The low doses of neuroleptics restored the ability of 1-DOPA treated rats to escape behaviour from acute stress situation (in the extrapolation escape test). Non-antipsychotic benzamides and phenothiazine, antidepressants and benzodiazepine tranquilizers were inactive. On the whole, the effectiveness of neuroleptics was in accordance with clinical data. The loss of ability to escape in 1-DOPA treated rats was accompanied by stereotypes hyperlocomotion in the water. Various psychotropic drugs decreased only hyperactivity without the influence on escape behaviour. Both forms of behavioral pathol

Predation risk can strongly influence the evolution of reproductive tactics because behaviours that enhance mating success often increase vulnerability to predators. Males of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, exhibit distinct reproductive tactics, including fighting and sneaking, as a conditional strategy. We investigated whether escape behaviour in response to predation risk differs between fighter and sneaker males during precopulatory mate guarding. To examine responses to different predator-associated cues, we introduced different developmental stages (adult female, deutony

Sappho has always been regarded as one of the greatest lyric poets of ancient Greece. Her famous poem Fragment 31 V., also known as the "Ode to Jealousy", accurately describes the profound emotional reaction triggered by the sight of her beloved. The poet's precise description of each sign and symptom triggered by this arousal makes Sappho 31 V., to the best of our knowledge, the first analytical description of the acute stress response, the so-called "fight-or-flight" response, in human history. Here, Fragment 31 V. is re-read from a medical point of view, correlating the ancient Greek lyric

The purpose of this study was to analyze the associations among fluctuating asymmetry, duration of tonic immobility, and flight performance or ease of capture in chickens. Cocks (n = 220; 36 wk old) from 10 Spanish breeds and a White Leghorn population were used. The quantitative/qualitative relationship among fluctuating asymmetry, duration of tonic immobility, and landing accuracy (good or bad) or landing distance (long or short), and the quantitative/quantitative relationship among fluctuating asymmetry, duration of tonic immobility, and time of capture or number of attempts of capture were

Hyperventilation (HV) is often considered part of a defense response, implying an unpleasant emotion (negative valence) combined with a strong action tendency (high arousal). In this study, we investigated the importance of arousal and valence as triggers for HV responses. Forty women imagined eight different scripts varying along the arousal and valence dimensions. The scripts depicted relaxation, fear, depressive, action, and desire situations. After each trial, the imagery was rated for valence, arousal, and vividness. FetCO2, inspiratory and expiratory time, tidal volume, and pulse rate we

Mild hypertension is the most difficult type of hypertension do diagnose in clinical practice due to the great variability of blood pressure and to the alert reaction. There is evidence that overdiagnosis and overtreatment of mild hypertension are a common finding. We suggest that more baseline readings should be obtained before establishing the diagnosis. Also an individualized approach should be used and in selected cases, the 24-hour blood pressure monitoring can be useful.

Interference with activity of numerous cerebral structures produces memory deficiencies; in many instances, however, when animals are over-trained such interference becomes innocuous. Systemic administration of protein synthesis inhibitors impairs long-term retention; this effect has been interpreted to mean that protein synthesis is required for memory consolidation, though little is known about the effect of protein synthesis inhibitors on memory of enhanced learning in the rat. To further analyze the protective effect of enhanced learning against amnesic treatments, groups of Wistar rats we

Productive initiation on the escape rate-limited T5 phage N25 promoter is subject to substantial modulation by the initial transcribed sequence (ITS). It is further compromised by the formation of two classes of open complexes-productive and unproductive. To decipher their roles, we performed single-cycle transcription assays under RNA polymerase (RNAP)-limiting conditions to quantitatively determine the rate of promoter escape and the productive fraction of RNAP open complexes formed at four N25-ITS variant promoters. Each promoter variant was transcribed from three different template conform

BACKGROUND: Breakthrough hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections continue to be reported among vaccinated children in endemic settings. Although viral escape mutations are often suspected, delayed neonatal immunoprophylaxis and vertical transmission remain important but under-investigated mechanisms. Whole-genome sequencing provides an opportunity to distinguish between these competing explanations and strengthen molecular surveillance.
OBJECTIVES: This case report describes the molecular characterization of HBV isolated from a vaccinated Nigerian child with breakthrough hepatitis B surface antige

BACKGROUND: There is increasing concern that persistent infection of SARS-CoV-2 within immunocompromised hosts could serve as a reservoir for mutation accumulation and subsequent emergence of novel strains with the potential to evade immune responses.
METHODS: We describe three patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia who were persistently positive for SARS-CoV-2 by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Viral viability from longitudinally-collected specimens was assessed. Whole-genome sequencing and serological studies were performed to measure viral evolution and evidence of immune escape.

