Atypical SARS and Escherichia coli bacteremia.

We describe a patient with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) whose clinical symptoms were masked by Escherichia coli bacteremia. SARS developed in a cluster of healthcare workers who had contact with this patient. SARS was diagnosed when a chest infiltrate developed and when the patient's brother was hospitalized with acute respiratory failure. We highlight problems in atypical cases and offer infection control suggestions.

Escherichia coli myonecrosis in alcoholic cirrhosis.

The risk of bacteremia in patients with cirrhosis increases with more advanced Child classification. Escherichia coli is the most frequently implicated organism in these bacteremic episodes. Unusually, E. coli can produce a bullous cellulitis or myonecrosis. Two previous cases of E. coli-associated myonecrosis in patients with cirrhosis have been reported. We describe a third case in a cirrhotic patient with E. coli-associated bilateral lower extremity gas gangrene and review the existing literature. In the three patients with cirrhosis and E. coli myonecrosis, no obvious gastrointestinal perf

[Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7 infection].

Infections in the digestive tract are due to multiple organism, which cause different syndromes. Escherichia coli O157:H7, already identified as a human pathogen in 1982, has been recognised as a major public health issue, being responsible for sporadic and epidemic cases of haemorrhagic colitis, often associated, in children and elderly, with the haemolytic uraemic syndrome. E. coli O157:H7 infection may occur everywhere, but is more frequent in North Europe, Canada, USA, Argentina and Japan, with annual incidence rates of 8 per 100,000 population. In Italy until 1997 the Italian National Ins

[Enteroinvasive Escherichia coli. Pathogenesis and epidemiology].

Enteroinvasive Escherichia coli (EIEC) is an intestinal pathogen causing enteritis, with a similar pathogenic mechanism to that of Shigella, which causes an epithelial invasion of the large bowel leading to inflammation and ulceration of the mucosa. The patients often develop the symptoms of bacillary dysentery. The EIEC strains are atypical in their biochemical reactions and may ferment lactose late or not at all, are lysine decarboxilase negative, and non motile. In addition, most EIEC strains express somatic antigens which are either strongly related or identical to Shigella antigens. EIEC

Verotoxic Escherichia coli in human disease.

Verotoxin-producing E. coli (most frequently E. coli O157) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of diarrhea, hemorrhagic colitis, hemolytic uremic syndrome and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. Cattle, meat products, and other sources have been found to harbor these organisms. Isolation of E. coli O157:H7 on MacConkey-sorbitol agar is diagnostic, yet the bacteria are difficult to detect after the first week of infection. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) can detect verotoxin in fecal filtrates in the absence of viable bacteria. Serologic evidence has also been used to support

Mating aggregates in Escherichia coli conjugation.

Mating mixtures of Escherichia coli cells were shown to contain mating aggregates of two to 20 cells each rather than only mating pairs of two cells each. The mating aggregate size distribution shows two broad peaks, at two to four cells and at eight to 13 cells. The quantitative mating aggregate size distribution and the proportion of male cells in mating aggregates are dependent on the input ratio of male to female cells. At an input ratio of one to one, the average mating aggregate contains equal proportions of male and female cells and most of the cells involved in mating are in large aggr

Isolation, Characterization, and Complete Genome Sequence of Escherichia Phage KIT06 Which Infects Nalidixic Acid-Resistant Escherichia coli.

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is one of the most common sources of infection in humans and animals. The emergence of E. coli which acquires resistance to various antibiotics has made treatment difficult. Bacteriophages can be considered promising agents to expand the options for the treatment of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This study describes the isolation and characterization of Escherichia phage KIT06, which can infect E. coli resistant to the quinolone antibiotic nalidixic acid. Phage virions possess an icosahedral head that is 93 ± 8 nm in diameter and a contractile tail (116 ± 12 nm × 13

Human enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) infections elicit antibodies that broadly neutralize mucinases of pathogenic Escherichia coli and Shigella.

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) and Shigella are the most common bacterial diarrheal pathogens among young children of low-middle income regions. Enteric pathogens must overcome formidable host defenses, including the protective barrier formed by intestinal mucus. ETEC produce a virulence protein called EatA, a member of the Serine Protease Autotransporter of the Enterobacteriae (SPATE) family, where the secreted passenger domain (EatAp) specifically degrades MUC2, the major mucus secreted by goblet cells of the human intestine. Notably, some Shigella spp., as well as other diarrheagen

Escherichia coli-infected cephalohematoma in an infant.

