Integrating Health Research into Disaster Response: The New NIH Disaster Research Response Program.

The need for high quality and timely disaster research has been a topic of great discussion over the past several years. Recent high profile incidents have exposed gaps in knowledge about the health impacts of disasters or the benefits of specific interventions-such was the case with the 2010 Gulf Oil Spill and recent events associated with lead-contaminated drinking water in Flint, Michigan, and the evolving health crisis related to Zika virus disease. Our inability to perform timely research to inform the community about health and safety risks or address specific concerns further heightens

A Wearable Sensor Node for Measuring Air Quality Through Citizen Science Approach: Insights from the SOCIO-BEE Project.

Air pollution is a major environmental and public health challenge, especially in urban areas where fine-grained air quality data are essential to effective interventions. Traditional monitoring networks, while accurate, often lack spatial resolution and public engagement. This study presents a novel wearable wireless sensor node (WSN) that was developed within the Horizon Europe SOCIO-BEE project to support air quality monitoring through citizen science (CS). The low-cost, body-mounted WSN measures NO2, O3, and PM2.5. Three pilot campaigns were conducted in Ancona (Italy), Maroussi (Greece),

Citizen science shows that small agricultural streams in Germany are in a poor ecological status.

Agricultural pesticides, nutrients, and habitat degradation are major causes of insect declines in lowland streams. To effectively conserve and restore stream habitats, standardized stream monitoring data and societal support for freshwater protection are needed. Here, we sampled 137 small stream monitoring sites across Germany, 83 % of which were located in agricultural catchments, with >900 citizen scientists in 96 monitoring groups. Sampling was carried out according to Water Framework Directive standards as part of the citizen science freshwater monitoring program FLOW in spring and summer

Commentary on the contributions and future role of occupational exposure science in a vision and strategy for the discipline of exposure science.

Exposure science is a holistic concept without prejudice to exposure source. Traditionally, measurements aimed at mitigating environmental exposures have not included exposures in the workplace, instead considering such exposures to be an internal affair between workers and their employers. Similarly, occupational (or industrial) hygiene has not typically accounted for environmental contributions to poor health at work. Many persons spend a significant amount of their lifetime in the workplace, where they maybe exposed to more numerous chemicals at higher levels than elsewhere in their environ

From stratospheric ozone to climate change: historical perspective on precaution and scientific responsibility.

The issue of the impact of human activities on the stratospheric ozone layer emerged in the early 1970s. But international regulations to mitigate the most serious effects were not adopted until the mid-1980s. This case holds lessons for addressing more complex environmental problems. Concepts that should inform discussion include 'latency,' 'counter-factual scenario based on the Precautionary Principle,' 'inter-generational burden sharing,' and 'estimating global costs under factual and counter-factual regulatory scenarios.' Stringent regulations were adopted when large scientific uncertainty

Exposure Group Development in Support of the NIEHS GuLF Study.

In the GuLF Study, a study investigating possible adverse health effects associated with work on the oil spill response and clean-up (OSRC) following the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, we used a job-exposure matrix (JEM) approach to estimate exposures. The JEM linked interview responses of study participants to measurement data through exposure groups (EGs). Here we describe a systematic process used to develop transparent and precise EGs that allowed characterization of exposure levels among the large number of OSRC activities performed across the Gulf of Mexico over time a

Evaluating a Novel Gas Sensor for Ambient Monitoring in Automated Life Science Laboratories.

Air pollution and leakages of hazardous and toxic gases and chemicals are among the dangers that frequently occur at automated chemical and life science laboratories. This type of accident needs to be processed as soon as possible to avoid the harmful side effects that can happen when a human is exposed. Nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds are among the most prominent indoor air pollutants, which greatly affect the lifestyles in these places. In this study, a commercial MOX gas sensor, SGP41, was embedded in an IoT environmental sensor node for hazardous gas detection and alarm. The

Metal contamination in residential snow and indoor dust near the Horne Smelter: a citizen-science study in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec.

The Horne Smelter (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) is the only copper smelter in Canada and a major source of atmospheric emissions of toxic metals, including lead (Pb), arsenic (As), and cadmium (Cd). Biomonitoring studies have reported elevated exposure in nearby residents, yet limited data are available on the immediate residential environment. As part of a citizen-led initiative, residents collected indoor dust and snow to characterize indoor and outdoor residential metal contamination. Samples were collected from 23 residences and adjacent grounds located 540 to 2,080 m from the smelter. Cu, Pb, C

Insecticides for tsetse and trypanosomiasis control: is the environmental risk acceptable?

