BACKGROUND: Hippotherapy (HPOT) is a physical therapy (PT) treatment tool using equine movement to improve mobility for children with movement impairments. Although research suggests HPOT improves body structure and function, there is limited evidence regarding its impact on activity and participation outcomes in a clinical setting. The Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory Computer Adaptive Test (PEDI-CAT) may be useful in HPOT settings to highlight changes in activity and participation.
PURPOSE: 1) Evaluate the PEDI-CAT's sensitivity to changes in activity and participation among chi

Equine assisted activities (hippotherapy and therapeutic riding) improve balance in patients with disabilities such as cerebral palsy, but have not been systematically studied in older adults, at risk of falls due to balance deficits. We conducted a 10-week, single blind, controlled trial of the effect of a therapeutic horseback riding course on measures of balance in community-dwelling adults 65 years and older. Nine riders and six controls completed the trial. Controls were age matched to riders and all participants were recruited from the local community. Both groups showed improvements in

Pink t-shirts that proclaim "My horse is my therapist" are for sale in a wide variety of horse-sport catalogues. Literature on the healing power of human-nonhuman animal encounters and the practice of a variety of animal-assisted therapy programs, such as hippotherapy and equine-facilitated therapy, show dramatic growth over the last 30 years. Less attention is paid to the role that horse-human interactions may play in more popular accountings of well-being and impairment among a sample of everyday riders. Analysis of 50 lifecycle narratives, collected from accomplished but nonprofessional equ

BACKGROUND: Cerebrally palsied children demonstrated limited independence while performing various activities of daily living, which is due to disorders of postural control. The best solution to improve postural control is the use of therapies that simultaneously focus on the sense of balance and motor skills. Such possibilities for patients with cerebral palsy are offered, for example, by hippotherapy.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the influence of hippotherapy on body balance in the sitting position among children with cerebral palsy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study enrolled thirty-nine children ag

Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is an inherited condition marked by joint hypermobility, instability, chronic pain and fatigue, significantly impacting quality of life and autonomy. Management focuses solely on symptom alleviation. After experiencing a rapid decline in functional abilities, a patient in late adolescence with hypermobile EDS underwent hippotherapy rehabilitation (30 hours). She saw substantial improvements in fatigue, chronic pain and regained walking abilities. Hippotherapy played a crucial role in refining her postural balance, motor skills, proprioception, muscle fu

BACKGROUND: A good therapeutic relationship is a strong predictor of successful treatment in addiction and other psychological illness. Recent studies of horse-assisted therapy (HAT) have drawn attention to the importance of the client's relationship to the horse in psychotherapy. Few have reported on the patient's own perspective and none have reported specifically on the human-horse relationship in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and its implications for health and well-being.
AIM: This article explores SUD patients' own experience of their relationship with the horse and their perce

BACKGROUND: Spastic cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common type of CP. Hip adductor spasticity leads to discomfort, stiffness, and difficulties in doing physical activities such as sitting, transfer, and walking. Management of hip adductor spasticity is still a challenge in the field of rehabilitation. Horse riding simulator (HRS) has been reported to have beneficial effects on spasticity, postural control, and motor function in children with spastic CP.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine the immediate effect of HRS on adductor spasticity in children with CP.
METHODS: Twenty-fo

One hallmark of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is the ability to differentiate into multiple tissue types which assists in tissue regeneration. Another hallmark of MSCs is their potent anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties and the potential to treat inflammatory, immune-mediated, and ischemic conditions. In equine practice, MSCs have shown efficacy in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders such as tendinopathy, meniscal tears and cartilage injury. However, there are many equine disease processes and conditions that may benefit from the immunomodulatory properties of MSCs. Exampl

This study aimed to determine the load-bearing capacity of trotting Kiso horses using gait analysis. Ten Kiso horses with a height at withers of 128 cm were included. Their riders were fitted with a marker (70 mm in diameter placed on their chest) recorded by two digital DVD cameras while trotting along a short, straight course. In total, eight tests were performed for each horse: the first with a 70 kg load; six with randomly loaded weights ranging 80-130 kg; and then a final test again with a 70 kg load. Three-dimensional movement of the marker was analyzed using a motion capture system. The

People with neurological disorders suffer from poor mobility, poor balance, fatigue, isolation and monotonous everyday activities. Studies show that equine-assisted interventions can improve their mobility and balance, but could these kinds of interventions also increase participants' activity repertoire and self-assessed health, and reduce their fatigue? The study was conducted as a prospective, controlled study with three cohorts followed for one year: intervention group (n = 14), control group Passive (n = 29), and control group Active (n = 147). Participants in the study were affected by n

A prevailing rationale for equine assisted therapies is that the motion of a horse can provide sensory stimulus and movement patterns that mimic those of natural human activities such as walking. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively measure and compare human pelvis motions when walking to those when riding a horse. Six able-bodied children (inexperienced riders, 8-12years old) participated in over-ground trials of self-paced walking and leader-paced riding on four different horses. Five kinematic measures were extracted from three-dimensional pelvis motion data: anteroposterior, sup

Taking into account the biomechanical peculiarities of ridetherapy, the specific methodology of ridetherapy developed by us is given in this paper, also the data of treatment have been studied in the dynamics. Based on the results obtained the reliable advantage of ridetherapy method is determined as compared with therapeutic exercises. It has been established that in children with benign joint hypermobility syndrome during articulatory changes in the knee the use of ridetherapy provides an increase in muscle strength, to a certain degree their hypertrophy, the development of joint-muscular pe

INTRODUCTION: Access to the equine cecum is required for various therapeutic and experimental procedures, including decompression, fluid therapy, and transfaunation. Traditional approaches via laparotomy are highly invasive. This study aimed to describe a minimally invasive, laparoscopically assisted technique for cecal cannulation in standing horses.
METHODS: Seven horses underwent the procedure under sedation and paravertebral anesthesia. Two right flank accesses were created: a 10-mm laparoscopic port for visualization and a 2-cm minilaparotomy for cecal exteriorization. A Foley catheter w
