Health risk assessment of environmental exposure to trichloroethylene.

A review of the animal data showed trichloroethylene (TRI) to be of low acute toxicity. Repeated exposure showed that the target organs were the liver, and to a lesser extent, the kidney. TRI is not mutagenic or only marginally mutagenic. There is no evidence of fetotoxicity or teratogenicity. TRI is judged not to exhibit chronic neurotoxicity. Lifetime bioassays resulted in tumors in both the mouse and the rat. However, because of qualitative and quantitative metabolic differences between rodent and human, no one suitable tumor site can be chosen for human health risk assessment. In addition,

Socioeconomic status and exposure to multiple environmental pollutants during pregnancy: evidence for environmental inequity?

BACKGROUND: Inequities in the distribution of environmental exposures may add an extra burden to socially disadvantaged populations, especially when acting during vulnerable periods such as pregnancy and early life, but such inequities may be more complex and uncertain than is generally assumed. We therefore examine whether socioeconomic inequities exist in pregnancy exposures to multiple common environmental contaminants in air, water and food. METHODS: A Spanish population-based birth cohort study enrolled over 2000 pregnant women between 2004 and 2008. Questionnaires assessed parental educ

Occupational and Environmental Cholangiocarcinoma-Related Toxic Exposures.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a malignancy that originates from the epithelial cells of the biliary system. Despite advancements in medical diagnostic techniques, CCAs remain a challenge to detect due to their silent clinical progression, making it difficult to diagnose these diseases. There are several well-established risk factors for CCA, including biliary tract infection and inflammation. However, there is also growing evidence that community and occupational exposures play a significant role in the development of bile duct cancers. This review examines the geographical distribution of these

Environmental and occupational exposures associated with male infertility.

The upsurge in male infertility over the last two decades, possibly due to environmental exposure, has raised significant interest, particularly boosted by reports from fertility clinics, which showed that chronic diseases and hereditary or other medical conditions might only partially explain current incidence of male infertility. Both environmental and occupational settings may have a significant role in exposure to complex mixtures of endocrine disruptors (ED), which play a major role in fertility disorders. The aim of this review is to give an insight into the current knowledge on exposure

Chronotype and environmental light exposure in a student population.

In humans and most other species, changes in the intensity and duration of light provide a critical set of signals for the synchronisation of the circadian system to the astronomical day. The timing of activity within the 24 h day defines an individual's chronotype, i.e. morning, intermediate or evening type. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between environmental light exposure, due to geographical location, on the chronotype of university students. Over 6 000 university students from cities in the Northern Hemisphere (Oxford, Munich and Groningen) and Southern Hemisph

Environmental exposures and the development of systemic lupus erythematosus.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review examines evidence relating environmental factors to the development of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). RECENT FINDINGS: The strongest epidemiologic evidence exists for the associations of silica, cigarette smoking, oral contraceptives, postmenopausal hormone therapy and endometriosis, with SLE incidence. Recent studies have also provided robust evidence of the association between alcohol consumption and decreased SLE risk. There are preliminary, conflicting or unsubstantiated data that other factors, including air pollution, ultraviolet light, infections, va

Developmental origins of health and disease: environmental exposures.

The developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) approach has evolved over the past 20 years, and the current hypothesis proposes that fetal adaptations to intrauterine and maternal conditions during development shape structure and function of organs. Here we present a review of some environmental exposures that may trigger fetal maladaptations in these processes, including three examples: exposures to tobacco smoke, antidepressant medication, and folic acid deficits in the food supply. We provide a selected review of current research on the effects of each of these exposures on fetal d

[Occupational and environmental exposures and relations with pulmonary health].

The effects of living conditions and occupational and environmental exposures on pulmonary health are well known. Turkey, as a developing country, has a high risk of occupational and environmental exposure, and knowledge on the issue is limited. To prove the general living conditions of the inpatients in our clinic, and to study relation of pulmonary diseases with respiratory exposures. Detailed history of occupational and environmental exposure of the subjects who were followed as inpatients has been examined, and the relation with their diseases has been evaluated. Environmental exposure and cancer prevention in the Czech Republic.

Cancer risk is predominantly shaped by environmental exposures interacting with genetic susceptibility, yet modifiable non-genetic determinants remain insufficiently characterised. The human exposome framework promotes a comprehensive, life-course approach to studying chemical, biological, and physical exposures alongside socioeconomic and psychosocial factors, but it is underutilised in cancer research. Systematically mapping biomarkers of exposure to each hallmark of cancer could provide a powerful strategy to identify modifiable risk factors with translational relevance. Czechia, with its p

Environmental Exposures of Concern for Rheumatologists: Ultraviolet Radiation.

