Fukuyama type Congenital Muscular Dystrophy, inherited autosomal-recessively, is characterized by muscular dystrophy associated with severe mental retardation and epileptic convulsions. By examining 56 cases, followed for more than three years, 75 EEG records from 40 patients and visual evoked potentials from 11 patients with reference to autopsied materials, the authors aimed at clarifying the causative relationship between congenital central nervous system (CNS) lesions and childhood epilepsy. In 36 out of 56 cases diffuse epileptic seizures were observed with onset at 1.64 +/- 1.01 years av

A 24-year-old woman with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome had complex partial and right sensory motor seizures. MRI showed periventricular subependymal heterotopias, agenesis of the posterior part of the corpus callosum, mega cisterna magna, and aneurysms of the sinuses of Valsalva. This may constitute a new subtype of type 1 Ehlers-Danlos syndrome characterized by X-linked periventricular subependymal heterotopias and epilepsy.

One hundred and fifty patients of epileptic psychosis, registered over a period of five years in neuropsychiatry clinics at NIMHANS were studied. Patients with organic causes which may produce both epilepsy and psychosis were excluded. The epileptic psychosis ratio to epilepsy was 1:23 and the epileptic psychosis ratio to psychosis was 1:75. The mean age at the onset of epilepsy was 19.4 years, while the mean age at the onset of psychosis was 29 years and thus the mean duration of epilepsy at the onset of psychosis was 9.4 years. With regard to type of seizures, 93 (62%) had grandmal, 50 (33.3

We report a three-generation, clinically heterogeneous family in which we identify a novel inherited splicing mutation of the SCN1A gene. Thirteen subjects were submitted to genetic analysis, clinical and instrumental examination, and neuropsychological assessment. In eight subjects, a heterozygous c.2946+5G>A donor splice site alteration in the SCN1A gene was found. Half of them had never had a seizure and showed normal EEG and cognitive profile, whereas the other half had a history of seizures and variable neuropsychological impairments ranging from moderate cognitive disabilities to mild vi

OBJECTIVE: Laser interstitial thermal therapy has become increasingly popular for targeting epileptic foci in a minimally invasive fashion. Despite its use in >1000 patients, the long-term effects of photothermal injury on brain physiology remain poorly understood.
METHODS: We prospectively followed clinical and radiographic courses of 13 patients undergoing laser ablation for focal epilepsy by the senior author (N.T.). Only patients with nonenhancing lesions and patients who had a delayed postoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan with gadolinium administration approximately 6 month

We describe 31 children with runs of high amplitude and variable frequency spike-and-wave discharges on the occipito-postero-temporal regions at the EEG. This characteristic EEG pattern can be seen on the posterior areas of one or both hemispheres only when the eyes are closed. A functional spike-wave focus of temporo-rolandic localization also occurred in 13 cases. Clinically, 10 children were seizure-free with minimal brain dysfunction in 8 of them. Of these, only 4 patients suffered from febrile convulsions while the 17 other patients were undergoing treatment for visual, motor or vegetativ

Cysticercosis has been reported in Muslim countries in workers coming from endemic regions for Taenia solium. For the first time in Mali, the authors report a case of autochtonous neurocysticercosis where Muslim religion is predominent. The patient was a woman student with fever, arthralgia, headaches, consciousness troubles followed by partial motor epilepsy. Diagnosis was confirmed by clinic, serology ELISA and Western blotting and cephalic tomodensitometry analysis. The medical treatment was successfully based on combination of albendazole and praziquantel. The origin of contamination remai

We report two children, suffering from idiopathic partial epilepsy, who started to present, in the same period of time, with epileptic negative myoclonus (ENM) in one lower limb and fecal incontinence (FI). Polygraphic recordings showed that ENM was associated with paroxysmal activities distributed over the vertex region. Both ENM and FI disappeared when ethosuximide treatment was started. We hypothesize that, in our patients, ENM in one lower limb and FI depended on a transitory impairment, caused by epileptic activity that altered the functionality of nearby cortical areas, located in fronto

The disorder of autosomal dominant nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy has recently been identified, and is now delineated in detail. A phenotypically homogeneous group of five families from Australia, Britain and Canada, containing 47 affected individuals, was studied. The largest family contained 25 affected individuals spanning six generations. This disorder is characterized by clusters of brief nocturnal motor seizures, with hyperkinetic or tonic manifestations. Subjects often experienced an aura, and remained aware throughout the attacks. Seizures occurred in clusters (mean eight attacks/nigh

PURPOSE: To clarify the neurophysiological mechanism of epileptic negative myoclonus (NM) of a patient with atypical benign partial epilepsy whose NM was completely suppressed with ethosuximide.
METHODS: Polygraphic recordings of whole-head type magnetoencephalography (MEG), EEG and electromyography were made during NM of the bilateral hands. The silent period of 200-400 ms duration in the bilateral biceps muscles was associated with paroxysmal spikes on EEG and MEG. Single equivalent current dipoles (ECD) were calculated for each spike component associated with NM and the estimated generator

