Biological soil crusts (biocrusts) are photosynthetic soil-surface consortia that stabilize dryland soils, regulate hydrological fluxes, support nutrient cycling, and promote ecosystem recovery. However, inoculation often performs inconsistently because propagules must withstand desiccation, ultraviolet radiation, erosion, transport stress, and repeated wet-dry cycles before functional cover develops. This review evaluates encapsulated carrier-based bioformulation as a microbial delivery strategy for biocrust inoculants. It compares six platform families: dripping ionic gelation, reverse ionic

Waterborne pathogens find their way into water bodies through contamination of fecal discharge, stormwater run-offs, agriculture and industrial activities, and poor water infrastructure. These organisms are responsible for causing diarrheal, gastroenteritis, cholera, and typhoid diseases which raise an alarming sense on public human health due to the high mortality rate, especially in children. Several studies have indicated that these waterborne diseases can be managed by monitoring pathogens in water using traditional culture-based and molecular techniques. However, these methods have shown

The ecology of the most relevant Vibrio species for human health and their relation to water quality and biogeochemistry were studied in two estuaries in Argentinian Patagonia. Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus were reported in >29% of cases at the Río Colorado and Río Negro estuaries. Neither the pandemic serogroups of Vibrio cholerae O1, Vibrio cholerae O139 nor the cholera toxin gene were detected in this study. However, several strains of V. cholerae (not O1 or O139) are able to cause human disease or acquire pathogenic genes by horizontal transfer. Vibrio vulnificus was detected

Chlamydiae are a group of obligate intracellular bacteria comprising important human and animal pathogens as well as symbionts of ubiquitous protists. They are characterized by a developmental cycle including two main morphologically and physiologically distinct stages, the replicating reticulate body and the infectious nondividing elementary body. In this review, we reconstruct the history of studies that have led to our current perception of chlamydial physiology, focusing on their energy and central carbon metabolism. We then compare the metabolic capabilities of pathogenic and environmenta

We carried out a soil sampling survey in September 2008 in central Cayenne, French Guiana, using molecular methods to assess the presence of the dimorphic fungus Histoplasma capsulatum. Four of the 31 samples collected (12.9 %) tested positive by PCR, with confirmation of the result by DNA sequencing. H. capsulatum is therefore present in urban environments in French Guiana. These results provide additional support for the primary prophylaxis of AIDS-related histoplasmosis in French Guiana.

Phosphonates are organophosphorus molecules that contain the highly stable C-P bond, rather than the more common, and more labile, C-O-P phosphate ester bond. They have ancient origins but their biosynthesis is widespread among more primitive organisms and their importance in the contemporary biosphere is increasingly recognized; for example phosphonate-P is believed to play a particularly significant role in the productivity of the oceans. The microbial degradation of phosphonates was originally thought to occur only under conditions of phosphate limitation, mediated exclusively by the poorly

Legionella pneumophila is the major causative agent of Legionnaires’ disease. The distribution of L. pneumophila in environmental water systems of public facilities in Busan, South Korea was previously reported; however, the distribution of virulence genes in environmental and clinical isolates in Busan is unknown. Here, we investigated using PCR the distribution of three virulence loci (dot/icm, lvh, and rtxA) in isolates from Busan. A high prevalence of environmental (127/254) and clinical (3/4) isolates were observed for the simultaneous presence of all three genes, while environmental harb

Toilet flushing can contribute to disease transmission by generating aerosolized bacteria and viruses that can land on nearby surfaces or follow air currents. Aerobic and anaerobic bacterial bioaerosol loads, and bacterial counts on 2 surfaces in a bathroom with a permanently installed, automated ultraviolet C (UVC) irradiation device, were significantly lower than in a comparable bathroom without the UVC device. Permanently installed UVC lights may be a useful supplementary decontamination tool in shared patient bathrooms.

