Limited recent molecular epidemiology data are available for pediatric Central Nervous System (CNS) infections in Europe. The aim of this study was to investigate the molecular epidemiology of enterovirus (EV) involved in CNS infections in children. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from children (0-16 years) with suspected meningitis-encephalitis (ME) who were hospitalized in the largest pediatric hospital of Greece from October 2017 to September 2020 was initially tested for 14 common pathogens using the multiplex PCR FilmArray® ME Panel (FA-ME). CSF samples positive for EV, as well as pharyngeal sw

Enteroviruses are RNA viruses that are responsible for both mild gastroenteritis and mild respiratory illnesses as well as debilitating diseases such as meningitis and myocarditis. The disease burden of enteroviruses in the United States is difficult to assess because most infections are not recorded. Since infected individuals shed enterovirus in feces and urine, surveillance of municipal wastewater can reveal the diversity of enteroviruses circulating in human populations. Therefore, monthly municipal wastewater samples were collected for 1 year and enteroviruses were quantified by reverse t

A survey of human enterovirus (HEV) infections from 2004 to 2008 was conducted in Yokohama City, Japan. A total of 260 clinical samples in 247 patients were shown to be positive for enterovirus. Among them, 25 serotypes were identified, including 3 serotypes of poliovirus (19 samples). The prevalence rates of hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD), herpangina, and respiratory illness associated with nonpolio HEV infections were also analyzed. Seven serotypes were highly associated with HFMD or herpangina. These 7 virus serotypes were prevalent during summer and autumn with a peak in July, and were

We conducted a retrospective, population-based laboratory surveillance study during May 2023-December 2025 in Alberta, Canada, to characterize adult invasive enterovirus and parechovirus infections and to identify groups at high risk for those infections. Of 15,621 samples tested, 162 (1.0%) were virus positive, of which 51 (31.5%) samples from 39 patients indicated invasive infections. Cerebrospinal fluid, blood, and cardiac tissue were the most frequent virus-positive specimens. The invasive enterovirus and parechovirus incidence rate was 0.37 cases/100,000 person-years; rates were higher in

Enteroviruses (EVs) and parechoviruses (PeVs) are common pathogens of childhood. Enteroviral infections cause a range of clinical syndromes from mild illness to neurologic manifestations of meningitis, encephalitis, and acute flaccid myelitis. Disease manifestations are driven by a combination of viral replication and host immune response. Despite ubiquitousness and clinical importance, there are no approved targeted therapies for these viruses and most are without an available vaccine. Studies of EV neuropathogenesis began with poliovirus and are ongoing for other nonpolio EVs and PeVs. Many

Enteroviruses (e.g., poliovirus, enterovirus-A71, coxsackievirus, enterovirus-D68, rhinovirus) include many human pathogens causative of various mild and more severe diseases, especially in young children. Unfortunately, antiviral drugs to treat enterovirus infections have not been approved yet. Over the past decades, several direct-acting inhibitors have been developed, including capsid binders, which block virus entry, and inhibitors of viral enzymes required for genome replication. Capsid binders and protease inhibitors have been clinically evaluated, but failed due to limited efficacy or t

BACKGROUND: Enteroviral infections have long been suspected in having a role in β cell destruction and therefore leading to the onset of clinical type 1 diabetes (T1D). The frequency of enterovirus (EV)-related T1D in North Africa is still unknown. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between infection with EV and T1D in Tunisia.
METHODS: A total of 95 T1D patients (41 children and 54 adults) and 141 healthy control subjects (57 children and 84 adults) were tested for the presence of EV-RNA by a highly sensitive nested reverse transcription-polymerase chain reactio

INTRODUCTION: Human parechoviruses (HPeVs) have recently been added to the family Picornaviridae, where Enteroviruses (HEV) belong. The specific characteristics of HPeV infection in the neonate are not clear, and their involvement in neonatal infection is believed to be largely underestimated. HPeV type 3 has been recently linked to sepsis-like illness and neurological involvement in the newborn.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the involvement of HPeV in central nervous system (CNS) infections throughout the neonatal period in term newborns, describe their clinical, analytical and cerebrospinal fluid (C

Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is a member of Picornaviridae that causes mild and self-limiting hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). However, EV71 infections can progress to polio-like paralysis, neurogenic pulmonary edema, and fatal encephalitis in infants and young children. Large EV71 outbreaks have been reported in Taiwan, China, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and Australia. This virus is considered a critical emerging public health threat. EV71 is an important crucial neurotropic enterovirus for which there is currently no effective antiviral drug or vaccine. The mechanism by which EV71 causes sever

Enterovirus 68 strains were detected in 14 specimens from children with respiratory tract infections and 1 specimen from a child with febrile convulsions during 2010 in Osaka, Japan. These strains had deletions in the 5' untranslated region and were genetically different from reported strains. This virus is associated with respiratory tract infections in Japan.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of an enterovirus infection may be achieved through direct virus detection from fecal or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples by virus isolation or PCR. Serologically, a significant rise in antibody titer may be detected and different enteroviral types can be differentiated using the neutralization assay.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We investigated the contribution of these different laboratory parameters to the diagnosis of enterovirus infections occurring in the Frankfurt am Main area during the years 1997 to 1999, including an echovirus 30 outbreak in a group of children w

Despite extensive investigations over the last decades, several aspects of the pathogenesis of enterovirus infections in humans and animals are only poorly understood, such as the molecular basis of virulence (in particular of neurovirulence), tissue tropisms (e.g. the precise site of initial virus replication in the human intestinal tract), and precipitating factors of paralytic disease ("disposition"). Studies on poliovirus myocarditis in man are reviewed. Unequivocal evidence on replication of poliovirus type 2 (strains MEF1 and Lansing) in newborn and suckling mice and on poliovirus myocar

Mutants of enterovirus type 71 with respect to plaque size were selected from two American and two Japanese strains, and the antigenic relationship between the mutants was analyzed using immune animal and patients' sera. All four strains were mixtures of m+ (big) and m (minute) plaque mutants that were serologically different from each other. Thus, it appears that selected m+ and m mutants must be used for identification and antigenic analysis of isolates of enterovirus type 71. In patients with hand, foot, and mouth disease, the antibody responses to the m mutants of all four strains were sig

BACKGROUND: Enterovirus is a common pediatric infectious disease, but the epidemiological data in young infants were lacking. This study aims to evaluate the role of enterovirus in febrile young infants and identify risk factors for severe infections.
METHODS: We enrolled febrile infants younger than 90 days admitted to National Taiwan University Hospital from January 2010 to June 2021. Enterovirus infection was confirmed via viral isolation or pan-enterovirus PCR. Central nervous system involvement was defined by positive culture or PCR in cerebrospinal fluid. Severe complications included s

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) are increasingly common, especially in populations with higher life expectancies. They are associated mainly with protein metabolism and structure changes, leading to neuronal cell death. Viral infections affect these cellular processes and may be involved in the etiology of several neurological illnesses, particularly NDs. Enteroviruses (EVs) frequently infect the central nervous system (CNS), causing neurological disease. Inflammation, disruption of the host autophagy machinery, and deregulation and accumulation/misfolding of proteins are the main alterations

Enteroviruses (EVs) are classified into 15 species according to their sequence diversity. They include four human EV (A, B, C, and D) and three rhinoviruses (A, B, and C), and cause diseases in millions of people worldwide. Generally, individuals with enteroviral infections have mild clinical symptoms, including respiratory illness, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, and fever. More importantly, some members of the human EV family are neurotropic pathogens that may cause a wide range of clinical diseases, such as aseptic meningitis and encephalitis. Previously, the EV that caused the most severe n
