Spindle cell melanoma: a comparison of the cytomorphological features with the epithelioid variant.

OBJECTIVES: Fine-needle aspiration cytology serves as a rapid and cost-effective tool for the diagnosis of melanoma, especially in the recurrent and metastatic cases. The diagnosis poses a challenge due to the varied morphological patterns. Spindle cell melanoma mimics other sarcomas and carcinomas on morphology. This study highlights the cytomorphological features of spindle cell melanoma and compares them with the conventional epithelioid type. STUDY DESIGN: Cytology smears of 55 aspirates from 45 diagnosed cases of melanoma from various sites were reviewed. Histopathology correlation was d

[Epithelioid cell granuloma in sarcoidosis: light and electron microscopic morphology].

Light and electron microscopic features of epithelioid cell granuloma in sarcoidosis were presented, focusing on the lymph node and the lung which are mostly involved. The distribution of granulomas is frequently conglomerated with occasionally central necrosis. Hamazaki-Wesenberg body in lymph node is considered to be closely associated with Propionibacterium acnes. Granuloma is encircled by reticulin fibers and collagen fibers within the granuloma are detected in electron microscopy. Granuloma may disappear but some develop hyalinization and fibrosis associated with lymphatic and vascular in

Proton-beam irradiated epithelioid cell melanoma of the ciliary body.

A malignant ciliary body melanoma received proton-beam irradiation. After an apparent failure of the tumor to respond, the eye was enucleated. A predominantly epithelioid cell tumor appeared viable by light microscopy, and a low degree of mitotic activity persisted, despite therapy. The tumor cells, however, displayed degenerative changes ultrastructurally, presumably results of the radiotherapy. These consisted of numerous cytoskeletal filaments, lipid vacuoles, prominent phagolysosomes, and nuclear convolutions and fragmentations. The mitochondria were fewer in number in the present tumor th

Epithelioid cell granulomata in the mucosa of the small intestine in Whipple's disease.

This report is the first description of sarcoid-like epithelioid cell granulomata in the mucosa of the small intestine in a case of Whipple's disease. The epithelioid cells do not contain PAS-positive material or products of bacterial degradation. Their ultrastructural features characterize them as histiocytes which have become secretory rather than phagocytic. These sarcoid-like lesions are considered to be a morphological manifestation of an immunological process in Whipple's disease and not to represent evidence of sarcoidosis as a concomitant or associated disorder.

The differentiation of monocytes into macrophages, epithelioid cells, and multinucleated giant cells in subcutaneous granulomas. I. Fine structure.

The morphological changes occurring in monocytes during their differentiation into macrophages, epithelioid cells, Langhans-type giant cells, and foreign-body-type giant cells were investigated in foreign-body granulomas induced by subcutaneous implantation of pieces of Melinex plastic. Analysis based on Adams's (1974) criteria for discrimination between the several types of cell of the monocyte line, showed that each type has a characteristic type of granule. Primary and secondary granules, numerous in the Golgi area of monocytes were generally found close to the cell membrane and decreased i

An Evaluation of Radiotherapy and Response in the Management of Perivascular Epithelioid Cell Tumors.

OBJECTIVES: Perivascular epithelioid cell tumours (PEComas) are ultra-rare soft tissue tumours with heterogeneous treatment approaches. While surgery is the standard for localized disease, the role of radiotherapy (RT) remains unclear. METHODS: This retrospective study aims to evaluate tumour volume response, as well as local outcomes and Overall Survival, in patients with PEComa treated with RT. The cohort included patients diagnosed with PEComa between 2005 and 2023 at a single sarcoma centre. Demographic, clinical, RT, and volumetric tumour data were collected. Response was assessed using

Thyroid perivascular epithelioid cell tumor: A rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are rare mesenchymal tumors with histological and immunophenotypic characteristics of perivascular epithelioid cells, characterized by smooth muscle and melanocytic markers. Herein, we report a case of PEComa originating in the thyroid gland. CASE PRESENTATION: A 36-year-old woman presented with a thyroid nodule detected on physical examination that gradually enlarged during a 3-year follow-up period. The patient underwent a unilateral thyroidectomy after completing the relevant preoperative investigations. Postoperative pathological

Primary bladder perivascular epithelioid cell tumour in an early adolescent.

