Social, environmental and policy contexts affecting the feasibility and acceptability of improving household flooring for better health in rural Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Homes with unimproved floors (earth, sand, or clay) are associated with increased risks of soil-transmitted parasites and enteric infections, leading to higher morbidity and reduced quality of life. This study explored the enablers and barriers to adopting improved flooring (sealed, washable, and durable) in three culturally diverse regions of Kenya - Narok, Bungoma, and Kwale - to mitigate disease burdens. METHODS: Between August 2021 and July 2022, we conducted 24 focus group discussions with homeowners, stratified by age, gender, and floor type. Additionally, 28 key informant i

Tax or subsidy? The impact assessment of environmental policies on carbon allocation and emissions abatement of prefabricated construction supply chain.

The construction sector, as the prime culprit that aggravates greenhouse gas emissions, has initiated transitions in construction methods for emissions abatement. In such a context, prefabricated construction has been widely promoted in developing countries. This paper assesses the effects of three environmental policies: carbon tax, green subsidy, and unit subsidy on carbon allocation and emissions abatement of prefabricated construction supply chain (PCSC) consisting of a prefab manufacturer (PM) and a project developer (PD). In our game model, the PD determines a prefabricated ratio, the ra

Aerial Transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 Virus through Environmental E-Cigarette Aerosols: Implications for Public Policies.

We discuss the implications of possible contagion of COVID-19 through e-cigarette aerosol (ECA) for prevention and mitigation strategies during the current pandemic. This is a relevant issue when millions of vapers (and smokers) must remain under indoor confinement and/or share public outdoor spaces with non-users. The fact that the respiratory flow associated with vaping is visible (as opposed to other respiratory activities) clearly delineates a safety distance of 1-2 m along the exhaled jet to prevent direct exposure. Vaping is a relatively infrequent and intermittent respiratory activity f

Developing a novel conceptual model of how food and drink tax policy impacts on consumption, health, environmental and economic outcomes.

BACKGROUND: While food taxes are proposed to promote healthier dietary choices and mitigate diet-related diseases, addressing rising UK obesity requires navigating a highly complex web of causal mechanisms. Economic evaluations of these interventions often lack a documented understanding of this systemic complexity. To bridge this gap, this study aims to comprehensively map the system by identifying the specific components affected, the causal pathways (mechanisms), and the individual and system-level factors (context) influencing the ultimate impact of food taxes. METHODS: A diagrammatic rep

Do environmental stringent policies enhance the impact of renewable energy on CO2 reduction? Evidence from BRICS-T economies.

The pressing challenge of climate change necessitates a deeper understanding of how policy frameworks enhance the impact of renewable energy in reducing carbon emissions, particularly in rapidly developing economies. This study fills a crucial void by investigating the moderating role of stringent environmental policies on the nexus between renewable energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. The analysis covers data from the BRICS-T nations over the period 1990-2020. To assess the hypothesized relationships among the variables, we employed the Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOL

Existing Policies/Guidelines on the Environmental Dimension of Antimicrobial Resistance in India: An Insight into the Key Facets through Review and SWOT Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a multidimensional phenomenon. The environment acts as a mixing pot of drug-resistant bacteria from many sources such as pharmaceutical, biomedical, veterinary, and agricultural sectors. In this study, we analysed the existing AMR-related policies/guidelines/legislations in India in the above domains and how the current practices are being guided by them. METHODS: We used a convergent parallel mix method design. Quantitative data were collected through a review of policies/guidelines/legislations in the said domains and analysed using the SWOT too

The Environmental Burden and Sustainability Challenges of Clear Aligners: Implications for Public Health, Practice, Policy, and Future Research-A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Malocclusion is a major global oral health concern and has driven the rapid adoption of clear aligner therapy (CAT) as an esthetic and removable alternative to conventional fixed appliances. However, the widespread use of CAT has raised important concerns regarding its environmental footprint and potential public health implications, including waste generation, chemical leaching, and the release of microplastics. This scoping review aimed to systematically synthesize the available evidence on the environmental and public health implications of CAT and identify key areas in practice

From emissions to solutions: The role of green energy, environmental policy stringency, and political stability in achieving BRICS' carbon neutrality goals.

