Design of a Location-Based Case-Control Study of Built Environment Risk Factors for Pedestrian Fatalities in the U.S.

The location-based case-control design is a useful approach for studies where the exposures of interest are aspects of the environment around the location of a health event such as a pedestrian fatality. In this design locations are the unit of analysis and an enumerated cohort of locations are followed through time for the health events of interest and a case-control study of locations is nested within the cohort. Locations where events occurred (case-locations) are compared to matched locations where these events did not occur (control-locations). We describe the application of this design t

Study design options in evaluating gene-environment interactions: practical considerations for a planned case-control study of pediatric leukemia.

BACKGROUND: We compare methodological approaches for evaluating gene-environment interaction using a planned study of pediatric leukemia as a practical example. We considered three design options: a full case-control study (Option I), a case-only study (Option II), and a partial case-control study (Option III), in which information on controls is limited to environmental exposure only. PROCEDURE: For each design option we determined its ability to measure the main effects of environmental factor E and genetic factor G, and the interaction between E and G. Using the leukemia study example, we

Empowering a Universal Design Course for the Built Environment: Exploring Learning Experiences Through an Interdisciplinary, Multicultural and Civic Approach.

Promoting inclusion and diversity is essential for creating an inclusive built environment. Next to building knowledge and understanding on the topic, it is also crucial to foster inclusive attitudes and awareness for both personal and professional growth. In developing a new architectural course 'Designing with People', our goal was to elevate knowledge and understanding of an inclusive built environment as well as to create more awareness on inclusion and diversity, guided by the Universal Design paradigm. To achieve this, the authors established a civic approach and facilitated interdiscipl

The Association Between Genetic Predisposition and Parental Socialization: An Examination of Gene-Environment Correlations Using an Adoption-Based Design.

An extensive body of research has examined the role that genetic influences play in the development of antisocial behavior. Even so, there remains much that is unknown regarding the intersections among antisocial behavior, environments, and genetic influences. The current study is designed to shed some light on this issue by examining whether gene-environment correlations are present in the lives of adopted adolescents. More specifically, this article seeks to contribute to scholarship efforts aimed at understanding whether biological parents' antisocial behavioral phenotypes-behaviors often a

Methods and Software to Analyze Gene-Environment Interactions under a Case-Mother-Control-Mother Design with Partially Missing Child Genotype.

INTRODUCTION: The case-mother-control-mother design allows to study fetal and maternal genetic factors together with environmental exposures on early life outcomes. Mendelian constraints and conditional independence between child genotype and environmental factors enabled semiparametric likelihood methods to estimate logistic models with greater efficiency than standard logistic regression. Difficulties in child genotype collection require methods handling missing child genotype. METHODS: We review a stratified retrospective likelihood and two semiparametric likelihood approaches: a prospecti

The Built Environment and Reservoirs of Antimicrobial Resistance: Are Mitigation and Prevention Possible Using Design and Daily Facility Operations Strategies?

Antimicrobial resistance is a global concern, and the built environment needed for direct care of patients and residents and associated delivery of support services can be a significant reservoir of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). The World Health Organization's latest report on antimicrobial resistance finds "…one in six laboratory-confirmed bacterial infections in people worldwide in 2023 were resistant to antibiotics, and between 2018 and 2023, antibiotic resistance rose over 40%." This review will reflect growing awareness of the role the built environment plays in cross-transmissio

Computation-aided hapten design for highly specific monoclonal antibody and one-step immunochromatographic assay of indomethacin in food and environment.

Indomethacin (IDM) poses significant safety concerns due to its illegal addition to food and notable environmental persistence. Consequently, there is an urgent need to establish efficient and rapid detection methods applicable to both food and environmental samples. In this study, guided by the analysis and prediction of IDM's characteristic functional groups, a highly specific monoclonal antibody against IDM was generated, showing an IC50 value of 0.68 ng/mL and cross-reactivity rates below 1.30 % with structural analogues. The recognition mechanism of IDM was further elucidated using homolo

Designing for Dementia: A Multiple Case Study Approach to Explore How Care Home Environments May Influence Wandering.

Up to 60% of people living with dementia 'wander' in care homes. Previously perceived negatively, wandering is increasingly recognised as a meaningful activity, driven by enjoyment, routine, and social connection. Care home environments can support or hinder wandering and orientation, influencing autonomy and wellbeing. This study aimed to describe environmental features that can influence orientation and wandering within care homes. This study developed and employed an evidence-based environmental mapping tool within care homes, recruited to ensure representativeness across ownership, funding

Achieving near-zero particle generation by simplicity of design-A compliant-mechanism-based gripper for clean-room environments.

Lab Automation facilitates high-throughput processes and improves reproducibility and efficiency while removing human action, primary source of contaminating particles. Handling poses a risk of contamination due to close contact with the objects. We propose a novel gripper (CrocoGrip) relying on compliant mechanisms to reduce the amount of contaminating particles generated by the gripper rather than preventing their emission, the latter being the common approach in current grippers. Our novel gripper is actuated by linear solenoids and purely relies on deformation for its motion. As a result,

Evaluation of gene-environment interactions for colorectal cancer susceptibility loci using case-only and case-control designs.

