The gut Coccidia are members of a large, varied, and exclusively intracellular group of protozoan parasites, four species of which (Isospora, Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora, and Sarcocystis) are human pathogens. The first three, but particularly Cryptosporidium parvum, have moved from medical curiosities to major problems with the coming of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic, but are now known to also cause disease in the immunocompetent patient. They are easy to acquire and difficult to remove from the environment and, in the case of cryptosporidiosis, impossible to treat pro

Despite Pakistan's rich reptilian diversity, wild lizards have largely been unexplored for vector-borne parasites. This study reports the prevalence and phylogenetic assessment of Hepatozoon ophisauri and Toxoplasma gondii DNA in the blood samples of 101 wild lizards from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, captured at altitudes of 1200 to 2250 m above sea level between March 2022 and June 2023. PCR-based molecular analysis identified H. ophisauri DNA in three (3%) lizards of all Laudakia tuberculata. Additionally, 45 (44.5%) lizards tested positive for T. gondii DNA, including L. agrorensis, L. pak

Lankesterella Labbe, 1899 is a genus of blood parasites found in reptiles, amphibians, and birds that has been poorly understood. In birds, it was originally classified as Hepatozoon Miller, 1908 or Atoxoplasma Garnham, 1905, but recent studies have revealed the diversity, prevalence, and host specificity of Lankesterella using integrative approaches, particularly the 18S rDNA gene. The introduction of new diagnostic protocols focusing on mitochondrial genes requires assessing the comparability of different diagnostic methods. This study aims to compare microscopy and molecular detection metho

Apicomplexan haemoparasites of the genera Schellackia Reichenow, 1919, and Karyolysus Labbé, 1894, seem to be common in lizards and widespread across the world. For decades, their identification has been based on morphological descriptions and life cycle patterns, with molecular characterizations, applied only recently. We used molecular characterization to confirm the identification of haemoparasites detected by microscopy in blood smears of Lacerta schreiberi Bedriaga, 1878, a lizard of the Iberian Peninsula. Since blood samples other than blood smears were not available from the studied liz

Hepatozoon canis is a tick-borne pathogen of canids, which is distributed worldwide. However, very little is known about this protozoan parasite in Pakistan. This study provides the first molecular evidence of H. canis from farm dogs from three agro-ecological zones of Punjab, Pakistan. A conventional PCR targeting the 18S rRNA gene was used to characterize H. canis from farm dogs from three districts, namely Kasur, Rawalpindi, and Muzaffargarh, in Punjab. Of 341 blood samples tested, 155 (45.5%) were positive for H. canis, 73 (61.3%) from Kasur, 46 (42.5%) from Rawalpindi, and 36 (31.5%) from

BACKGROUND: Hepatozoon spp. are apicomplexan parasites with a heteroxenous life cycles, involving vertebrate intermediate hosts and invertebrate definitive hosts. These parasites infect a wide variety of wild and domestic vertebrates causing subclinical infection or mild-to-severe clinical manifestations, depending on the parasite species and vertebrate host. Interestingly, each Hepatozoon spp. have a specific host range, suggesting a close host-parasite coevolutionary relationship.
METHODS: Hepatozoon sequences deposited between 2013 and 2023 were mined from GenBank to test which was the mos

Ticks are hematophagous ectoparasites that pose substantial threats by vectoring several pathogens and by directly inducing tick toxicosis both in animals and humans. No studies have reported tick toxicosis in humans or animals in Pakistan. This study aimed to investigate tick toxicosis in human and animals, and screen these ticks for tick-borne pathogens. A human toxicosis case was observed in District Lakki Marwat, where 51-years-old male farmer was bitten by Hyalomma scupense. A total of 239 hosts were examined for tick toxicosis in the five districts of northern Pakistan, in which 54 hosts

The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is known to be a reservoir host of various vector-borne protozoan parasites. Yet, the impact of these parasitic infections on the health status of the red fox is unknown. In this study, we compared the prevalence of haemoprotozoa in juvenile and adult foxes from four regions in Poland. The abundance of questing adult Dermacentor reticulatus ticks was shown to differ between regions and include a tick-endemic and non-endemic region, as well as two zones in which D. reticulatus recently expanded: an eastern and a western zone. Spleen and kidney enlargement indices wer

