A new mayfly species of Ecdyonurus Eaton, 1868 from Eocene Baltic Amber and insights into the extant molecular diversity of the genus.

This contribution describes and discusses the first fossil record of a male imago belonging to the genus Ecdyonurus Eaton, 1868 (Ephemeroptera, Heptageniidae). The features of the genitalia, with the characteristic structure of the not projected apical sclerite of the penis lobes curved laterally, undoubtedly indicate its belonging to the subgenus Helvetoraeticus Bauernfeind & Soldán, 2012. Ecdyonurus (Helvetoraeticus) hoffeinsorum sp. nov. is established for a single adult specimen from the Eocene Baltic amber, and its taxonomical relationships are analysed. Furthermore, based on the unique s

Pesticide exposure affects DNA methylation patterns in natural populations of a mayfly.

Chemical pollutants derived from agricultural activities represent a major threat to freshwater biota. Despite growing evidence involving epigenetic processes, such as DNA methylation, in response to pesticide contamination in agroecosystems, research on wild populations of non-model species remains scarce, particularly for endemic freshwater arthropods. Using the MethylRAD method, this study investigates whether exposure to pesticide contamination in natural populations of the endemic mayfly A. torrens produces genome wide changes in levels of DNA methylation. From a total of 1,377,147 Methyl

Framework to Detect Schizophrenia in Brain MRI Slices with Mayfly Algorithm-Selected Deep and Handcrafted Features.

Brain abnormality causes severe human problems, and thorough screening is necessary to identify the disease. In clinics, bio-image-supported brain abnormality screening is employed mainly because of its investigative accuracy compared with bio-signal (EEG)-based practice. This research aims to develop a reliable disease screening framework for the automatic identification of schizophrenia (SCZ) conditions from brain MRI slices. This scheme consists following phases: (i) MRI slices collection and pre-processing, (ii) implementation of VGG16 to extract deep features (DF), (iii) collection of han

Post-release performance and dietary overlap of hatchery-reared Brown trout: Implications for restocking management in Türkiye.

Restocking programmes aim to enhance depleted wild fish populations by releasing hatchery-reared individuals. This study evaluated the growth performance and dietary overlap between hatchery-reared and wild Turkish brown trout (Salmo trutta Linnaeus, 1758) in the Çağlayan River, northeastern Türkiye. Over 18 months, growth metrics including length-weight relationships, condition factors and specific growth rates were assessed. Results demonstrated significant growth in hatchery-reared trout following initial acclimatization, with similar growth trajectories to wild fish. Dietary analyses throu

First experimental observations on the development of Rhabdochona denudata (Nematoda: Rhabdochonidae) in the intermediate host.

Two species of mayfly nymphs, Habroleptoides modesta (Hagen) and Habrophlebia lauta (Eaton) (Ephemeroptera: Leptophlebiidae), were found as suitable experimental intermediate hosts of the fish nematode Rhabdochona denudata (Dujardin, 1845) (Rhabdochonidae), an intestinal parasite of Palaearctic cyprinids. The parasite's eggs were obtained from nematode gravid females parasitizing the European chub, Leuciscus cephalus (L.), of the Rokytná River, Czech Republic. At the water temperature of 9 degrees C, the eggs of R. denudata were ingested by the intermediate host and the hatched, toothed (with

Using organic compounds and salt mixtures to investigate potential mechanisms of major ion toxicity to the mayfly Neocloeon triangulifer.

Field assessments and laboratory studies have demonstrated that mayflies (Ephemeroptera) are relatively sensitive to increased concentrations of major geochemical ions (Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, Cl-, SO42-, HCO3-/CO32-), but much remains to be learned about potential mechanisms of toxicity. In the present study, we sought to determine whether solution osmolarity is sufficient to predict the toxic effects of major ions to a mayfly, Neocloeon triangulifer. We further investigated whether binary mixtures of major ion salts with common cations or common anions provide evidence of concentration addition

Time-cumulative effects of neonicotinoid exposure, heatwaves and food limitation on stream mayfly nymphs: A multiple-stressor experiment.