We report a case of Escherichia coli infection of a cephalohematoma in an infant delivered by vacuum extraction. After excluding potential complications, the patient was treated with intravenous ceftriaxone while hospitalized followed by oral cephalexin after discharge. Infection is a rare but serious complication of cephalohematomas in the newborn period. Escherichia coli is the most common pathogen responsible for infected cephalohematomas. Clinicians should be aware that infected cephalohematomas may be complicated by sepsis, meningitis, or osteomyelitis.

The Biology of the Escherichia coli Extracellular Matrix.

Escherichia coli is one of the world's best-characterized organisms, because it has been extensively studied for over a century. However, most of this work has focused on E. coli grown under laboratory conditions that do not faithfully simulate its natural environments. Therefore, the historical perspectives on E. coli physiology and life cycle are somewhat skewed toward experimental systems that feature E. coli growing logarithmically in a test tube. Typically a commensal bacterium, E. coli resides in the lower intestines of a slew of animals. Outside of the lower intestine, E. coli can adapt

The rise and rise of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli.

First described in 1885, Escherichia coli gradually achieved recognition as a cause of diarrhoea. Strains of E. coli which belonged to a limited number of O-serogroups and had been associated with outbreaks of diarrhoea in hospitalised children were designated 'enteropathogenic' E. coli (EPEC) to distinguish them from E. coli strains that cause other types of infection. The discovery that some strains of E. coli can produce toxins or invade epithelial cells in a similar fashion to established pathogens, such as Vibrio cholerae and Shigella species, shed new light on E. coli virulence. As EPEC

Escherichia coli: on-farm contamination of animals.

Escherichia coli is one of the main inhabitants of the intestinal tract of most mammalian species, including humans, and birds. Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), also called verotoxinogenic E. coli, usually do not cause disease in animals but may cause watery diarrhoea, haemorrhagic colitis, and/or haemolytic uraemic syndrome in humans. Zoonotic STEC include the O157:H7 strains and, with increasing frequency, certain non-O157 strains. The importance of non-O157 zoonotic strains is probably underestimated as they have been less well characterised and are more difficult to detect in samples

Pneumonia with bacteraemia due to Escherichia coli.

Pneumonia due to Escherichia coli (E. coli) has a reported mortality of up to 70 per cent. Most infections are associated with underlying disease, and follow bacteraemia from a genitourinary or gastrointestinal source. This report describes two patients with bacteraemic E. coli pneumonia, presumed secondary to aspiration of E. coli from the oropharynx. Both patients presented a rapidly progressive illness with hypotension. Response of the pneumonia to early, appropriate antimicrobial therapy, was complete. Our cases are discussed with particular reference to clinical features of the infection

Response of gnotobiotic pigs to Escherichia coli.

In a study of the response of gnotobiotic pigs to coliform infections, 45 one-week-old germfree pigs were divided into five groups and each group was inoculated orally with a different strain of Escherichia coli. Three of these were enteropathogenic swine strains, P307[08:K87(B), K88 a,b (L):H19]; P570 [0138:K81]; P568[0141:K85a,b(B), K88a,b(L):H4], one was a virulent human strain, H224, [026:K60(B6)], and one was a non-enteropathogenic swine strain, P581[OX13:K68]. It was attempted to protect a portion of the pigs with orally administered specific antisera and sera from non-immunized specific

Comparison of phylogenetic and virulence factors between Escherichia coli isolated from biliary tract infections and uropathogenic Escherichia coli.

Escherichia coli is a gram-negative intestinal commensal that can also cause various infections, including urinary tract infections, biliary tract infections, neonatal meningitis, and septicemia. Although the characteristics of uropathogenic E. coli and the mechanisms of urinary tract infection have been well studied, the genetic distinctions among E. coli isolates from different types of infections have not yet been determined. This study compared the phylogenetic and virulence factors of E. coli isolates from bacteremic biliary tract infections with those from bacteremic urinary tract infect

Epidemiology and pathogenesis of enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coil.

Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) cause diarrhoea, haemorrhagic colitis and the haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS). EHEC cause sporadic, epidemic, and occasionally fatal infections in Germany and worldwide. The most probable natural reservoirs of EHEC are domestic cattle (in which these organisms cause no disease), but wild animals also excrete EHEC asymptomatically. Humans (chiefly children) acquire EHEC from contact with animals (e. g. in petting zoos) or indirectly, by consuming food or water contaminated with these pathogens. Acid resistant EHEC survive the acidic human stomach, co
