Chronic rhinocerebral mucormycosis.

Rhinocerebral mucormycosis is a well-described fulminant fungal infection that typically presents acutely in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis or immunosuppression. Chronic presentations of rhinocerebral mucormycosis have also been described. In the chronic infection, the disease course is indolent and slowly progressive, often occurring over weeks to months. The authors report 2 cases of chronic rhinocerebral mucormycosis (CRM) treated at their institution and review 16 other cases reported in the English-language literature. In these cases, the median time from symptom onset to diagnosis w

Transmission of Pandora neoaphidis in the presence of co-occurring arthropods.

Transmission of the entomopathogenic fungus Pandora neoaphidis to the nettle aphid Microlophium carnosum was assessed in the presence of arthropods that co-exist with the fungus within the habitat but do not compete for aphid hosts. The presence of a parasitoid significantly enhanced transmission, and transmission rates were similar for both enemy and non-enemy parasitoids. Although herbivory of nettle leaves by Peacock butterfly (Inchis io) caterpillars indirectly reduced the number of M. carnosum by >30% due to a reduction in leaf area for feeding, the addition of I. io significantly increas

A fatal pseudo-tumour: disseminated basidiobolomycosis.

BACKGROUND: Basidiobolomycosis is a rare disease caused by the fungus Basidiobolus ranarum, member of the class Zygomycetes, order Entomophthorales, found worldwide. Usually basidiobolomycosis is a subcutaneous infection but rarely gastrointestinal manifestations have been described; 13 adults and 10 children and a few retroperitoneal or pulmonary cases. In gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis the colon is most frequently involved, usually presenting with subacute mild abdominal pain. In contrast to children only very few described adult patients had hepatic masses. Definitive diagnosis require

Case report of subcutaneous entomophthoromycosis with retroperitoneal invasion.

The authors describe a case of entomophthoromycosis in a previously healthy patient, who presented with an abscess in the right buttock. After surgical drainage it evolved into a retroperitoneal tumor. The patient improved clinically after resection of the mass and ketoconazole treatment. The histopathological analysis showed the Splendore-Hoeppli phenomenon, suggesting Basidiobolus ranarum infection, a zygomycosis generally restricted to the subcutaneous tissue, with rare gastrointestinal involvement.

Mortality of captive Canadian toads from Basidiobolus ranarum mycotic dermatitis.

Twenty-six adult free-ranging Canadian toads (Bufo hemiophrys) were collected from northeastern North Dakota (USA) during the last week of August 1994 and placed in captivity. During late December and January 1995, 21 Canadian toads died. Clinical signs included increased time sitting in water bowls, darkened dorsal skin, constant arching of their backs, and hyperemia and sloughing of ventral epidermis. The condition progressively worsened until death occurred within 5 to 7 days after onset of clinical disease. Mycotic dermatitis due to Basidiobolus ranarum was diagnosed in all toads and the f

[Conidiobolomycosis: a case report with histophathologic findings].

Conidiobolomycosis is a subcutaneous mycosis of the facial midline affecting primarily adult males. It is caused by the saprophytic fungus, Conodiobolus coronatus, present in soils and dried vegetables, characteristic of intertropical regions. C. coronatus belongs to the class Zygomycetes, order Entomophthorales; it is a fungus composed of thick, short hyphae that grows at temperatures between 30 degrees C and 37 degrees C and causes nasal granulomas. The histologic findings are described of a case of conidiobolomycosis in a 31-year-old male, born and resident in the Urabá region of Colombia.

Gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis in children: an overlooked emerging infection?

Basidiobolus ranarum is a known cause of chronic subcutaneous zygomycosis. During the past decade, many cases have been reported with extracutaneous basidiobolomycosis. We aimed to review the medical literature on gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis (GIB) as an emerging fungal infection causing a serious, and occasionally fatal, paediatric disease. We reviewed all reported cases of visceral basidiobolomycosis with special focus on the gastrointestinal involvement in children. Twenty-six cases of GIB have been reported worldwide, in 14 adults and 12 children. All cases presented with fever, abd

Mass harvesting of the entomopathogenic fungus, Neozygites fresenii, from natural field epizootics in the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii.

Epizootics caused by insect pathogens sometimes occur over wide areas and result in millions of infected insects. Naturally infected insects can be considered a natural resource for harvesting insect pathogens. We developed methods to mass harvest the fungal pathogen Neozygites fresenii (Entomophthorales: Neozygitaceae) from epizootics in Aphis gossypii (Homoptera: Aphididae) in a commercial cotton field in Arkansas. A total of 30,722 aphids infected with N. fresenii in the mature hyphal body or early conidiophore stages were harvested, dried, and frozen. Three desiccants were compared: silica

Basidiobolomycosis of the nose and face: a case report and a mini-review of unusual cases of basidiobolomycosis.