INTRODUCTION: Neurocysticercosis is one of the main causes of epilepsy in the tropics, particularly in Central and South America.
OBJECTIVES: To report the only five patients diagnosed in a tertiary care institution as having neurocysticercosis and its relation to epilepsy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We made a retrospective study, reviewing the clinical histories of patients admitted to the Instituto de Neurologia y Neurocirugia of La Habana, Cuba, over 25 years up to 1989, to determine those with neurocysticercosis.
RESULTS: We found only five patients, representing a frequency of 0.01% of all

To clarify the mechanism by which inhibitory motor responses such as cortical negative myoclonus are generated in humans, three patients with medically intractable partial epilepsy (two with frontal lobe epilepsy and one with parietal lobe epilepsy) were studied by means of direct cortical stimulation with a single electric pulse through subdural electrodes. All underwent chronic long-term video/EEG monitoring, cortical mapping by 50 Hz electric cortical stimulation and recording of cortical somatosensory evoked potentials with chronically implanted subdural grid electrodes (3 mm in diameter a

A male presenting with benign partial epilepsy with rolandic spikes from the age of 7 years was evaluated at age 11 years for worsening of his epilepsy associated with a specific regression of graphomotor skills. A longitudinal study over nearly 2 years showed an improvement in handwriting to an almost normal level under modified antiepileptic therapy. A detailed analysis with a computer-monitored graphics table showed at first a rapid improvement of skills followed by protracted slower progress. We argue that the initial rapid recovery of skills was directly linked to the improvement of his e

OBJECTIVE: To present a seven-cases serie of Mowat-Wilson syndrome (MWS).
METHOD: All patients with positive mutation for the ZEB2 were evaluated by a geneticist and a neurologist, with clinical and laboratorial characterization.
RESULTS: A peculiar facies and mental retardation were present in all patients. The Denver II scale showed intense delay in all aspects, especially fine motor and adaptive. Acquired microcephaly was observed in five patients. Only one patient did not present epilepsy. Epilepsy was focal and predominating in sleep, with status epilepticus in three patients. The initi

The electro-clinical features of neonatal seizures were described. Although they were usually secondary to the underlying pathological process, there were a few cases of benign familial convulsions which seemed to be dominantly inherited. In the new born, clinical seizures occurred mainly in active-REM sleep in contrast to those in the older children and adults. Atypical seizures were also seen in young infants, although less frequently than in the newborn. There were a considerable number of epilepsies beginning in the first year of life associated with a favorable prognosis. Unclassified epi

RATIONALE: Reading epilepsy (RE) is a form of reflex epilepsy currently classified as an idiopathic localization-related epilepsy (ILAE, 1989).
METHODS: We describe a 30 year-old right-handed male who suffered since the age of 8 from nocturnal partial motor seizures. Clinical features were typical of BECT. We reviewed the EEG recorded at that time which showed centrotemporal spike and waves. He was seizure-free from the age of 12 to the age of 17 when seizures evoked only by reading appeared. No other stimuli provoked seizures. Neurological and neuroradiological (CT and MR) investigations wer

We report a 20-year-old man with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) accompanied by hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN). He had experienced complex partial seizures (CPS), which started with a nausea-like feeling, followed by loss of consciousness and automatism, since he was 6 years old. The frequency of attacks was at first decreased by phenytoin. However, attacks increased again when he was 18 years old. On admission, neurological examination showed mild weakness of the toes, pes cavus, hammer toe and mildly impaired vibratory sensation in his legs. Ten people in four generations of his

Focal epilepsies of childhood with complex partial seizures, with or without secondarily generalized seizures are reviewed. Particular emphasis is placed on the semiology of seizures, which are subdivided into: aura, disturbance of consciousness, speech disturbances, automatims, and other motor and vegetative seizure symptoms. The significance of routine ictal and interictal EGGs and their importance for the localization is discussed. Recent neuropathological findings and etiology are presented and the courses epilepsies can take (especially those involving febrile convulsions), prognosis and

INTRODUCTION: Partial benign epilepsy of childhood with occipital paroxysms (EPBI-O) described by Gastaut in 1982, has been recognized in the latest Classification of Epilepsy and Epileptic Syndromes as being a form of idiopathic partial epilepsy. In 1989 Panayiotopoulos described a different form of idiopathic occipital epilepsy.
OBJECTIVE: We analyzed the electro-clinical characteristics of EPBI-O in order to identify the different forms of idiopathic occipital epilepsy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This prospective study included 74 patients who fulfilled the diagnostic criteria of EPBI-O. The p

Partial seizures are not uncommon in children. They are classified into two types: simple partial, without impairment of consciousness, and complex partial, with impaired consciousness. For both types, the hallmark is onset of the seizure from a portion of one cerebral hemisphere, as indicated by focal spikes or sharp waves on EEG. The symptoms of simple partial seizures may include focal motor or somatosensory phenomena, special sensory phenomena, autonomic symptoms, or psychic symptoms, and these symptoms may occur alone or they may progress into a complex partial seizure with alteration of
