[Aplastic crises in hereditary spherocytosis].

Parvovirus B19-infections are diagnosed with increasing frequency. In addition to erythema infectiosum they cause a temporary red cell aplasia of 5-10 days duration, in patients with hemolytic anemia an aplastic crisis as demonstrated in 5 patients with hereditary spherocytosis. In every case an acute infection by parvovirus B19 could be diagnosed. Hemoglobin concentrations dropped to 4.0-6.2 g/dl, reticulocytes were diminished to 0-25,000/microliters. In every case there followed a complete recovery of erythropoiesis after 2-3 days.

Parvovirus infections in childhood.

Human parvovirus (HPV) infections have been associated with several clinical syndromes. The virus is the etiologic agent of erythema infectiosum (fifth disease) and the primary cause of aplastic crises in children with sickle cell disease and other hemolytic anemias. Some individuals with an acute symmetric polyarthritis were found to have a recent HPV infection. Although two stillborn infants with proved HPV infections have been identified, the exact relationship among HPV, intrauterine infection, and subsequent fetal damage requires further research.

Infection with human parvovirus (B19), aplasia of the bone marrow and a rash in hereditary spherocytosis.

Infection with human parvovirus (HPV) B19 was diagnosed in persons with hereditary spherocytosis during an outbreak of erythema infectiosum. A 10-year-old boy had an aplastic crisis of the bone marrow and a maculopapular rash. His mother also had an aplastic crisis, fever, rash and a transiently acellular marrow. Another boy had an aplastic crisis, leucopenia and fever, but did not have a rash. Aplastic crisis and a rash have rarely before been observed together and attributed to infection with HPV.

[Association of non-immunologically-induced hydrops fetalis with Parvovirus B19 infection].

Five weeks after the onset of clinical symptoms of erythema infectiosum, a 24 year old pregnant woman, gravida I, para 0, suffered a hydrops fetalis which resulted in fetal loss. The maternal infection with the human parvovirus B19 could be confirmed serologically with ELISA and immunoblot by detecting specific IgM antibodies against B19. In an amniotic sample of the fetus Parvovirus B19 DNA could be detected by hybridisation. Fetal loss was obviously due to a parvovirus B19 infection of the mother and the fetus.

Influence of anti-coronavirus disease 2019 policies on 10 pediatric infectious diseases.

BACKGROUND: To combat the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, many countries, including Japan, implemented policies limiting social activities and encouraging preventive behaviors. This study examines the influence of such policies on the trends of 10 infectious pediatric diseases: pharyngoconjunctival fever; group A streptococcal pharyngitis; infectious gastroenteritis; chickenpox; erythema infectiosum; hand, foot, and mouth disease; herpangina; respiratory syncytial virus; exanthem subitum; and mumps. METHODS: The research adopted a retrospective cohort study design. We collected data from J

[Various clinical symptoms in human parvovirus B19 infection].

Human parvovirus B19 infection causes erythema infectiosum in child, aplastic crisis in patients with chronic hemolytic anemia, chronic pure red cell aplasia in immunocompromised patients and hydrops fetalis. Human parvovirus B19 causes arthritis and acute glomerulonephritis due to immunological mechanism. Other disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, vasculitis and thrombotic microangiopathy, are linked in human parvovirus B19 infection. Parvovirus B19 infection causes choronic rheumatoid-like arthropathy. Autoantibody and low complement were seen in acute human parvovirus infection, and parvovirus

Infection with Parvovirus B19.

Human parvovirus B19 is common and widespread. Major manifestations of B19 infection are transient aplastic crisis, erythema infectiosum, hydrops fetalis, acute and chronic rheumatoid-like arthropathy and, in the immunocompromised host, chronic or recurrent bone marrow infection. Less common presentations include skin eruptions, isolated cytopenias, vasculitis, hepatitis, and neuropathies. Increasing awareness of the clinical manifestations of B19 infection makes parvovirus B19 an emerging virus. B19 may persist in healthy or immunocompromised individuals. B19 has been suggested as a candidate

Papular-purpuric "gloves and socks" syndrome caused by parvovirus B19.

This paper presents a 15-year-old boy with an acute febrile illness accompanied by purpuric and papular lesions located mostly on the dorsal areas of his hands and feet with the additional changes on his knees and elbows. Serologic studies confirmed the acute infection by parvovirus B19. Apart from mild leukocytosis there were no other abnormalities in hematologic and laboratory findings. The diagnosis of papular-purpuric "gloves and socks" syndrome (PPGSS) was made. Cutaneous changes completely resolved two weeks later. Herein the patient's condition was described together with a brief overvi

[Atypical involvement of purpuric syndrome caused by parvovirus B19. Case report in a 12-year-old female].