BACKGROUND: Subcutaneous zygomycosis is a chronic infection caused by fungus of the order Entomophthorales. It can have varying presentations and presents in the nose and face area with gradually progressing subcutaneous swelling that may be difficult to diagnose unless a strong suspicion of fungal involvement is maintained. We present a case of subcutaneous zygomycosis in a 35-year-old male patient, resident of a North Indian state. The patient was diagnosed to be suffering from subcutaneous zygomycosis, the causative agent being Basidiobolus ranarum identified on culture and lactophenol cott

Colonic basidiobolomycosis in a child: report of a culture-proven case.

Basidiobolomycosis is a rare fungal disease caused by Basidiobolus ranarum, which is endemic in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis poses diagnostic difficulties due to the non-specific clinical presentation and absence of predisposing factors. Eight pediatric cases of the disease have been reported recently from Iran, but none of these, or most of the other cases reported in the literature, has been proven by culture, which is the gold standard method for diagnosis. We present a case of culture-proven colonic basidiobolomyco

Gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis: mimicking Crohns disease case report and review of the literature.

Gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis (GIB) is an unusual fungal infection that manifests in the skin and rarely involves other systems. All of the few cases of GIB reported so far were diagnosed with difficulty, necessitating laparotomy and resection of the inflamed part of the bowel. We report a child with GIB who was successfully diagnosed endoscopically without surgical intervention.

Successful treatment of extensive basidiobolomycosis with oral itraconazole in a child.

BACKGROUND: Basidiobolomycosis is a rare chronic subcutaneous infection caused by Basidiobolus ranarum, which is usually treated with potassium iodide. Extensive deforming lesions in children can occur owing to lack of early diagnosis and/or inappropriate treatment. CASE REPORT: An 8-year-old girl child presented to us with extensive deforming plaque-like lesions over the left thigh and leg with multiple ulcerations of 1 year's duration. Histopathology was suggestive of subcutaneous zygomycosis with Splendore Hoeppli phenomenon. Microscopic examination of the tissue showed branching, sparsely

Detection of villous conidia of Conidiobolus coronatus in a blood sample by scanning electron microscopy investigation.

Conidiobolus coronatus is a major insect pathogen belonging to the fungal order Entomophthorales, causing a rare subcutaneous infection of the nasofacial region, resulting in swelling of predominantly the nose, mouth, and perinasal tissue. Later in the course of the infection firm, painless, subcutaneous nodules develop that are attached to the underlying tissues but not to the skin. No morphological studies are available in the literature on the morphology of C. coronatus in vivo and all morphological studies have been conducted on in vitro cultures. Here the authors report on the ultrastruct

Invasive Basidiobolomycosis Presenting as Retroperitoneal Fibrosis: A Case Report.

Basidiobolomycosis is an uncommon emerging fungal infection caused by Basidiobolus ranarum. It frequently causes cutaneous infection, but it rarely infects visceral tissues in humans. Here, a 39-year-old previously healthy woman presented with severe left-sided abdominal pain and weight loss. She had visited several hospitals and had provisionally been diagnosed as having either a retroperitoneal malignancy or retroperitoneal fibrosis before being referred to our hospital. Abdominal computerized tomography and biopsy of the retroperitoneal mass revealed retroperitoneal basidiobolomycosis infec

Gastrointestinal pythiosis with concurrent presumptive gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis in a Boxer dog.

A 2-year-old female spayed Boxer dog was presented for a 1-month history of progressive hemorrhagic diarrhea with tenesmus and weight loss despite trial courses of antibiotics and diet change. Abdominal ultrasound revealed severe, focal thickening, and loss of normal architecture of the colonic wall with abdominal lymphadenomegaly. Dry-mount fecal cytology, performed on several consecutive days, consistently revealed numerous, round, 16-20 μm structures with basophilic, granular content, and a thin cell wall. Transmission electron microscopy identified these structures as fungi. Culture, polym

Mechanical Vectors Enhance Fungal Entomopathogen Reduction of the Grasshopper Pest Camnula pellucida (Orthoptera: Acrididae).

Mounting scientific evidence indicates that pathogens can regulate insect populations. However, limited dispersal and sensitivity to abiotic conditions often restricts pathogen regulation of host populations. While it is well established that arthropod biological vectors increase pathogen incidence in host populations, few studies have examined whether arthropod mechanical vectors (an organism that transmits pathogens but is not essential to the life cycle of the pathogen) influence host-pathogen dynamics. The importance of mechanical dispersal by ant scavengers, Formica fusca (L.), in a grass

A PCR-based method to identify Entomophaga spp. infections in North American grasshoppers.

A PCR-based method was developed for the detection and identification of two species of grasshopper-specific pathogens belonging to the genus Entomophaga in North America, Entomophaga calopteni and Entomophaga macleodii. Two separate sets of primers specific for amplification of a DNA product from each species of Entomophaga as well as a positive control were utilized. Grasshoppers were collected from two sites in Mexico during an epizootic with grasshoppers found in "summit disease", typical of Entomophaga infections. There was a preponderance of Melanopline grasshoppers infected by E. calopt
