Bromocriptine, lergotrile and lisuride but not apomorphine, ergonovine or lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) mimicked clonidine in rats trained to discriminate this compound (0.02 mg/kg) from saline. Three ergot derivatives, lisuride, lergotrile and bromocriptine, given to rats trained to eat 4 h a day, induced a dose- and time-related anorexia. They were more potent in this context than either amphetamine or fenfluramine. This is the first double-blind study in outpatients to evaluate the effectiveness of dihydrogenated ergot alkaloids (DEA) (Hydergine) versus papaverine in the treatment of selected symptoms associated with mental aging. In addition, this is the first study comparing these two pharmacologic agents in relatively young geriatric patients, with a mean age in the mid-sixties. Over 1200 heavy feedlot cattle presented with severe tongue lesions during a 7-month interval. Review of the literature and discussions with colleagues revealed previous similar outbreaks had occurred in Canada and the USA, with extensive investigations conducted and no cause identified. Many substances in the tall fescue/endophyte association (Schedonorus arundinaceus/Epichloë coenophiala) have biological activity. Medication overuse headache (MOH, formerly known as drug-induced headache) is a well known disorder following the frequent use of analgesics or any other antiheadache drug including serotonin 5-HT(1B/D) agonists (triptans).