Parvovirus B19 is the cause of a variety of exanthematous diseases during childhood and adolescence, such as erythema infectiosum and papular purpuric gloves and socks syndrome. This is an unusual, benign and acute acrodermatitis. Aphtous stomatitis, fever and other systemic symptoms can be associated with the eruption of the purpuric rash. Uncommon patterns such as asymmetrical distribution or erythematous involvement llave recently been described as additional features of PVB19-associated purpuric petechial eruption. This is a case report of a 12-year-old female with an atypical involvement

Severe ataxia as a complication of human parvovirus B19 acute encephalitis in a child.

Human parvovirus B19 generally causes erythema infectiosum in childhood, but it can be associated with unusual findings, particularly in immunocompromised patients. This is a report about an immunocompetent 4-year-old female child affected with acute encephalitis by parvovirus B19, documented by polymerase chain reaction performed on cerebrospinal fluid, who was treated with intravenous immunoglobulins and dexamethasone and who developed a cerebellar syndrome with ataxia, dysmetria, and dysarthria. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this may be the first report of human parvovirus B19 ence

[Cutaneous manifestations of parvovirus B19 infection].

The human parvovirus B19 is a small single-strand DNA virus with specific tropism for the membranous receptor P expressed on erythrocytes and endothelial cells. About 60 - 70 % of the adult population is parvovirus B19 seropositive. The contamination usually occurs through droplets from the nasopharyngeal airways. The major systemic infections present as episodes of aplastic anemia and development of hydrops fetalis. Arthropathies, encephalitis, or glomerulonephritis are less frequently encountered. This review focuses on its cutaneous manifestations including erythema infectiosum, and the pur

Acute polyarthritis. Fifth disease passed from child to adult.

Physicians are familiar with the "slapped cheek" rash seen in childhood cases of erythema infectiosum. Less well known is that infection with its pathogen, parvovirus B19, often becomes manifest in adults as acute viral arthropathy. In evaluation of suspected cases, a complete blood cell count and blood chemistry profile are useful additions to thorough history taking and physical examination. Differential diagnosis includes Lyme disease, other viral infections, acute rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and psoriatic arthritis. Treatment is symptomatic with nonsteroidal anti-in

Refractory status epilepticus owing to human parvovirus B19 encephalitis in a child.

Human parvovirus B19 is the agent that causes erythema infectiosum (fifth disease), a disease that is generally benign and self-limiting. This virus also is associated with severe disease in hemolytic or immunocompromised patients. It rarely causes meningoencephalitis in healthy children. Herein we present the case of a 10-year-old healthy girl with refractory status epilepticus possibly owing to human parvovirus B19 encephalitis who was successfully treated with high-dose corticosteroids. To our knowledge, this is the first report of human parvovirus B19 encephalitis complicated by refractory

A Case of Leukocytoclastic Vasculitis Related to Acute Parvovirus B19 Infection.

Parvovirus B19 (PVB19) infection can cause various clinical presentations. While mostly erythema infectiosum, transient aplastic crisis, and fetal hydrops are seen, it rarely causes myocarditis, hepatitis, or vasculitis. We report a patient admitted with fever, fatigue, arthralgia, and rash. Although there was no aetiological clue in the first-line studies, the tests were repeated because of clinical suspicion. Therefore, >4-fold increase in PVB19 IgM titer, IgG seroconversion, and pathological findings led to the diagnosis of leukocytoclastic vasculitis (LCV) related to PVB19. We aimed to emp

Classical Juvenile Pityriasis Rubra Pilaris Treated With Secukinumab: Case Report and a Review of Biological Treatments in the Pediatric Population.

Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a rare, chronic papulosquamous disorder with limited treatment options in pediatric patients. We report the case of a 9-year-old boy with juvenile PRP (type III), who achieved complete disease remission after treatment with secukinumab, an IL-17A inhibitor, following initial therapeutic resistance to topical agents. This case, notable for PRP onset after erythema infectiosum, highlights a potential infectious trigger and the therapeutic benefit of targeting the IL-17A pathway in PRP. Our findings support further exploration of secukinumab as a treatment option

Healthcare-Associated Transmission of Parvovirus B19 Arthropathy.

Human parvovirus B19 (B19V) is well known for its infectivity. However, the risk for communicability to previously unexposed healthcare professionals is controversial. We report here a small outbreak of B19V infection among physicians and family members in an adult rheumatology practice that occurred after providing care for a patient with B19V arthropathy. As B19V-infected patients who demonstrate findings of erythema infectiosum or viral arthritis are generally beyond the period of transmissability, strict handwashing and droplet precautions remain imperative when there is contact with poten

Human parvovirus B19-induced vesiculopustular skin eruption.

Erythema infectiosum, fifth disease, is a usually benign macular or maculopapular exanthem of childhood caused by the human parvovirus B19. A 27-year-old woman with a serologically documented human parvovirus infection who presented with a hemorrhagic exanthem and enanthem with areas of pustules and pseudo-pustules is described. The histologic findings were unusual because they combined the histologic features of morbilliform and vesiculopustular viral lesions. This case serves to underscore the occurrence of human parvovirus infection in adults. Further, it demonstrates the need to include pa
