[Epidemiologic characteristics and risk factors for congenital hypothyroidism from 1989 to 2014 in Beijing].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the epidemiologic characteristics and risk factors for congenital hypothyroidism (CH) in Beijing between the years 1989 and 2014. METHODS: Information on neonatal screening, and diagnoses and treatment of CH from 1989 to 2014 were obtained from the database of the Beijing Neonatal Screening Center. The screening parameter was thyroid-stimulating hormone (thyrotropin; TSH), which was measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA) from 1989 to 1995, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) from 1996 to 2003, and time-resolved fluorescence immunoassay (DELFIA(®)) from 2004 to 2014

Epidemiologic, Virologic, and Host Genetic Factors of Norovirus Outbreaks in Long-term Care Facilities.

BACKGROUND: In the Unites States, long-term care facilities (LTCFs) are the most common setting for norovirus outbreaks. These outbreaks provide a unique opportunity to better characterize the viral and host characteristics of norovirus disease. METHODS: We enrolled 43 LTCFs prospectively to study the epidemiology, virology, and genetic host factors of naturally occurring norovirus outbreaks. Acute and convalescent stool, serum, and saliva samples from cases, exposed and nonexposed controls were collected. Norovirus infection was confirmed using quantitative polymerase chain reaction testing

Amebic liver abscess with bacterial superinfection in a patient with no epidemiologic risk factors.

The amebic liver abscess is uncommon in developed countries like Spain, but the incidence is increasing probably due to the migratory movements of the population. We report a case of an amebic abscess, initially unsuspected due to the absence of epidemiologic risk factors and the negative serology for amebiasis, in the early stages of the disease.

Risk factors for hearing disorders: epidemiologic evidence of change over time in the UK.

The prevalence** of all bilateral sensorineural hearing impairments of at least 40 dB HL was assessed by a retrospective ascertainment study to be about 1.2 children per 1000 births per annum, over the period 1983-1988. This prevalence was highly variable over year and region of the study. For all profound (at least 95 dB HL) impairments, the prevalence was 1 in 2703 children per birth cohort. The contribution of acquired impairments and inter-region transfers after birth was not trivial, being over 25 percent for the profound impairments. The proportion of the bilateral moderately profoundly

The UCLA-University of Utah epidemiologic survey of autism: prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal factors.

In a recent epidemiologic survey conducted in Utah, 241 autistic patients (DSM-III criteria) were found. Medical records of 233 autistics were surveyed for the presence of 36 potentially pathologic prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal factors. These results were compared with those of an identical survey of 62 of their nonautistic siblings, with the results of four previously published surveys, and with normative data. No potentially pathologic factor or group of factors occurred significantly more frequently among the autistic patients. Also, previous observations of significant differences in

Epidemiologic and clinical factors of Chlamydia trachomatis in black, Hispanic and white female adolescents.

Rates of genital infection with Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Trichomonas vaginalis were determined prospectively in 396 sexually active female adolescents from three ethnically different urban teen clinics. The organisms were identified respectively in cultures of specimens from 21%, 7% and 6% of all adolescents; 28%, 16% and 20% of blacks; 23%, 4% and 2% of Hispanics, and 14%, 2% and 1% of whites. C trachomatis was identified in specimens from 27% of pregnant adolescents and from 42% of adolescents who had gonorrhea or trichomoniasis. Of 85 Chlamydia-positive adolescents,

Fetal Gastroschisis: Maternal Epidemiologic Profile and Influence of Possible Risk Factors on Neonatal Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the maternal epidemiological profile for gastroschisis as well as to assess whether the presence of meconium at birth was associated with adverse neonatal outcomes. METHODS: This was a retrospective observational cohort study that included 52 neonates with gastroschisis whose mothers had delivery at our service. The variables observed were the following: 1) socio-demographic data, 2) ultrasonographic data, 3) birth data, and 4) neonatal outcomes. Simple (univariate) and multiple (multivariate) logistic regression models were used to examine the