BACKGROUND: The airborne spreading of enteric viruses can occur through the aerosol and droplets produced by toilet flushing. These can contaminate the surrounding environment, but few data exist to estimate the risk of exposure and infection. For this reason environmental monitoring of air and selected surfaces was carried out in 2 toilets of an office building and in 3 toilets of a hospital before and after cleaning operations.
METHODS: To reveal the presence of norovirus, enterovirus, rhinovirus, human rotavirus, and Torque teno virus and to quantify human adenovirus and bacteria counts, m

Clostridia such as Clostridium tyrobutyricum, C. pasteurianum and C. butyricum may cause spoilage problems in certain types of food, but they are not normally regarded as dangerous. However some strains of C. butyricum have acquired the type E botulinum neurotoxin gene and have caused both infant and classical botulism in Italy (1986), China (1994) and India (1996). This study was carried out to examine a range of samples from fresh vegetables to food and environmental samples in the UK and test their ability to produce type E botulinal neurotoxin (BoNT) by probing for the presence of the toxi

Listeria monocytogenes infection affects people throughout the all world, most often causing gastrointestinal disturbances, less inflammation of the central nervous system (meningitis, meningoencephalitis, absceses), sepsis, endocarditis and dispersed focal inflammation. Listeria monocytogenes infection in pregnant woman can lead also to premature birth or abortion. Listeriosis is a serious problem because of the high mortality in case of generalized infection, which can reach up to 20%. Listeria strains could be identified by determination of biochemical features--characteristic for each List

Two isoprene (2-methyl-1,3-butadiene) utilizing bacteria, Alcaligenes denitrificans ssp. xylosoxidans JE 75 and Rhodococcus erythropolis JE 77, were identified as highly efficient cooxidizers of TCE, cis- and trans-dichloroethene, 1,1-dichloroethene and vinyl-chloride. Isoprene grown cells eliminate chloride from TCE in stoichiometric amounts and tolerate high concentrations of TCE.

A bacterium which utilizes benzylpenicillin as carbon, nitrogen and energy source was isolated from a lake sediment. The organism was identified as a strain of Pseudomonas fluorescens with a GC content of 59.71 Mol%. After growth of the organism on a mineral salts medium containing benzylpenicillin, the derivatives benzylpenicilloic acid, benzylpenilloic acid and benzylpenicillenic acid were found in culture media. There was no indication that the phenylacetate side chain of benzylpenicillin is decomposed. In uninoculated culture media benzylpenicillin, benzylpenicilloic acid and benzylpenicil

Emerging contaminants (ECs) in the environment pose a substantial worldwide problem. The pollution owing to these pollutants requires rigorous research due to their harmful impact on soil microbes, flora, fauna, and human health. This category contains a varied array of substances, including medications, personal care items, industrial chemicals, and microplastics. Such pollutants pose severe hazards to ecosystem integrity and biodiversity. Emerging pollutants largely come from anthropogenic activity, including industrial operations, and their abundance dramatically alters soil ecosystems. The

Recirculating showers save up to 70-80 % of the water and energy use of conventional showers, but water quality in these systems are not studied very well due to the technology's early stages. The aim of this study was to provide an overview of information available on which microorganisms were investigated and at which densities. Based on this platform we further aimed at identifying key microbial indicators and pathogens for monitoring water quality in these systems by integrating data from the top five waterborne outbreaks with findings from studies on (1) microbial investigations in reuse

Microbial and biochemical research has historically focused on pathogenic agents due to their clear association with disease. This is a perspective that has saved countless lives but encourages a skewed, threat-centered view of microbes and biogenic compounds. Emerging evidence shows that exposure to diverse environmental microbiomes and natural biochemical products is also salutogenic-promoting health and resilience. Here we introduce the 'Database of Salutogenic Potential', a prototype relational repository cataloguing environmental microbes and biochemical compounds linked to health benefit

This study aimed to detect and identify emerging pathogenic yeasts in surface waters from two Lagoon Systems in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, by polyphasic taxonomy. The monitoring of potentially pathogenic fungi in aquatic environments, especially in regions impacted by human actions, is highlighted in this study as one of the axes of the One Health approach. Water samples were collected, and after isolation, fungi were identified by polyphasic taxonomy, including MALDI-TOF-MS, which is also used for bacteria identification. Our results describe the physicochemical parameters of the surface water o