Hyalomma aegyptium (L., 1758) (Ixodida: Ixodidae) is a hard tick and the main host for adults are Palearctic tortoises of the genus Testudo, while larvae and nymphs are less host-specific and nymphs also attach to humans. In the present study, a total of 261 H. aegyptium ticks were removed from 26 Testudo graeca L., 1758 in Corum Province of Turkey. The most prevalent pathogens identified molecularly in the ticks were Hemolivia mauritanica (51.9 %), followed by Rickettsia aeschlimannii (32.6 %), Ehrlichia spp. (30.2 %), and Bartonella bovis (0.8 %). All samples were negative for Coxiella burne

A wild-caught adult female southern water snake (Nerodia fasciata pictiventris) did poorly in captivity. A peripheral blood-film examination demonstrated numerous hemogregarines characterized as fusiform nondividing intraerythrocytic gametocytes. Xenodiagnostic typing in laboratory-reared mosquitoes demonstrated the parasite to be of the genus Hepatozoon. Gross and histopathologic examination of the liver demonstrated numerous granulomas centered on groups of one to six Hepatozoon sp. meronts, an unusual finding in naturally infected wild-caught snakes.

Although venomous snakes from the family Viperidae, such as Bothrops atrox, are recognized for their medical importance due to snakebite accidents, few studies on parasitological aspects have been carried out with them, especially in the Amazonia region. Using morphological and molecular tools, we described a novel haemogregarine species infecting the common lancehead snake B. atrox from Eastern Amazonia, Brazil. Hepatozoon atrocis sp. nov. has mature gamonts that are morphologically distinct from those reported in the literature, which are often compact, with dispersed or encapsulated cytopla

Hepatozoonosis can cause serious illness in dogs in the USA resulting in muscle weakness and bone deformities. It is often fatal, and treatment is expensive and not curative. There are two recognized species of Hepatozoon which infect dogs, Hepatozoon canis and Hepatozoon americanum, transmitted by ticks, Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato and Amyboloma maculatum, respectively. Hepatozoon canis has worldwide distribution and H. americanum is currently confined to the USA. Wildlife reservoirs of H. americanum have not been established but coyote (Canis latrans) is suspected, and infection is c

Understanding the interactions among hosts, vectors, and pathogens is essential for elucidating the ecology of tick-borne diseases. However, studies on tick fauna and pathogenic infections in large mammals in Hokkaido, Japan remain limited. We examined the spatial and temporal (region and season) and host factors (sex and age) affecting pathogen prevalence and tick infestation in sika deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis) and brown bears (Ursus arctos yesoensis) in Hokkaido. We selected Anaplasma and Hepatozoon, two prevalent pathogens in sika deer and brown bears, respectively, to analyze host-vecto

Hepatozoon sp. stages were detected in histological sections of the muscles of 11 of 25 bobcats (Lynx rufus). Parasites were detected from the myocardium of 11, tongues of 4, and limb muscles of 5 of these animals, which had been hunted in Mississippi in 2017. The intensity of infection was highest in the heart. Only asexual stages (meronts) were detected. Three types of meronts (types 1, 2, and 3) were detected, based on structure and mode of division. Additionally, individual zoites were found in leukocytes in the blood vessels of the myocardium, but the stage was not identified. Based on ge

Dogs play an important role as hosts and reservoirs for many zoonotic diseases. Ehrlichiosis, babesiosis and hepatozoonosis are a group of canine vector-borne diseases that can be transmitted via ectoparasites from dog to dog and also from dog to humans. This study focused on three main blood parasites of dog (i.e., Babesia spp., Ehrlichia spp. and Hepatozoon spp.) among two different landscape types of eight villages of Santhong Sub-district, Nan Province, Thailand. In this study, 149 dogs were surveyed and blood samples were collected. Blood parasite infections in dogs were assessed using mo
