This study contributes to the discussion on the development of eugenics in Central-Eastern Europe by tracing the way that eugenic ideas entered into medical decision-making in Hungary. Through a case study that reviews the professional argumentation of the gynecological management of tuberculosis pregnancies, this paper shows that the subordination of individual reproductive rights to state interests was influenced by the ideas of eugenics, which had begun to enter into the professional public health discourse. This article analyzes maternity in Social Assistance based on the demographic policy of the first Franco regime, influenced by eugenic thought. Considering that during the Franco regime the control of women's bodies became an essential tool of its biopolitics, the presence of eugenic ideas and practices around the health problem of syphilis in pregnant women and congenital syphilis is discussed. The role of Social Assistance in the implementation of prenatal surveillance during pregnancy and the process of institutionalization and medicalization of childbirth in Spain is also analyzed.

The congenital sternal fissure of Eugene Groux is outstanding in every respect: at first, it constitutes a sole case in history of medicine, for this fissure was complete (from the manubrium to the xiphoid process). Secondly, it was an object of medical examinations for over 2000 physicians all around the world. Thirdly, the patient himself wrote a monograph devoted to his malformation (1859). We analyze in this paper the monograph of Eugene Groux, as well as the anatomicomedical conclusions which followed this exceptional case.
