistance of bacteremia-causing Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis in a Chinese hospital.

Enterococci are common commensals of the human gut and important opportunistic pathogens, with Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis being the most clinically prevalent species. A significant epidemiological shift has emerged with an increasing clinical burden of E. faecium. To compare genomic evolution of E. faecium and E. faecalis, we performed whole-genome sequencing on 93 E. faecium and 32 E. faecalis isolates causing bloodstream infections at a single hospital (2022-2024). Analysis of patient demographics revealed that E. faecium infections originated from fewer sources than E. f

Drug Repurposing: In vitro and in vivo Antimicrobial and Antibiofilm Effects of Bithionol Against Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium.

Widespread antibiotic resistance has been reported in enterococcal pathogens that cause life-threatening infections. Enterococci species rapidly acquire resistance and the pace of new antibiotic development is slow. Drug repurposing is a promising approach in solving this problem. Bithionol (BT) is a clinically approved anthelminthic drug. In this study, we found that BT showed significant antimicrobial and antibiofilm effects against Enterococcus faecalis and vancomycin-resistant Entercococcus faecium in vitro, in a dose-dependent manner, by disrupting the integrity of the bacterial cell memb

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with vancomycin-susceptible Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium bacteraemia in cancer patients.

The purpose of this investigation was to compare the risk factors, clinical features and outcomes in cancer patients with bacteraemia caused by vancomycin-susceptible Enterococcus faecalis and E. faecium. A retrospective, observational 7-year study was carried out in a 450-bed, acute-care university-affiliated hospital. We performed univariate comparisons between the two groups and then multivariate analysis to identify patient risk factors for E. faecium isolation. Seventy-three patients were included in the analysis: 54 (74.0%) with bacteraemia caused by E. faecalis and 19 (26.0%) by E. faec

Status of high level aminoglycoside resistant Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis in a rural hospital of central India.

Considering the emergence of high level aminoglycoside resistance (HLAR) in enterococci this study was undertaken to determine their status in a rural setting. HLAR by disc diffusion and agar dilution, beta lactamase by nitrocefin disc and vancomycin resistance by agar dilution was determined in 150 enterococcal isolates, as per NCCLS guidelines. Only two species, Enterococcus faecalis (85.5%) and Enterococcus faecium (14.7%) were recovered, mostly from blood. Forty six percent showed HLAR. Multi drug resistance and concomitant resistance of HLAR strains to beta lactams were quite high. None s

Analysis of the prevalence of tetracycline resistance genes in clinical isolates of Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium in a Japanese hospital.

Prevalence of seven tetracycline resistance (TC(R)) genes--tet(L), tet(M), tet(K), tet(O), tet(S), tet(T), and tet(U)--which are known to be distributed to gram-positive cocci was analyzed for 224 Enterococcus faecalis and 46 Enterococcus faecium clinical isolates obtained in a Japanese hospital. Any of the TC(R) genes was detected in 75.9% of all the enterococcal strains. The tet(M) was detected at highest rates in both E. faecalis (75.0%) and E. faecium (69.6%), followed by tet(L), which was harbored in 6.7% of E. faecalis isolates and 30.4% of E. faecium isolates. The tet(O), tet(S), and te

Vancomycin Resistance in Enterococcus and Staphylococcus aureus.

Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus faecium and Staphylococcus aureus are both common commensals and major opportunistic human pathogens. In recent decades, these bacteria have acquired broad resistance to several major classes of antibiotics, including commonly employed glycopeptides. Exemplified by resistance to vancomycin, glycopeptide resistance is mediated through intrinsic gene mutations, and/or transferrable van resistance gene cassette-carrying mobile genetic elements. Here, this review will discuss the epidemiology of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus and S. aureus in healthcare, comm

A case of endogenous Enterococcus faecalis endophthalmitis.

A case of successful treatment by vitrectomy and lensectomy of early-stage endogenous endophthalmitis caused by Enterococcus faecalis was reported. The case was a 50-year-old man with poorly controlled diabetes. Following T-tube drainage for a necrotic cholecystitis operation, he developed iridocyclitis in both eyes as well as fever. At the time of his first visit to our clinic, his right eye had already lost light perception. His left eye had visual acuity recognizing hand movement, marked uveitis, complicated cataract, and dense vitreous opacity. As gram-positive cocci were isolated from the

The enterococcus: "putting the bug in our ears".

High-level resistance to gentamicin among clinical isolates of enterococci has been found with increasing frequency in recent years. In this issue, Zervos and colleagues report findings from a prospective study in which they assessed the frequency of colonization and infection with such organisms at a university medical center, demonstrating probable person-to-person spread. Their findings suggest that hospitals should conduct systematic screening for enterococci with high-level resistance to gentamicin, that antimicrobial treatment habits be modified to limit the emergence of such organisms,

Modulation of experimental colitis by Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus faecium, and Bacillus subtilis: insights from infectious and chemical models.

The roles of Enterococcus faecium (E. faecium), Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis), and Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) in colitis remain poorly defined, with existing literature presenting inconsistent and often contradictory evidence. This study aimed to elucidate their contributions to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) using both infectious (non-typhoidal Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, S. typhimurium) and chemical (dextran sulfate sodium, DSS)-induced colitis models. Colitis was induced in C57BL/6 mice via a single oral dose of S. typhimurium (ATCC14028) and/or administration of D

Review of Enterococcus faecalis Infections of Poultry.

Enterococcus faecalis organisms are Gram-positive cocci that are ubiquitous in the environment, occurring in water and soil, and are commensal inhabitants of the intestinal tracts of both vertebrate and invertebrate animals. They are considered opportunists and possess many virulence-encoding traits, including the formation of biofilms and toxins. Enterococcus faecalis produces cytolysin, which is a unique toxin having activity against both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. Cytolysin causes hemolysis of red blood cells and has also been termed hemolysin. Enterococcus faecalis organisms are int

The Enterococcus: a Model of Adaptability to Its Environment.

The genus Enterococcus comprises a ubiquitous group of Gram-positive bacteria that are of great relevance to human health for their role as major causative agents of health care-associated infections. The enterococci are resilient and versatile species able to survive under harsh conditions, making them well adapted to the health care environment. Two species cause the majority of enterococcal infections: Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium Both species demonstrate intrinsic resistance to common antibiotics, such as virtually all cephalosporins, aminoglycosides, clindamycin, and tri

Enterococcus cecorum infection in a racing pigeon.

Until now, Enterococcus cecorum (EC) has been known as a pathogen for broilers, broiler breeders, and Pekin ducks. In the present report, we describe a fatal systemic EC infection in a young racing pigeon (Columba livia forma domestica). EC was isolated from the heart, liver, spleen, and intestine of the bird in pure culture. In the pathologic examination, the pigeon showed enteritis and an ulcerative gastritis, which may have been predisposing factors for the development of the generalized EC infection. An accumulation of gram-positive cocci in spleen tissue was found in the histopathologic e
