Lipopolysaccharide-induced sickness behaviour evaluated in different models of anxiety and innate fear in rats.

The fact that there is a complex and bidirectional communication between the immune and nervous systems has been well demonstrated. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a component of gram-negative bacteria, is widely used to systematically stimulate the immune system and generate profound physiological and behavioural changes, also known as 'sickness behaviour' (e.g. anhedonia, lethargy, loss of appetite, anxiety, sleepiness). Different ethological tools have been used to analyse the behavioural modifications induced by LPS; however, many researchers analysed only individual tests, a single LPS dose or

An ethologist's approach to behavioural toxicology.

Ethology, the biology of behaviour, is briefly introduced, and a review is presented of two ethological methods applied to toxicology. (1) When elements in the behaviour of rats in a social situation are objectively observed, chemically-induced changes in several kinds of behaviour can be detected at low doses. Changes are specific and repeatable in long-term experiments. Effects of nicotine at a 'smoking' dose, or trichloroethylene at the Threshold Limit Value, were reversible; limited tolerance developed to methyl mercury dicyandiamide. (2) An 'Exploration-Thirst' method is simple enough for

Biased connectivity shapes food odor categorization in the Drosophila mushroom body.

Animals rely on neural representations of sensory stimuli to rapidly recognize familiar environments and precisely identify salient cues. In the Drosophila mushroom body, odors are represented by the activity of Kenyon cells (KCs), whose random wiring with olfactory projection neurons (PNs) is generally thought to promote odor discrimination. Here, we investigated how deviations from this random wiring shape odor representations. By recording the responses of individual KC types to odors, we found that food-related odor representations formed by αβ and, in part, α'β' KCs were separated from re

Rupture of sinus of Valsalva aneurysm to the right atrium resolved with interventionism.

We present a case of a ruptured right sinus of Valsalva aneurysm to the right atrium that developed global heart failure over the course of three months, and which was completely resolved through cardiac catheterism, placing an occlusive device at the site of the fistula. Its ethology is discussed, as well as the guidelines for clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Behavioral Electrophysiology in Manduca sexta: The Explore/Exploit Framework.

Animal behavior is inherently multi-scale. Traditional neuroethology approaches have focused on the neural circuit level and free behavior level studies. In bridging the behavioral-neural divide, simultaneous neural recordings with behavioral readouts have been immensely successful in recent years. However, such studies often need vast resources and technological investment, often with fragile and expensive measurement tools. Therefore, there is a need for frugal-science-style devices for neuroethology. We define a class of such tools called "Exploratory Tools" using a six-point criteria. Thes

Spatial Regulation Control of Oxygen Metabolic Consumption in Mouse Brain.

The mammalian brain relies on significant oxygen metabolic consumption to fulfill energy supply, brain function, and neural activity. In this study, in vivo electrochemistry is combined with physiological and ethological analyses to explore oxygen metabolic consumption in an area of the mouse brain that includes parts of the primary somatosensory cortex, primary motor cortex, hippocampus, and striatum. The oxygen levels at different locations of this boundary section are spatially resolved by measuring the electrical current in vivo using ingeniously designed anti-biofouling carbon fiber micro

[Varicoceles in adolescents and relationship with bmi: are varicoceles more frequent in tall thin men?].

OBJECTIVES: Varicocele is a dilatation of the venous pampiniform plexus considered the leading cause of correctible male infertility. Varicocele ethology remains controversial and there have been several studies which inform that varicoceles are found less frequently in obese adolescents but relationship between varicocele and body mass index (BMI) remains controversial yet. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: To study the relationship between varicocele and body mass index in children population we review the patients treated for varicocele in our institution. We analyzed patients with varicocele surgical

Effect of single treatment with the antihypertensive drug eplerenone on hormone levels and anxiety-like behaviour in rats.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of single peripheral administration of mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) antagonist eplerenone on: 1. the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis; 2. the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone (RAA) system, 3. anxiety-like behaviour. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were injected subcutaneously with eplerenone (100 mg/kg body weight) or vehicle. Two hours following the injections, a half of the animals from each treatment group were decapitated to obtain blood for measurement of hormone levels. The other half of the animals was subjected t

[Double post-acute myocardial infarction complication: rupture of the interventricular septum and acute mitral insufficiency].

