ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Eugenia uniflora L. (Myrtaceae), commonly known as pitanga or Brazilian cherry, is widely used in traditional medicine across South America, particularly in Brazil's semi-arid regions, to treat fever, gastrointestinal disorders, and microbial infections. Its therapeutic potential is attributed to phenolic compounds such as myricitrin, gallic acid, and ellagic acid, which exhibit well-documented antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. In the context of the growing global threat posed by multidrug-resistant fungal pathogens, especially species of the Candi

Haemaphysalis longicornis, which is widely distributed in China, can transmit various tick-borne diseases such as severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome, babesiosis, rickettsia disease and so on, and do great harm to human health and the development of animal husbandry. Chemical acaricides are the most traditional tick control method, but because of its many shortcomings, there is an urgent need to find a substitute with high efficiency, environmental protection and low toxicity. It has been found that some plant essential oils (EOs) have good insecticidal activity and environmental safet

The edible berries of Eugenia jambolana Lam. (known as Jamun) are consumed in various parts of the world. Our previous studies revealed that a triterpenoid-enriched Jamun fruit extract (TJFE) showed beneficial effects on glucose homeostasis in non-diabetic mice. Herein, the anti-diabetic effects of TJFE (100 mg kg-1 by oral gavage for ten days) were evaluated in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type 1 diabetic mice. TJFE significantly attenuated STZ-induced hyperglycemia and glucose intolerance, suppressed the abnormal elevation of hepatic gluconeogenesis, and improved dyslipidemia in the mice. Hi

This study describes anti-inflamatory activity of epicuticular wax (ECW) extracted from leaves of Eugenia brasiliensis Lam., and its isolated compounds, catechin and gallocatechin in a pleurisy model in mice. The results for exudation and cell migration showed that the extract and isolated compounds from the plant were effective in inhibiting these inflammatory parameters. The ECW demonstrated a dose-dependent effect on the inhibition of cell migration. The results for NOx levels reveals that the isolated compounds from Eugenia brasiliensis were effective in inhibiting the production of this i

Eugenia copacabanensis and Myrciaria tenella are present in restingas of the Atlantic Forest, but little information is available about their chemical and biological potential. In this context, the hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and butanol fractions from the leaves of methanolic extract were analyzed by GC/MS and HPLC-DAD and the antioxidant potential was determined by DPPH and ABTS assays and using a Saccharomyces cerevisiae model. Dereplication allowed the identification of 68 compounds, 42 and 41 of which, respectively, are first reported here for E. copacabanensis and M. tenella.

Microglia are cells of the myeloid lineage that reside in the central nervous system (CNS)(1). These cells play an important role in pathologies of many diseases associated with neuroinflammation such as multiple sclerosis (MS)(2). Microglia in a normal CNS express macrophage marker CD11b and exhibit a resting phenotype by expressing low levels of activation markers such as CD45. During pathological events in the CNS, microglia become activated as determined by upregulation of CD45 and other markers(3). The factors that affect microglia phenotype and functions in the CNS are not well studied.

In the context of developing a new natural product-based cosmetic, the in vitro efficacy and safety evaluations of a complex botanical mixture based on Eugenia dysenterica leaf hydroalcoholic extract (EDE) (2.5-1000μg/mL) were carried out. Chromatographic analysis demonstrated the presence of the tannin (ellagic acid) and flavonoids (quercetin and gallic acid) which characterize the EDE as a polyphenol-rich mixture. Using HFF-1 fibroblasts, it was shown that EDE promoted cell regeneration after UVA exposure. It also led to the inhibition of the collagenase, elastase and tyrosinase enzymes, whi

Current cancer treatments, including surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, frequently have significant adverse effects, which restrict treatment options due to their toxicity. It is crucial to identify supplementary therapies using natural compounds that can inhibit tumor growth without causing severe side effects. This study explored the anti-cancer potential of earthworm coelomic fluid (ECF) protein (CF-P), non-protein (CF-NP), and crude (CF-C) from Eudrilus eugeniae against various human cancer cell lines (A549, MCF-7, MDA-MB-231, ME180, HEPG2, and HT-29). In vitro assays, such as MTT, c

Oenothein B (OeB) is a dimeric ellagitannin with potent antioxidative, antitumor, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory properties. Despite the promising activities of OeB, studies examining the genotoxic or protective effects of this ellagitannin on DNA are scarce. Therefore, to further comprehensively elucidate the chemopreventive profile of OeB, the aim of this study was to evaluate the mutagenic and antimutagenic actions of OeB using Salmonella typhimurium strains with the Ames test. The micronucleus (MN) test and comet assay were used to assess the anticytotoxic and antigenotoxic effect

Intense and constant exposure to UVB radiation can lead to inflammation and oxidative stress, which are associated with many cutaneous disorders, including photoaging and skin cancer. Antioxidant plant materials that are rich in polyphenols, such as the ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) from Eugenia hiemalis leaves, and phenolic compounds represent a promising approach to protect the skin against UVB-induced damage. The present study evaluated the photochemoprotective potential of the EAF and its 2,6-di-O-galloylarbutin (1) isolate. The EAF and the phenolic antioxidant (1) reduced UVB-induced L929
