Ethical Considerations in Handling Victims of Sexual Violence: Collaborative Role of Nurses and Forensic Experts.

BACKGROUND: Sexual violence is a major public health and medicolegal concern. Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) collaborate with law enforcement, crime laboratory analysts, victim advocates, and prosecutors, creating ethical tensions between survivor-centered care and forensic obligations, with trauma-informed, patient-centered care as the primary clinical commitment. AIM: To provide an ethical analysis structured around the four biomedical principles, autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice, to guide clinical decision-making in sexual assault care. METHODS: A narrative revi

Organ Donation After Circulatory Death and Before Death: Ethical Questions and Nursing Implications.

Scientific advances have enabled thousands of individuals to extend their lives through organ donation. Yet, shortfalls of available organs persist, and individuals in the United States die daily before they receive what might have been lifesaving organs. For years, the legal foundation of organ donation in the United States has been known as the Dead Donor Rule, requiring death to be defined for organ donation purposes by either a cardiac standard (termination of the heartbeat) or a neurological one (cessation of all brain function). In this context, one solution used by an increasing number

Adherence in paediatric renal failure and dialysis: an ethical analysis of nurses' attitudes and reported practice.

Minors have difficulty adhering to the strict management regimen required whilst on renal dialysis for chronic renal failure. This leads to ethical tensions as healthcare professionals (HCPs) and parents try, in the minor's best interests, to ensure s/he adheres. All 11 dialysis nurses working in a large, regional paediatric dialysis unit were interviewed about their perceptions and management of non-adherence and the ethical issues this raised for them. Participants reported negative attitudes to non-adherence alongside sympathy and feelings of frustration. They discussed the competing respon

Knowledge and Attitude on Ethical Conduct of Clinical Research Among Nurses Working in the University Hospital of Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Nurses are pivotal in primary healthcare and often serve as the first point of patient contact. Delivering evidence-based care is essential for ensuring high-quality services. Clinical research in hospital settings provides the evidence base that supports such care. This study aimed to assess nurses' knowledge of clinical research ethics and their attitudes toward conducting research at a university hospital. METHODS: A pretested semi-structured questionnaire, developed from literature and expert input, was used to collect data on demographics, research knowledge, and attitudes to

Influence of nursing interns' moral sensitivity on patient safety competency: The mediating effect of ethical action.

BACKGROUND: Nursing interns play a dual role in clinical practice, acting as both potential risks to and defenders of patient safety. Although moral sensitivity is recognized as a foundational element for patient safety, the specific mechanism translating it into actual safety competency, particularly the mediating role of ethical action, remains underexplored. AIM: To examine the mediating effect of ethical action on the relationship between moral sensitivity and patient safety competency among nursing interns. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was reported following the Strengthening the Re

Reflective Writing to Support Nursing Students' Ethical Understanding of End-of-Life Care: A Phenomenological Study.

End-of-life care requires nurses to integrate ethical sensitivity, emotional presence, and effective communication. Reflective writing, a key component of Narrative Medicine, offers nursing students a structured method to process complex emotional experiences and deepen their ethical understanding. This study investigated how third-year nursing students reflected on ethical issues and emotional responses related to end-of-life care through a structured reflective writing activity conducted after a film-based educational session. A qualitative phenomenological approach was applied to analyze 55

Nurses' negative affective states, moral disengagement, and knowledge hiding: The moderating role of ethical leadership.

AIM: This study aims to investigate the influence of nurses' negative affective states on their knowledge-hiding behaviours through moral disengagement, and especially the moderating role of ethical leadership. BACKGROUND: Researchers have paid much attention to the harmfulness of knowledge hiding, yet the mechanisms of why and how nurses' negative affective states have an impact on their knowledge-hiding behaviours are less clear. METHOD: Two different questionnaire surveys were used in two different studies. In Study 1, a research design with three stages, including 323 nurses (64.47% resp

Ethical challenges in the care of older people and risk of being burned out among male nurses.

AIM: The aim of this study was to illuminate the meaning of being in ethically difficult situations when caring for older people, as experienced by male nurses. BACKGROUND: Nurses and physicians are frequently faced with ethical issues and challenges in their work with older people in hospitals. Male nurses are a minority group in the nursing profession, thus it is important to listen to their lived experiences of the ethical challenges they are faced with in their work. METHOD: The study is part of a comprehensive investigation into the narratives of female and male physicians and nurses, c

AIM: To critically examine problematic smartphone use in clinical nursing practice and to reframe it as an ethical, organisational and leadership challenge requiring system-level governance rather than individual behavioural regulation. DESIGN: Position paper. METHODS: A narrative, evidence-informed synthesis was undertaken using a structured search of CINAHL, MEDLINE via PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science, supplemented by Google Scholar and purposive identification of professional, regulatory and governance sources. Beyond protocols: the "double burden" and ethical dilemmas of nursing home professionals facing hurricane risk.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Climate change is intensifying hurricane threats to insular territories, with nursing homes facing particular challenges in protecting vulnerable residents. Recent evidence demonstrates increased mortality and hospitalization among nursing home residents following hurricane exposure; significant gaps persist between formal planning and operational reality in long-term care facilities. To explore nursing home professionals' perceptions and practices facing hurricane risk in Guadeloupe, and identify factors influencing organizational resilience and emergency preparedne

The Role of Nurses at the Intersection of Palliative Care and Death Tourism: Global Ethical Dilemmas and Professional Preparedness.

Throughout history, end-of-life has posed profound ethical and emotional challenges. Today, the growing desire for control has led to two interconnected phenomena: death tourism and palliative care. Hopelessness and loss of control drive some patients to seek euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide abroad, especially where these practices are illegal in their home countries. For them, this difficult decision represents reclaiming agency in the face of unbearable suffering. In contrast, palliative care provides an alternative focused on improving quality of life for patients with life-threaten

"Doing the right thing": Moral conflicts and ethical issues experienced by military nurses during wartime.

INTRODUCTION: The War on Terrorism, which included Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2014 and the concurrent Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) from 2003 to 2011, exposed military nurses to situations and challenges for which many reported feeling unprepared. Clinically, nurses faced multi-trauma injuries and devastating wounds suffered by military troops and civilians alike. Cultural issues and harsh living conditions added further complications to the care environment. The purpose of this study was to address the research question: How do military nurses identify, asses
