Medical illness in school-age Kenyans in relation to nutrition, cognition, and playground behaviors.

Because medical illness is associated with malnutrition, it might contribute to the poor outcomes seen in malnourished children. This study explored relations between frequency of mild illness and development in 133 mild-to-moderately malnourished school-age Kenyan children. Morbidity information was collected for one year. Concurrent assessments of cognitive status and playground behaviors were obtained. Nutritional and environmental variables were also assessed. Girls with more reported days of mild illness performed less well on developmental measures than did their healthier female peers.

Toxicological assessments of Gulf War veterans.

Concerns about unexplained illnesses among veterans of the 1991 Gulf War appeared soon after that conflict ended. Many environmental causes have been suggested, including possible exposure to depleted uranium munitions, vaccines and other drugs used to protect troops, deliberate or accidental exposure to chemical warfare agents and pesticides and smoke from oil-well fires. To help resolve these issues, US and UK governments have sought independent expert scientific advice from prestigious, independent scientific and public health experts, including the US National Academies of Science and the

Occupational asthma: review of assessment, treatment, and compensation.

Occupational asthma refers to asthma induced by exposure in the working environment to airborne dusts, vapors, or fumes, with or without preexisting asthma. Potential triggers of occupational asthma are diverse and involve a variety of postulated mechanisms. After confirming the presence of asthma, diagnosis hinges on obtaining a detailed and accurate occupational and environmental history and documenting a temporal association of symptoms or signs with workplace exposure. Management of occupational asthma centers on prescribing standard asthma therapies in conjunction with instituting prevent

Secondary depression in anxiety neurosis.

Forty-four per cent of 112 patients with anxiety neurosis reported episodes of depression during the course of their illness compared with only 7 per cent of surgical controls. Although the majority developed in response to environmental circumstances and were of brief duration, they commonly led to psychiatric treatment or hospitalization in this group of patients. Patients who developed this complication were shown to have a more chronic and severe underlying illness.

Indoor moisture and mold-related health problems.

Moisture, microbial and in particular mold related indoor exposure and health problems in homes, offices, and public buildings (Kindergartens, schools, library, and hospitals) have been gaining recognition as one of the most common indoor environmental health issues. Proper recognition of microbial related health problems and the differential diagnosis of sick building syndrome (SBS) or building related illness (BRI) are important for early and effective exposure intervention, treatment, referral and prevention of more serious illness.

Depression: a new approach to an old syndrome.

Depression is a medical illness related to an interplay of genetic, biochemical and environmental/experiential factors. Careful diagnosis, using contemporary psychiatric criteria, simplifies treatment by the family physician. Awareness of these criteria may lead to improved selection of candidates for drug treatment and early intervention in recurrent illness. The new nosology in psychiatry avoids much confusion and should take some of the guesswork out of psychiatric treatment in the family physician's office.

[Depression and manic-depressive disorders].

The two major subtypes of manic-depressive illness are bipolar disorder and recurrent major depressive disorder. Biological data strongly indicate that a significant genetic factor is involved in the development of manic-depressive illness. But, stressful life events, environmental stress and premorbid personality factors may also be involved in other important etiologic factors. Some research data indicate that cyclothymic disorder and temperamental disorders may be considered as mild forms of bipolar disorders so called "subaffective disorders". The identification of clinical or biological f

Bi-national outbreak of Salmonella Newport infections linked to onions: the United States experience.

From 2016-2019, dry bulb onions were the suspected cause of three multistate outbreaks in the United States. We investigated a large multistate outbreak of Salmonella Newport infections that caused illnesses in both the United States and Canada in 2020. Epidemiologic, laboratory and traceback investigations were conducted to determine the source of the infections, and data were shared among U.S. and Canadian public health officials. We identified 1127 U.S. illnesses from 48 states with illness onset dates ranging from 19 June to 11 September 2020. Sixty-six per cent of ill people reported cons

[Anorexia nervosa: demographic, socio-economic and cultural data still too limited].

Although eating disorders are a public health issue, treating anorexia nervosa from a demographic and socio-economic perspective remains a challenge. Data are scarce, patchy and often of questionable quality. Such a lack of data on a somatopsychic illness with serious repercussions is a real problem, since reliable, longitudinal and detailed information could provide additional answers in understanding the illness, both in terms of age, sex and gender structure, and in terms of family, social and environmental factors.

Etiopathogenesis of bipolar affective disorder - the state of the art for 2021.

The contemporary clinical idea of bipolar affective disorder (BD) has been shaped as an aftermath of Emil Kraepelin's thought named "manisch-depressives Irresein", put forward in 1899, with essential modifications during the last half-century. Acurrent paradigm for the etiopathogenesis of BD postulates the emergence of the illness as a result of an interaction between genetic and epigenetic factors with environmental influences. The most important for the molecular genetics of BD were the analyses of so-called candidate genes and genome-wide association studies (GWAS). The genetic BD profile in

Diagnosis and management of heat stroke and other heat-related illness in the emergency department.