Rapid economic growth in BRICS countries has significantly increased carbon dioxide emissions, creating serious challenges for global environmental sustainability and climate goals. While previous research has often examined emission drivers in advanced economies or considered isolated factors, a critical gap remains in understanding the combined influence of multiple key determinants in the diverse BRICS context. This study addresses this gap by analyzing the joint effects of energy efficiency, green energy, environmental policy stringency, political stability, trade openness, and economic gr

Environmental characteristics and prevalence of birth defects among children in post-war Iraq: implications for policies on rebuilding the Iraqi education system.

This article explores the relationship between the prevalence of 'birth defects' and environmental characteristics, and considers implications for targeting resources to establish the educational inclusion of children affected. A household survey in four governorates across Iraq in 2010, conducted under the auspices of CARA, achieved interviews with 6032 households and collected data on more than 10,000 children and young people. Analyses suggested an association between reported presence of potential sources of contamination in local environments from human and domestic waste, and to some ext

Environmental factors and public health policy associated with human and rodent infection by leptospirosis: a land cover-based study in Nan province, Thailand.

Leptospirosis incidence has increased markedly since 1995 in Thailand, with the eastern and northern parts being the most affected regions, particularly during flooding events. Here, we attempt to overview the evolution of human prevalence during the past decade and identify the environmental factors that correlate with the incidence of leptospirosis and the clinical incidence in humans. We used an extensive survey of Leptospira infection in rodents conducted in 2008 and 2009 and the human incidence of the disease from 2003 to 2012 in 168 villages of two districts of Nan province in Northern T

Spatial distribution and sectoral characteristics of particulate matter-permitting emissions from heavy metal-emitting enterprises in China: Policy implications and environmental management strategies.

Industrial particulate matter (PM) emissions significantly contribute to air pollution and soil heavy metal contamination via deposition. In this study, the spatial distribution and sectoral variations in particulate matter-permitting emissions (PMpe) from heavy metal-emitting enterprises across China are analysed. We employed piecewise structural equation modelling to quantify the relative influences of geographic location, socioeconomic development, and climate conditions. The results revealed strong spatial agglomeration of enterprises, which exhibited a distinct "dense east, sparse west" p

Green technology and stringent environmental policy interactions in a spatial context: Assessing domestic and cross-border CO2 emission reductions in border sharing OECD economies.

Amidst escalating climate challenges, understanding how technological innovation and policy instruments jointly shape carbon outcomes is critical, particularly in spatially connected regions. While existing research has explored the independent impacts of green technologies (GTECH) and environmental policy stringency (EPS) on CO2 emissions, limited attention has been paid to their interactions and their spatial transmission. This study fills this gap by making a threefold contribution. First, it evaluates the individual and combined effects of GTECH and EPS on CO2 emissions in the home country

Triggering of cardiovascular hospital admissions by fine particle concentrations in New York state: Before, during, and after implementation of multiple environmental policies and a recession.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies reported triggering of acute cardiovascular events by short-term increasedPM2.5 concentrations. From 2007 to 2013, national and New York state air quality policies and economic influences resulted in reduced concentrations of PM2.5 and other pollutants across the state. We estimated the rate of cardiovascular hospital admissions associated with increased PM2.5 concentrations in the previous 1-7 days, and evaluated whether they differed before (2005-2007), during (2008-2013), and after these concentration changes (2014-2016). Aligning Horizon Scanning Approaches with Differing Needs and Topics at the Science-Policy Interface on Chemicals, Waste, and Pollution.

Knowledge on chemicals, waste, and pollution is shaped by geographical, financial, and disciplinary biases, which can cause blind spots for key emerging issues, including those relevant to low income countries and vulnerable communities. Scientists, practitioners, affected communities, and policy makers working in the areas of the newly established Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste, and Pollution (ISP-CWP) have interest in identifying issues of potential and emerging relevance that currently escape their attention. Horizon scanning offers a critical tool to identify su
