Anthraquinones in Rheum palmatum and Rumex dentatus (Polygonaceae), and phorbol esters in Jatropha curcas (Euphorbiaceae) with molluscicidal activity against the schistosome vector snails Oncomelania, Biomphalaria and Bulinus.

Hot water extracts of Rheum plamatum and Rheum dentatus (from China) showed molluscicidal activity against the snails Oncomelania hupensis, Biomphalaria glabrata and Bulinus globosus, which are vectors of Schistosoma japonicum, S. mansoni and S. haematobium, respectively. Activity was correlated with antraquinones which were identified by HPLC: rhein and chrysophanol-anthron were most active (> 50% dead snails after 2 days in a 0.03% solution). Molluscicidal activity was intermediate with Rheum-emodin and physcion and was not detectable with cinnamic acid or Aloe-emodin. The snail O. hupensis

Dietary cancer risk from conditional cancerogens in produce of livestock fed on species of spurge (Euphorbiaceae). II. Pathophysiological investigations in lactating goats fed on the skin irritant herb Euphorbia peplus and in their milk-raised kids.

Lactating goats were fed on aerial parts of the herb Euphorbia peplus L. admixed with their usual green fodder. During the experimental feeding period they showed symptoms of general poisoning. In necropsy the main toxic effects were seen in the heart, lung and liver. Histopathological examinations revealed that the primary toxic effects originated from degenerative changes in parenchymal and endothelial cells. Adverse symptoms in the liver and kidney were also reflected in an alteration of the levels of certain serum enzymes and of blood urea nitrogen. The milk of the goats fed on E. peplus,

[Euphorbiae keratoconjunctivitis].

This paper reports on 6 cases of keratoconjunctivitis caused by the latex of Euphorbiaceae, one of them with slight systemic intoxication. Phorbolesters are considered to be responsible for the toxicity of the latex of Euphorbiaceae, e.g., in the case of Euphorbia helioscopia, 12-Desoxyphorbol-13-phenylacetate-2-O-acetate. Since all of the cases of keratoconjunctivitis Euphorbiae described here, as well as the majority of those cited in the literature, have resulted in a restitutio ad integrum, a benign course may be expected, even in cases of keratoconjunctivitis Euphorbiae with initially sev

Anaphylactic reaction to phuk-waan-ban in a patient with latex allergy.

Phuk-waan-ban, Euphorbiaceae Sauropus androgynus (Linn) Merr, belongs to the family Euphorbiaceae, which is the same as the rubber tree, Euphorbiaceae Hevea brasiliensis. The young leaves are edible. To the best of the authors knowledge, this is the first report of anaphylactic reaction to Phuk-waan-ban in latex allergic patients. Contact urticaria and anaphylactic reactions to latex-containing rubber products are being recognized with increasing frequency in all kinds of medical disciplines. The prevalence and incidence are both increasing. Recently, a number of reports have been published de

The Scourge of the Spurge Family-An Imitator of Rhus Dermatitis.

The Euphorbiaceae family (commonly known as "spurge") is a large, diverse, and widely distributed family of plants that encompass around 300 genera and more than 8000 species. Their attractiveness and hearty nature have made them popular for both indoor ornamentation and outdoor landscaping. Despite their ubiquity, the potential to cause irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) is often overlooked in favor of more notorious causes of phytodermatitis, namely, Toxicodendron species and nettles. We examined case reports spanning 40 years and discovered that spurge-induced ICD tends to befall children an

The chemistry and biology of securinega alkaloids.

Securinega alkaloids have attracted immense attention from the phytochemical, synthetic, and pharmacological communities owing to their structural diversity and intriguing biological activities. Predominantly found in the genera Flueggea, Phyllanthus, Margaritaria, and Zygogynum, these alkaloids display a remarkable range of molecular architectures derived from the monomeric tetracyclic core consisting of the α,β-γ,δ-unsaturated ester moiety and the tertiary alkyl amine group. Their biosynthetic elaboration through oxidation, rearrangement, and oligomerization gives rise to an extraordinary ch

C-20 oxidized furylethyl clerodane diterpenes isolated from Croton argyratus and their antifungal activity.

A thorough phytochemical study of a 50% MeOH/CH2Cl2 extract of Croton argyratus (Euphorbiaceae) yielded 17 furylethyl clerodanes, crotargyric acids A-L (1-12), ent-heteroscyphsic acids B, C, and F (13-15), crotargyrol (16), and biscrotargyric acid A (17). In these metabolites, the C-9 methyl group of the original clerodane scaffold was oxidized to a carboxylic acid in compounds 1-15 and 17 or to a hydroxymethyl in compound 16. Compounds 1-15 and 17 represent rare examples of clerodanes with a furylethyl moiety and a carboxylic acid at C-9. Other notable structural features include the A-ring r

Metabolome Analysis and Functional Activities of Euphorbia royleana Boiss. Indicating Potential Health Benefits.

Euphorbia royleana (Euphorbiaceae) is an important succulent species and commonly known as Royle's spurge. It is used to treat inflammation, paralysis, and brain-related problems. The literature revealed that E. royleana was not well explored for phytochemical diversity and health benefits. Therefore, the current study was focused on investigating solvent-dependent chemical diversity and bioactive properties across stems, leaves, and reproductive tissue (flowers and seeds). Ethanol, 50% ethanol, and water extracts were prepared, in which the water extract of leaves showed the highest extractio

Recurrent allopolyploidization, Y-chromosome introgression and the evolution of sexual systems in the plant genus Mercurialis.

The plant genus Mercurialis includes dioecious, monoecious and androdioecious species (where males coexist with hermaphrodites). Its diversification involved reticulate evolution via hybridization and polyploidization. The Y chromosome of the diploid species Mercurialis annua shows only mild signs of degeneration. We used sequence variation at a Y-linked locus in several species and at multiple autosomal and pseudoautosomal loci to investigate the origin and evolution of the Y chromosome across the genus. Our study provides evidence for further cases of allopolyploid speciation. It also reveal

Dioecy and chromosomal sex determination are maintained through allopolyploid speciation in the plant genus Mercurialis.

Polyploidization may precipitate dramatic changes to the genome, including chromosome rearrangements, gene loss, and changes in gene expression. In dioecious plants, the sex-determining mechanism may also be disrupted by polyploidization, with the potential evolution of hermaphroditism. However, while dioecy appears to have persisted through a ploidy transition in some species, it is unknown whether the newly formed polyploid maintained its sex-determining system uninterrupted, or whether dioecy re-evolved after a period of hermaphroditism. Here, we develop a bioinformatic pipeline using RNA-s