An Epidemiologic Investigation of Potential Risk Factors for Nodding Syndrome in Kitgum District, Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Nodding Syndrome (NS), an unexplained illness characterized by spells of head bobbing, has been reported in Sudan and Tanzania, perhaps as early as 1962. Hypothesized causes include sorghum consumption, measles, and onchocerciasis infection. In 2009, a couple thousand cases were reportedly in Northern Uganda. METHODS: In December 2009, we identified cases in Kitgum District. The case definition included persons who were previously developmentally normal who had nodding. Cases, further defined as 5- to 15-years-old with an additional neurological deficit, were matched to village

[The first epidemiologic survey among Hungarian elite athletes: eating disorders, depression and risk factors].

UNLABELLED: It is a fact that the incidence rate of anorexia nervosa is high among athletes who are considered a high-risk population in terms of eating disorders, and it is known as anorexia athletica by specialised literature. Our goal is to assess the prevalence of eating disorders among leading Hungarian athletes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Before the 2008 Olympics we conducted questionnaire surveys in several Hungarian training camps: demographic and training data, anorexia nervosa inventory for self-rating (ANIS) and the bulimia investigation test, Edinburgh (BITE). We processed the data wit

The CHARGE study: an epidemiologic investigation of genetic and environmental factors contributing to autism.

Causes and contributing factors for autism are poorly understood. Evidence suggests that prevalence is rising, but the extent to which diagnostic changes and improvements in ascertainment contribute to this increase is unclear. Both genetic and environmental factors are likely to contribute etiologically. Evidence from twin, family, and genetic studies supports a role for an inherited predisposition to the development of autism. Nonetheless, clinical, neuroanatomic, neurophysiologic, and epidemiologic studies suggest that gene penetrance and expression may be influenced, in some cases strongly

Methodologic issues in assessing risk factors for epilepsy in an epidemiologic study in India.

OBJECTIVES: To test a field questionnaire for epilepsy risk factors in rural India. BACKGROUND: Case-control studies are necessary to plan appropriate prevention and intervention strategies against epilepsy but difficult to mount in developing countries for various logistic and cultural reasons. Recent studies have proposed nutritional and infective risk factors not reported in Western studies. METHODS: A structured questionnaire including known and putative risk factors was administered to parents of 61 children with epilepsy and 59 randomly selected population control subjects in rural Wes

Epidemiologic study of 19-month-old Edmonton, Alberta children: caries rates and risk factors.

A random sample of 938 19-month-old Edmonton children and their parents/caretakers were studied. Parents were interviewed and children were examined. Specimens for a caries activity test were collected at the examination. Results indicated 25 percent of the children had moderate to high caries activity, as shown by the Cariostat, with 4.6 percent showing decalcification lesions and frank caries. Early caries (BBTD) were found to be related to bottle feeding practices, discomfort with allowing the child to cry, and with mother being foreign-born. Foreign-born status was associated with the abov

[Evaluation of epidemiologic risk factors for endometrial carcinoma based on a case-control study].

In a case-control-study an epidemiological investigation of cancer of the endometrium was carried out. The study included 159 cases and 159 controls. It was shown, that woman in the sixth life decade with overweight, a smaller number of deliveries and a later menopause had a higher risk for endometrial cancer. Other risk factors are diabetes mellitus and hypertension. But it is necessary to see the relationship between the typical age for these two characteristics and the typical age for endometrial cancer. The intake of estrogens without enough gestagens during an estrogen replacement therapy

Epidemiology of cardiovascular risk factors: Behavioural risk factors.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have a multifactorial origin. Among the risk factors, so-called behavioural risk factors play a major role in the onset of these diseases: smoking, unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity and sedentary lifestyle, alcohol, sleep disorders, depression and illicit drug use are among the main behavioural risk factors for CVD and are considered to be modifiable and accessible to prevention. The prevalence of these cardiovascular risk factors remains high among the French population. Nearly one in three adults are smokers, 71.7% do not meet the recommendation to eat