The global intensification of agriculture has resulted in pesticides playing an increasingly important role as anthropogenic stressors and drivers of environmental change. There is also a growing need to determine if other environmental stressors, especially those predicted to worsen with climate change, interact with pesticides to alter their effects on non-target biota. Two such stressors are increased extreme temperature events and periods of food limitation. This study is the first to investigate the combined effects of the world's most widely used insecticide, imidacloprid, with heatwaves

Epidermis lesion detection via optimized distributed capsule neural network.

Skin cancer, encompassing various forms such as melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and others, remains a significant global health concern, often proving fatal if not diagnosed and treated in its early stages. The challenge of accurately diagnosing skin cancer, particularly melanoma, persists even for experienced dermatologists due to the intricate and unpredictable nature of its symptoms. To address the need for more accurate and efficient skin cancer detection, a novel Golden Hawk Optimization-based Distributed Capsule Neural Network (GHO-DCaNN) is proposed. This novel technique leverages advan

The life cycle of Magnivitellinum saltaensis n. sp. (Digenea: Alloglossidiidae) in Salta Province, Argentina.

We describe the alloglossiid trematode Magnivitellinum saltaensis n. sp., a parasite of the characiform fish Psalidodon endy, and its life cycle from Salta, northwest of Argentina. This is the first life cycle described for a species belonging to the genus Magnivitellinum. Cercariae emerged naturally from Biomphalaria tenagophila snails and infected experimentally exposed larvae of Diptera and Ephemeroptera as second intermediate hosts. These larvae in turn were exposed to commercially raised fish, and adults were recovered from characiform albino fish Gymnocorymbus ternetzi. Molecular analysi

Selenium Differentially Influences Methylmercury Retention across Mayfly Life Stages.

Though high mercury and selenium concentrations are individually toxic to organisms, there is a hypothesized antagonistic relationship. This potential mercury-selenium interaction is under-studied in aquatic macroinvertebrates, particularly in relation to complex life histories. We examined the proposed effect of selenium on methylmercury accumulation between four life stages for a parthenogenetic mayfly (Neocloeon triangulifer). We exposed diatoms to elevated methylmercury concentrations and fed them to mayflies exposed to elevated aqueous selenomethionine. We found some support for the mercu

Jumping and the aerial behavior of aquatic mayfly larvae (Myobaetis ellenae, Baetidae).

Mayfly larvae generally are aquatic, but some madicolous taxa (i.e., living in thin water films) crawl over rocks within streams and waterfalls. When startled, these larvae can break the water film, jump, and enter an aerial phase of locomotion. Because mayfly larvae have been suggested as potential exemplars for the origin of insect wings as tracheal gills, and furthermore represent the most basal extant lineage of pterygotes, we analyzed jumping behavior and free-fall trajectories for one such species of mayfly (Myobaetis ellenae, Baetidae) in Costa Rica. Jumping was commonplace in this taxo

Mud Dauber Nests as Sources of Spiders in Mercury Monitoring Studies.

Identifying ecosystems where biota may be contaminated with hazardous levels of methylmercury (MeHg) is a challenge. One widely used approach for determining site-specific MeHg contamination is to monitor MeHg contamination in sentinel species. Terrestrial shoreline spiders that consume emergent aquatic insects (e.g., midges and mayflies) have been proposed as sentinels of MeHg contamination of aquatic ecosystems. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether a novel sampling technique, collection of spiders from nests of mud dauber wasps (Sphecidae), would be an efficient method f

Lethal impacts of selenium counterbalance the potential reduction in mercury bioaccumulation for freshwater organisms.

Mercury (Hg), a potent neurotoxic element, can biomagnify through food webs once converted into methylmercury (MeHg). Some studies have found that selenium (Se) exposure may reduce MeHg bioaccumulation and toxicity, though this pattern is not universal. Se itself can also be toxic at elevated levels. We experimentally manipulated the relative concentrations of dietary MeHg and Se (as selenomethionine [SeMet]) for an aquatic grazer (the mayfly, Neocloeon triangulifer) and its food source (diatoms). Under low MeHg treatment (0.2 ng/L), diatoms exhibited a quadratic pattern, with decreasing diato

Mediterranean essential oils as effective weapons against the West Nile vector Culex pipiens and the Echinostoma intermediate host Physella acuta: what happens around? An acute toxicity survey on non-target mayflies.

Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) represent a threat for millions of people worldwide, since they act as vectors for important pathogens, including malaria, yellow fever, dengue and West Nile. Second to malaria as the world's most widespread parasitic disease, infection by trematodes is a devastating public health problem. In this study, we proposed two essential oils from plants cultivated in Mediterranean regions as effective chemicals against mosquitoes and freshwater snails vectors of Echinostoma trematodes. Chemical composition of essential oils from Achillea millefolium (Asteraceae) and Ha

Freshwater macroinvertebrates along the Nigeria-Cameroon border enhance the conservation value of the lower Guinea forest biodiversity hotspot.

In Nigeria and tropical Africa, the bias towards the protection of natural sites on account of terrestrial biodiversity or their resultant ecosystem services has led to a considerably low number of freshwater conservation studies in the region. To close this gap, six lotic freshwater systems in three different natural sites (Obudu Mountains, Agbokim Waterfalls, and Cross River National Park) along the Cameroon border of Nigeria were evaluated for the biodiversity of macroinvertebrates and some aspects of water quality in December 2021 and March 2022. Among other macroinvertebrate-related indic

Modeling the Bioavailability of Nickel and Zinc to Ceriodaphnia dubia and Neocloeon triangulifer in Toxicity Tests with Natural Waters.

We studied biotic ligand model (BLM) predictions of the toxicity of nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn) in natural waters from Illinois and Minnesota, USA, which had combinations of pH, hardness, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) more extreme than 99.7% of waters in a nationwide database. We conducted 7-day chronic tests with Ceriodaphnia dubia and 96-hour acute and 14-day chronic tests with Neocloeon triangulifer and estimated median lethal concentrations and 20% effect concentrations for both species. Toxicity of Ni and Zn to both species differed among test waters by factors from 8 (Zn tests with C.

The effects of spinosad on Culex quinquefasciatus and three nontarget insect species.

Spinosad is a relatively new insecticide with a unique mode of action that is being evaluated for control of larval mosquitoes. Whereas a number of toxicological studies have measured effects of spinosad on various animals, few have been conducted on the effects of spinosad on nontarget, aquatic insect species. Such studies are important as these species might be found in the same environments as mosquito larvae targeted for control. A neighborhood pond was surveyed to find a representative species of mosquito as well as other common aquatic insects with which to examine susceptibility to spin

Large river treatment with Bacillus thuringiensis (H-14) for the control of Simulium damnosum s.l. in the Onchocerciasis Control Programme.

Complete mortality of Simulium damnosum Theobald s.l. larvae was obtained along a 19 km stretch of the Marahoué River including and downstream of the Danangoro rapids complex in the Bandama Basin of Ivory Coast after treatment with 1.5 ppm/10 min of the Sandoz 402-1-WDC formulation of Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner serotype H-14. Partial control was observed for an additional 15 km. The level of control was especially encouraging considering the low concentration (.8%) of active ingredient in the Sandoz formulation. Additionally, the treated population has demonstrated resistance to temephos

Lethal and sublethal toxicity of neonicotinoid and butenolide insecticides to the mayfly, Hexagenia spp.

Neonicotinoid insecticides are environmentally persistent and highly water-soluble, and thus are prone to leaching into surface waters where they may negatively affect non-target aquatic insects. Most of the research to date has focused on imidacloprid, and few data are available regarding the effects of other neonicotinoids or their proposed replacements (butenolide insecticides). The objective of this study was to assess the toxicity of six neonicotinoids (imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, acetamiprid, clothianidin, thiacloprid, and dinotefuran) and one butenolide (flupyradifurone) to Hexagenia sp

Physiological responses to short-term thermal stress in mayfly (Neocloeon triangulifer) larvae in relation to upper thermal limits.

Understanding species' thermal limits and their physiological determinants is critical in light of climate change and other human activities that warm freshwater ecosystems. Here, we ask whether oxygen limitation determines the chronic upper thermal limits in larvae of the mayfly Neocloeon triangulifer, an emerging model for ecological and physiological studies. Our experiments are based on a robust understanding of the upper acute (∼40°C) and chronic thermal limits of this species (>28°C, ≤30°C) derived from full life cycle rearing experiments across temperatures. We tested two related predic