Heat-related illness encompasses a spectrum of conditions ranging from heat cramps and heat exhaustion to life-threatening heat stroke, all resulting from impaired thermoregulation under excessive environmental heat load. The incidence and severity of heat-related illnesses are increasing, underscoring the need for evidence-based emergency management strategies. Accurate diagnosis requires differentiating heat-related illness from conditions that may mimic hyperthermia. Timely recognition and rapid cooling are the cornerstones of management. This review summarizes current evidence on the diagn

Severe acute illness in a toddler exposed to multiple agricultural pesticides and an insect repellent.

Acute severe pesticide-related illness among farm worker children is rarely reported. The authors report a toddler with acute onset of apnea, cyanosis, somnolence, hypotonia, tachycardia, and miosis who required hospitalization. Health care providers suspected pesticide poisoning, but were unable to determine the causal agent. Investigation by a public health program documented four pesticide exposures that occurred within one-half hour of acute illness. This case illustrates the importance of a thorough environmental/occupational exposure history and obtaining biological samples. It also docu

The Importance of Nidotherapy and Environmental Change in the Management of People with Complex Mental Disorders.

Much has been done in the last 50 years to achieve a better understanding of the psychosocial causes and other factors influencing the manifestation of mental illness, but there has been a conspicuous omission. Although gross environmental deficiencies were exposed in old mental institutions, 70 years ago the more subtle maladaptive settings that reinforce chronicity in mental illness have often been forgotten. In this review, the potential of systematic environmental manipulation as a treatment (nidotherapy) and other similar forms of management, used many times in the past but now mainly in

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), a condition also known as Chemical Sensitivity (CS), Chemical Intolerance (CI), Idiopathic Environmental Illness (IEI) and Toxicant Induced Loss of Tolerance (TILT), is an acquired multifactorial syndrome characterized by a recurrent set of debilitating symptoms. The symptoms of this controversial disorder are reported to be induced by environmental chemicals at doses far below those usually harmful to most persons. They involve a large spectrum of organ systems and typically disappear when the environmental chemicals are removed. However, no clear link has

Factors impacting the delivery of contextualized care in serious illness: a focus group study with healthcare professionals.

BACKGROUND: As the number and complexity of patients living with serious illness continue to rise, delivering care that is both effective and responsive to individual life contexts has become increasingly important. Despite its potential benefits, the implementation of contextualized care in the management of serious illness remains limited and poorly understood. To address this gap, this study aimed to identify barriers and facilitators influencing the delivery of contextualized care for patients with serious illness, as perceived by healthcare professionals (HCPs), and to generate recommenda

Illness associated with red tide--Nassau County, Florida, 2007.

A "red tide" is a harmful algal bloom that occurs when toxic, microscopic algae in seawater proliferate to a higher-than-normal concentration (i.e., bloom), often discoloring the water red, brown, green, or yellow. Red tides can kill fish, birds, and marine mammals and cause illness in humans. Florida red tide is caused by the dinoflagellate Karenia brevis, which produces toxins called brevetoxins and is most commonly found in the Gulf of Mexico; however, K. brevis blooms also can occur along the Atlantic coast. On September 25, 2007, a cluster of respiratory illnesses was reported to the Nass

Investigation of a cluster of Bacillus cereus bacteremia in neonatal care units.

BACKGROUND: Bacillus cereus is a well-known pathogen for self-limited foodborne illness, and rarely an opportunistic pathogen associated with invasive infections among immunocompromised patients. Nosocomial outbreaks have been rarely reported. METHODS: Between August and November 2019, four preterm neonates in neonatal care units of a medical center developed late-onset B. cereus bacteremia. An investigation was carried out. Forty-eight environmental specimens were obtained from these neonatal units, skin surface and environmental objects of Patient 4 for the detection of this organism 19 day

Causal item of Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ) scale: The main categories.

The causal item of illness perception from Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ) has no clearly defined response categories. It restricts the comparison of findings across studies on illness perception. Therefore, this study analyzed the causal item responses and proposed a categorization structure. The cohort study measurements were conducted at early cardiac rehabilitation and six months later. Illness perception was assessed using BIPQ scale with qualitative responses of causal item being independently coded by two researchers who assigned the responses to categories using template

Offspring of parents with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression: a review of familial high-risk and molecular genetics studies.

Offspring of parents with severe mental illness, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder, have a one-in-three risk of developing severe mental illness themselves. Over the last 60 years, three waves of familial high-risk studies examined the development of severe mental illness in offspring of affected parents. The first two waves established familial nature of schizophrenia, and demonstrated early impairment in offspring of affected parents. The most recent wave has added a focus on mood disorders and examined the transdiagnostic nature of familial risk. A syn