Primary bladder perivascular epithelioid cell tumours (PEComas) are rare tumours that typically present in the third or fourth decade of life. Radiological and histopathological findings play a crucial role in establishing the diagnosis, and treatment is primarily based on surgical excision. We present the case of a primary bladder PEComa in an early adolescent male presenting with macroscopic haematuria and a hypervascular bladder mass. These peculiar symptoms should prompt consideration of the rare diagnosis of PEComa, even in paediatric patients.

Hepatic Perivascular Epithelioid Cell Tumor (PEComa): A Case Report.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are a rare group of mesenchymal neoplasms composed of perivascular epithelioid cells. While commonly found in the kidney, uterus, and soft tissues, PEComas of the liver are exceedingly rare.  We present a case of a PEComa incidentally discovered in a 73-year-old female patient undergoing evaluation for abdominal pain. Imaging revealed an indeterminant mass in the left hepatic lobe without internal color uptake on Doppler flow. Histopathological evaluation was consistent with PEComa. The tumor was mainly composed of well-circumscribed epithelioid a

Orbital Perivascular Epithelioid Cell Tumor in a Case of Tuberous Sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a significant issue, partly due to the lack of evidence-based prevention programs involving parents and teachers. In Indonesia, no integrated CSA prevention app exists for parents, teachers, and children. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Mobile Application (CSAP_Mob App) in empowering parents and teachers to improve children's knowledge and attitudes, as well as parental and teacher knowledge and communication practices. The primary outcome is the change in children's knowledge and attitudes, while the secondary

Histopathologic characteristics and immunotypes of perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComa).

OBJECTIVES: In order to provide further evidence for the origin and differentiation of PEComa, the clinicopathologic and immunophenotype findings were analyzed in 26 cases with literature review. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry and special staining were used. RESULTS: Multinucleated giant cells and polymorphism were scattered visibly in 53.8% and 76.9% of the cases and spotty necrosis and hemorrhage were observed in 38% of the cases. Capsular micro-invasion was detected in 46% cases accompanied by hemorrhage and/or necrosis in the tumors with diameters larger than 5 cm. It was also found that

[Epithelioid cell granuloma of the liver mimicking a primary phrenic tumor].

We here report an epithelioid cell granuloma of the liver, imaging of which mimicked a phrenic tumor. A 75-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital for evaluation of an abnormal shadow in the left lower lung field on a chest X-ray. Surgery was performed for a suspected schwannoma arising from the phrenic nerve or a primary diaphragmatic tumor based on chest computed tomography(CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The intra-operative findings showed that the tumor did not originate from the diaphragm but from the left lobe of the liver with feeding vessels from the liver. Securing a suf

[A case of a perivascular epithelioid cell tumor mimicking colon cancer].

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is extremely rare, which originated from mesenchymal cells in the intestine, and composed of histologically and immunohistochemically distinctive perivascular epithelioid cells. We report here on a case of PEComa in the sigmoid colon. A 62-year-old woman presented with hematochzia 10 days ago. Her abdominal computed tomography scan showed a 5 cm sized intraluminal fungating heterogeneously enhanced, high density mass, which infiltrated pericolic tissue surrounding the sigmoid colon. Colonoscopy showed a purple colored polypoid mass with lobulating c

Molecular pathology of lymphangioleiomyomatosis and other perivascular epithelioid cell tumors.

CONTEXT: Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a cystic lung disease that can be included in the wide group of proliferative lesions named PEComas (perivascular epithelioid cell tumors). These proliferative tumors are characterized by the coexpression of myogenic and melanogenesis-related markers. In all these lesions, genetic alterations related to the tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) have been demonstrated. Striking improvements in the understanding of the genetic basis of this autosomal dominant genetic disease are coupled to the understanding of the mechanisms that link the loss of TSC1 (9q34)

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor of the uterus: report of four cases.

Uterine perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is very rare, and there have been only 27 reported cases. The differentiation of the tumor has been enigmatic, and the biologic behavior remains unclear. This study describes the clinical, histologic, and immunohistochemical features of four cases of uterine PEComa. The patients were 30, 32, 36, and 40 years old, and none of them had tuberous sclerosis complex. The size of the tumors ranged from 1 to 30 cm in diameter, and 3 of the 4 tumors were confined in the uterus. One tumor involved the left ovary and omentum. Microscopically, the tumor