Climate change is increasing ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure, posing a significant threat to individuals with autoimmune diseases such as lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, and Sjögren's syndrome. UVR induces both local and systemic immune dysregulation through DNA damage, autoantigen exposure, and interferon-driven inflammation. While UVR's cutaneous effects are well studied, its role in systemic disease progression remains unclear. Limited epidemiologic data and inconsistent definitions of photosensitivity hinder clinical guidance. More robust research is needed to understand UVR's r

Environmental Exposures and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: A Review.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common heterogeneous endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age, affecting around 5 to 10% of women and up to 21% depending on the applied diagnostic criteria and study population. People with PCOS may experience oligomenorrhea, androgen excess, and polycystic ovary morphology. The etiology of the disease is not completely understood, with genetics, epigenetics, endocrine, metabolic, lifestyle, and environmental factors contributing to its development and severity. Environmental exposures are an important, burgeoning field in menstrual research

Occupational and environmental exposures, the association with chronic sinusitis.

OBJECTIVES: To find the association between environmental and occupational exposures and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) development. METHODS: The Preferred Reporting Items Of Systematic Reviews Guidelines were used when a systematic literature review was conducted to find all published cases of CRS by searching PubMed database and Google Scholar. Published articles between 1989 and 2021 that reported chronic and occupational rhinosinusitis were included. However, articles that reported allergic rhinitis or upper airway diseases and non-English articles were excluded from this study. RESULTS: A

Influences of environmental exposures on preterm lung disease.

Introduction: Environmental factors play a critical role in the progression or resolution of chronic respiratory diseases. However, studies are limited on the impact of environmental risk factors on individuals born prematurely with lung disease after they leave the neonatal intensive care unit and are discharged into the home environment.Areas covered: In this review, we cover current knowledge of environmental exposures that impact outcomes of preterm respiratory disease, including air pollution, infections, and disparities. The limited data do suggest that certain exposures should be avoide

Environmental exposure to pesticides and risk of thyroid diseases.

Occupational and environmental exposure to pesticides has been associated with thyroid dysfunction, particularly changes in circulating thyroid hormone levels (T3, T4) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). This study assessed the association between environmental exposure to pesticides and the risk of developing thyroid diseases. A population-based case-control study was carried out among Spanish populations living in areas categorized as of high or low pesticide use according to agronomic criteria, which were used as surrogates for environmental exposure to pesticides. The study population c

OBGYN screening for environmental exposures: A call for action.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposures have known adverse effects on maternal and neonatal outcomes. Professional societies recommend routine screening for environmental, occupational, and dietary exposures to reduce exposures and their associated sequelae. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to determine the frequency of environmental exposure screening by obstetricians and gynecologists (OBGYNs) at initial patient visits. STUDY DESIGN: Practicing OBGYNs were approached at the University of Colorado and by social media. The survey instrument queried demographics, environmental literacy, and screening prac

Environmental Exposure and Risk of Childhood Leukemia: An Overview.

Childhood leukemia is the most common cancer diagnosed in children worldwide. However, only a few causes have been established so far, mainly some genetic syndromes and high doses of ionizing radiation. Major efforts have been undertaken to study the relationship between environmental factors and the risk of childhood leukemia, inspired by geographical variation in incidence rates. Some evidence has emerged for parental occupational exposures to pesticides, whereas there is less evidence for an association with postnatal pesticide exposure. Diagnostic radiation and radon exposure have been sug

Exposure, epidemiology, and mechanism of the environmental toxicant manganese.

It has become increasingly apparent that global manganese (Mn) pollution to air and water is a significant threat to human health. Despite this recognition, research is only beginning to comprehend the detrimental effects of exposure. Mn, while essential, is particularly harmful to the central nervous system, and overexposure is symptomatic of several neurological disorders. At-risk populations have been identified, but it is still unclear whether typical exposure levels have any long-term consequences. Those at an elevated risk have diminished intellectual function, learning and memory, and m

Sun exposure is an environmental factor for the development of blepharospasm.

BACKGROUND: Adult-onset isolated focal dystonia may present with various phenotypes including blepharospasm and cervical dystonia. Although inherited in an autosomal dominant manner with a markedly reduced penetrance, environmental factors are considered important in disease penetrance and expression. We observed a marked variation by latitude in the reports of the frequency of patients with blepharospasm relative to those with cervical dystonia; we hypothesised that sun exposure is an environmental risk factor for the development of blepharospasm in genetically susceptible individuals.