Chiral active Brownian particles (CABPs) are self-propelled agents with intrinsic rotational dynamics, giving rise to circular trajectories commonly observed in biological and synthetic microswimmers. Understanding how CABPs explore confined environments and locate targets is crucial for characterizing transport, search efficiency, and reaction processes in physical and biological systems. We study the escape dynamics of CABPs from one- and two-dimensional confined domains. In one dimension, we consider intervals with either two absorbing boundaries or a reflecting boundary on one side and an

In a previous study, we showed that exposure of rats to a one-week environmental enrichment (EE) protocol decreases elevated T-maze (ETM) avoidance responses, an anxiolytic-like effect, without altering escape reactions, in clinical terms related to panic disorder. These anxiolytic-like effects were followed by decreased delta FosB-immunoreactivity (delta FosB-ir) in the cingulate cortex, dorsolateral and intermediate lateral septum, hippocampus (cornus of Ammon), anterior and dorsomedial hypothalamus, medial and basolateral amygdala and ventral region of the dorsal raphe nucleus. The purpose

Analyses of the behavioral reactions of rodents to predators have greatly contributed to the understanding of defense-related human psychopathologies such as anxiety and panic. We here investigated the behavioral consequences of exposing male Wistar rats to a live cat using the elevated T-maze test of anxiety. This test allows the measurement of two defensive responses: inhibitory avoidance and escape, which in terms of pathology have been associated with generalized anxiety and panic disorders, respectively. For comparative reasons, the effects of exposure to the cat were also assessed in the

Brain aging can cause cognitive and motor disabilities which often correlate with changes in dendritic branch, axon collateral, and synapse numbers. However, from invertebrates to mammals, age-related decline is typically restricted to specific neuron types or brain parts, indicating differential vulnerability. The rules to pinpoint the susceptibility of distinct brain elements to aging remain largely unknown. Here, we combine longitudinal studies with neuroanatomical, electrophysiological, and optophysiological analyses in the Drosophila genetic model to identify aging-susceptible and aging-r

Fish generally perform routine swimming behaviors during food digestion; thus, changes in swimming performance and adjustments to spontaneous behavior resulting from digestion can have important ecological significance for wild fishes. The effects of feeding on metabolism, spontaneous activity, fast-start escape movement, and critical swimming speed (U crit) were investigated in five cyprinids with different habitat preferences, specifically the Chinese crucian carp (Carassius auratus), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), black carp (Mylopharyngodon piceus), Chinese bream (Parabramis pekinensis), a

Hosts may defend themselves against parasitism through a wide variety of defence mechanisms, but due to finite resources, investment in one defence mechanism may trade-off with investment in another mechanism. We studied resistance strategies against the parasitoid wasp Leptopilina boulardi in two Drosophila species. We found that D. melanogaster had significantly lower physiological resistance against L. boulardi than D. simulans, and hypothesized that D. melanogaster might instead invest more heavily in other forms of defence, such as behavioural defence. We found that when given a choice be

The acoustic startle/escape response is a phylogenetically widespread behavioral act, provoked by an intense, unexpected sound. At least six orders of insects have evolved tympanate ears that serve acoustic behavior that ranges from sexual communication to predator detection. Insects that fly at night are vulnerable to predation by insectivorous bats that detect and locate their prey by using biosonar signals. Of the six orders of insects that possess tympanate hearing organs, four contain species that fly at night and, in these, hearing is sensitive to a range of ultrasonic frequencies found

Some studies have reported that stimulation of the superior colliculus in rats produces orienting responses, as it does in a number of species. However, other studies have reported movements resembling avoidance and escape, which are not characteristic of collicular stimulation in other mammals. This apparent discrepancy was investigated by systematically recording the effects on head and body movements of electrical stimulation at a large number of sites throughout the superior colliculus (SC) and surrounding structures. It was found that the nature of the movements observed depended on the l