We present a case of double post acute myocardial infarction complication: ventricular septal defect and acute and severe mitral insufficiency. As a consequence of the delay in the diagnosis, the patient developed pulmonary hypertension with values at the systemic level. The patient underwent surgery in order to close the ventricular septal defect and aneurysmectomy, resulting in posterior regression of mitral insufficiency and pulmonary circuit values became normal. The ethology, diagnosis, evolution and treatment of this exceptional association of acute post myocardial infarction complicatio

Interpreting the retinal neural code for natural scenes: From computations to neurons.

Understanding the circuit mechanisms of the visual code for natural scenes is a central goal of sensory neuroscience. We show that a three-layer network model predicts retinal natural scene responses with an accuracy nearing experimental limits. The model's internal structure is interpretable, as interneurons recorded separately and not modeled directly are highly correlated with model interneurons. Models fitted only to natural scenes reproduce a diverse set of phenomena related to motion encoding, adaptation, and predictive coding, establishing their ethological relevance to natural visual c

The effect of different working definitions on behavioral research involving stereotypies in Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus).

Many sources of variation in animal experiments are related to characteristics of the animal or its husbandry conditions. In ethologic studies, observational methods can also affect interexperimental variation. Different descriptions for a behavior can lead to divergent findings that may be incorrectly attributed to other factors if not recognized as stemming from a classification dissonance. Here we discuss 2 observational studies in Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus). The first study describes how data vary when 2 different working definitions are used for stereotypic digging: WD(mor)

Avian neuroanatomy revisited: from clinical principles to avian cognition.

Several significant advances in understanding brain-behavior development have made a critical contribution to clinical assessment of companion birds. First, psychobiological health and its dysfunctions now are understood as the product of nature and nurture and therefore exquisitely sensitive to stressors effected by altered socio-ecological conditions within and across generations. Second, discoveries associated with avian brain evolution and ethology show that emotional and cognitive capacities of birds are comparable to mammals. This article presents an overview of these new perspectives an

Anxiety and anxiety disorders. Toward a conceptual reorientation.

Traditionally, it has been assumed that there is only one type of anxiety; recent pharmacologic evidence suggests that there may be several. The psychoanalytic concept of "neurotic" symptoms as depressurizing mechanisms is out of keeping with most evidence now available. Spontaneous or "free-floating" anxiety may be partly biologic and genetic in origin. Anxiety symptoms evoked by specific stimuli behave in part like conditioned responses. Where conditioning theory has failed to propose a plausible unconditioned stimulus for pathologic anxiety, biology, ethology, and psychoanalysis may have be

Translational science in action: hostile attributional style and the development of aggressive behavior problems.

A model of the development of hostile attributional style and its role in children's aggressive behavior is proposed, based on the translation of basic science in ethology, neuroscience, social psychology, personality psychology, and developmental psychology. Theory and findings from these domains are reviewed and synthesized in the proposed model, which posits that (a) aggressive behavior and hostile attributions are universal human characteristics, (b) socialization leads to the development of benign attributions, (c) individual differences in attributional style account for differences in a

'Bringing natural behaviour into the laboratory': international networks, aggression research, and Czechoslovak psychopharmacology in the 1970s.

This article explores the development of ethological research on aggression in late socialist Czechoslovakia, focusing on the work of pharmacologist Miloslav Kršiak (1939-2016) at the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. Drawing on archival records, personal correspondence, and institutional sources, it examines Kršiak's international networks and shows how he sustained collaborations with colleagues abroad, as well as the strategies he adopted to navigate the political setting of the Normalization period. The study also demonstrates how ethological approaches were adapted to meet state socialist

Rats treated chronically with the benzodiazepine, diazepam or with ethanol exhibit reduced variability of behavior.

The hypothesis that chronic treatment with diazepam or with ethanol reduces behavioral variability, was tested on rats in a radial maze. Eight groups (n = 6) of male Sprague-Dawley rats were given one of eight treatments of diazepam (0.0, 1.5, 3.0 or 6.0 mg/kg, IP, -30 min) or of 10% ethanol (0.0, 1.0, 1.5, or 2.0 g/kg, IP, -15 min) for 2 sessions of baseline and 18 sessions of acquisition. Each session consisted of 3 trials of 8 rewards each. Emptied food wells were immediately rebaited so that an entry into any arm produced a reward of 2 food pellets. Both diazepam and ethanol produced a dos