Tsetse control technology, as well as the science of environmental impact and risk assessment, has come a long way over the past 20 years. The application of science to tsetse control has significantly reduced impacts on the environment, and the costs of environmental monitoring and assessment have reduced dramatically. Environmental impacts are encountered with all insecticide-based techniques, but they appear to be relatively minor and short-lived. Despite a wealth of ecotoxicological information, conflict between real and imagined risks is hampering decision making. As discussed here by Ian

Development of an Interpretable Machine Learning Model for Neurotoxicity Prediction of Environmentally Related Compounds.

The rising prevalence of nervous system disorders has become a significant global health challenge, with environmental pollutants identified as key contributors. However, the large number of environmental related compounds, combined with the low efficiency of traditional methods, has resulted in substantial gaps in neurotoxicity data. In this study, we developed a robust and interpretable neurotoxicity prediction model using a high-quality data set. To identify the best predictive model, three molecular representation methods (molecular fingerprints, molecular descriptors, and molecular graphs

Environmental health collaboration: United States and Russia.

Developed nations share similar challenges to human health from commercial and agricultural chemicals that are released into the environment. Although Russia and the United States are historically distinct and unique, both countries are geographically large and economically dependent on emission-producing surface transportation. This paper describes U.S.-Russian collaborative activities that grew from a 1995 conference in Moscow that brought together environmental health investigators from both countries to discuss common concerns about the human health impact of environmental pollutants. Exploring prediction of tick and tick-borne encephalitis cases in Sweden using citizen science data.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) remains a severe public health threat in affected areas with shifting geographic distribution linked to environmental change. However, systematic tick surveillance is limited due to the cost and effort of field monitoring. Here, we evaluate the potential of using national citizen science tick data reports for predicting tick-human interaction and TBE risk alongside socioeconomic and environmental data. We integrate citizen science observations with socioeconomic and environmental data, and apply statistical and machine learning models to identify key drivers and a

The new nutrition science project.

OBJECTIVE: To show that nutrition science, with its application to food and nutrition policy, now needs a new conceptual framework. This will incorporate nutrition in its current definition as principally a biological science, now including nutritional aspects of genomics. It will also create new governing and guiding principles; specify a new definition; and add social and environmental dimensions and domains. METHOD: A narrative review of nutrition science, its successes and achievements, and its dilemmas, paradoxes, shortcomings, dissonances and challenges. Reference is made to 16 associat

Transdiscipline and research in health: science, society and decision making.

Significant advances in science should be given to addressing the needs of society and the historical context of the territories. Although technological developments that began with modernity and the industrial revolution allowed human beings to control the resources of nature to put to your service without limits, it is clear that the crisis of the prevailing development models manifest themselves in many ways but with three common denominators: environmental degradation, social injustice and extreme poverty. Consequently, today should not be possible to think a breakthrough in the developmen

Autoimmunity by pesticides: a critical review of the state of the science.

The goals of this paper will be to present a critical review of the state of the science of pesticides and autoimmunity, and to discuss research that addresses the potential links between environmental chemicals and autoimmune disease. To date, the science of immunotoxicology has primarily focused on immunosuppression and hypersensitivity/allergy, and test methods are available to address these outcomes. So much progress has been made to address immunosuppression and contact sensitization that there are regulatory guidelines in the U.S. included in the registration of pesticides. In contrast,

A Mixed Methods Approach to Understanding the Public Health Impact of a School-Based Citizen Science Program to Reduce Arsenic in Private Well Water.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to arsenic (As) in well water is a well-documented public health issue for Maine and New Hampshire, as well as for other states in the United States and abroad. Arsenic contamination of well water in these locations is primarily attributed to metasedimentary bedrock that leaches As into groundwater. However, As can also enter groundwater reserves from soils contaminated by the historical use of arsenical pesticides. Approximately half of the households in Maine and New Hampshire rely on private wells, many of which have elevated As. Arsenic exposure has been associated wit

Diethylnitrosamine (DEN)-induced carcinogenic liver injury in mice.

The toxic properties of various nitrosamines in animals and humans are well established. The parenteral or oral administration of the smallest quantities of diethylnitrosamine (DEN) or dimethylnitrosamine (DMN) results in severe liver damage. Most prominent are intense neutrophilic infiltration, extensive centrilobular haemorrhagic necrosis, bile duct proliferation, fibrosis, and bridging necrosis that ends in hepatocarcinogenesis. Due to the robustness of the induced hepatic alterations, the application of DEN in rodents has become an attractive experimental model for studies aimed at underst

Machine learning for environmental justice: Dissecting an algorithmic approach to predict drinking water quality in California.

The potential for machine learning to answer questions of environmental science, monitoring, and regulatory enforcement is evident, but there is cause for concern regarding potential embedded bias: algorithms can codify discrimination and exacerbate systematic gaps. This paper, organized into two halves, underscores the importance of vetting algorithms for bias when used for questions of environmental science and justice. In the first half, we present a case study of using machine learning for environmental justice-motivated research: prediction of drinking water quality. While performance var