BACKGROUND: Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified more than 40 colorectal cancer susceptibility loci, but only a small fraction of heritability was explained. To account for missing heritability, we investigated gene-environment interactions (G × Es) between GWAS-identified single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and established risk or protective factors for colorectal cancer using both case-only and case-control study designs. METHODS: Data on 703 colorectal cancer cases and 1406 healthy controls from the National Cancer Center in Korea were used. We tested interactions betw

Targeted anthocyanin biofortification in black rice: a review of spatial metabolic control, growth-defence trade-offs and genotype-environment-management design.

Black rice is a nutrient-dense whole grain in which anthocyanins accumulate predominantly in the outer caryopsis layers, but stronger pigmentation may impose carbon, energy and precursor demands that compromise yield, stress resilience and grain quality. This review synthesizes molecular and physiological controls of rice anthocyanin accumulation. It systematically evaluates whether relationships among anthocyanin content, grain yield, and eating, processing and nutritional quality are synergistic, antagonistic or unresolved. We present a targeted rather than constitutive biofortification fram

Environment-friendly organic coordination design of Z-scheme heterojunction N-BOB/BiOIO3 for efficient LED-light-driven photocatalytic and electrochemical performance.

As the climate seriously changes, ecofriendly nanomaterials have attracted tremendous interest in renewable energy as photocatalysis. Herein, we designed a new green bismuth-based Z-scheme Bi2O22+ slabs coordinate with 2-aminoterephthalic acid (N-BOB)/BiOIO3 through a simple anion exchange and postsynthetic hydrothermal reaction. FTIR, XRD, FESEM and TEM were employed to characterize the functional groups, structure, and morphologies. UV-DRS revealed the difference in band energy of the N-BOB and N-BOB/BiOIO3. Toward Rh B, TC and CIP degradation tests, 1-N-BOB/BiOIO3 manifests the best photoca

The role of the early social environment on Epstein Barr virus infection: a prospective observational design using the Millennium Cohort Study.

UNLABELLED: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a highly prevalent herpesvirus linked to infectious mononucleosis and several malignancies. This paper aims to study the association between children's early life social environment at 9 months and EBV infection at 3 years of age. METHODS: We used data on children included in the UK Millennium Cohort Study. We described the social environment using area-level and material factors as well as socioeconomic position (SEP) at 9 months. EBV was measured at 3 years of age (n = 12 457). RESULTS: Lower rates of EBV infection were observed in children living in

Three-Dimensional Skin Deformation as Force Substitution: Wearable Device Design and Performance During Haptic Exploration of Virtual Environments.

Virtual reality systems would benefit from a compelling force sensory substitute when workspace or stability limitations prevent the use of kinesthetic force feedback systems. We present a wearable fingertip haptic device with the ability to make and break contact in addition to rendering both shear and normal skin deformation to the fingerpad. A delta mechanism with novel bias spring and tether actuator relocation method enables the use of high-end motors and encoders, allowing precise device control: 10 Hz bandwidth and 0.255 mm RMS tracking error were achieved during testing. Unveiling the contextual nonstationary effects of the built environment on individual air pollution exposure: a mobile sensor big data driven research design.

While existing studies have extensively examined the relationship between the built environment and air pollution using monitoring station data, few have considered individual-level exposure. This study addresses that gap by adopting a real-time exposure tracking research design that integrates mobile air quality sensing and GPS tracking. Using 1.40 million mobile sensor observations, we developed an interpretable multiple XGBoost machine learning framework with SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis to investigate the nonstationary effects of built environment factors on individual-lev

Home environment design theories and models related to the occupational performance, participation and well-being of people with intellectual disabilities: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Access to housing for people with intellectual disabilities is often constrained by lack of choice, control and can often be inappropriate or unsafe. To enable people to remain at home and participate in their occupations, a collation and review of theories and models supporting good home environment design offers a view from which practice could be advanced. METHOD: A scoping review was used to map the literature on theories and models on home environmental designing, which can have influence on the occupational performance and participation of people with intellectual disabiliti

No Evidence for Passive Gene-Environment Correlation or the Influence of Genetic Risk for Psychiatric Disorders on Adult Body Composition via the Adoption Design.

The relationship between genetic and environmental risk is complex and for many traits, estimates of genetic effects may be inflated by passive gene-environment correlation. This arises because biological offspring inherit both their genotypes and rearing environment from their parents. We tested for passive gene-environment correlation in adult body composition traits using the 'natural experiment' of childhood adoption, which removes passive gene-environment correlation within families. Specifically, we compared 6165 adoptees with propensity score matched non-adoptees in the UK Biobank. We a

Hearing Faculty Perceptions of the Application of Universal Design for Learning Principles in Higher Education Learning Environments for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students.

This study explored hearing faculty members' perceptions and practices regarding implementing universal design for learning (UDL) principles when teaching deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students in higher education and identified the barriers that hinder their application. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed. Data were collected through semistructured individual interviews with 10 hearing faculty members at a university in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The findings indicated that most participants agreed that UDL serves as a pedagogical framework designed to customize instructi

Healthy Dwelling: Design of Biophilic Interior Environments Fostering Self-Care Practices for People Living with Migraines, Chronic Pain, and Depression.

The benefits of biophilic interior design have been recognized by healthcare facilities, but residential environments receive relatively less attention with respect to improving the health of people living with chronic diseases. Recent "stay-at-home" restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic further emphasized the importance of creating interior spaces that directly and indirectly support physical and mental health. In this viewpoint article, we discuss opportunities for combining biophilic interventions with interior design, fostering disease-specific self-care. We provide examples of designi
