Orphan drug policy in the European Union faces a double price-and-innovation gap: a small fraction of rare diseases receive important resources while the overwhelming majority are under- or un-researched, leaving most rare disease patients facing high unmet medical needs. The European Commission's reform proposals, notably the Pharma Package and the European Biotech Act, seek to rebalance incentives by adjusting market exclusivity. We argue that, while these reforms move in the right direction, they are insufficient to foster meaningful innovation while safeguarding affordability, and that a b

Tuberculosis (TB) is a leading cause of death globally. TB had been considered conquered in Europe but has re-emerged as a significant problem, partly because of poor TB control programs and the link with HIV infection, migrants and other vulnerable populations, but also because a mood of complacency led to declining investment in research and public health infrastructure. In the European Union (EU), efforts initiated by the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) now assess how research can better inform policy development and indicate the gaps and uncertainties in the scientific

OBJECTIVE: A competent vector of dengue and chikungunya viruses, Aedes albopictus, is present in Europe. As a first step towards assessing the likelihood of local transmission of these viruses in Europe, we estimated the number of viremic person-days among air-travellers arriving in the European Union (EU).
METHODS: For dengue, we developed a Monte Carlo model with the following parameters: probability distributions based on quarterly incidences in endemic countries (years 2003-2007), passenger flow from endemic to EU countries (year 2006), duration of viremia, probability of being viremic up

OBJECTIVE: The rapid increase in obesity rates over recent years suggest that cultural and societal influences are affecting the adjustment in the energy balance equation in addition to other physiopathological or genetic determinants. Therefore, a pan-EU study was carried out to explore the influence of sociodemographic factors as well as some attitudes (smoking and exercise) on the prevalence of obesity in the adult population of all 15 member states of the EU.
DESIGN: Overall, a sample of 15,239 individuals aged 15 years and upwards in the EU completed the questionnaire. Subject selection

We report a survey on urine drug testing within a total of 269 laboratories of the European Union. Clinical laboratories predominated over forensic laboratories (59.5% vs 28.5%). Screening without identification/quantification was the common approach used by clinical laboratories, whereas screening with identification/quantification was the approach used by almost all forensic laboratories. Screening was primarily performed by immunoassay in both types of laboratories. Gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry was the main analytical method used for specific identification/quantification

A Criteria Document for hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], currently under preparation at the Institute of Occupational Health, University of Birmingham, is intended for use in setting an occupational exposure limit (OEL) for Cr(VI) in the European Union (EU). The requirement for establishing OELs, specifically known as indicative limit values, in the EU is set out in Council Directive 80/1107/EEC, amended by Council Directive 88/642/EEC. To facilitate this procedure the Commission has set up a Scientific Committee for Occupational Exposure Limits to Chemical Agents. The Committee, which is compose

BACKGROUND: Alcohol and drug misuse is a social and health phenomenon of great relevance in the European Union (EU). One indicator of scientific production in a given area is the analysis of publications included in bibliographic databases. Scientific production on alcohol and drug misuse was analysed in EU member countries, and comparisons were made between countries.
METHODS: Analysis of articles on alcohol and drug misuse published during the period 1976-2000 by institutions based in a country of the EU, indexed by PsycINFO.
RESULTS: A total of 4825 citations was retrieved. Great Britain

As in most other established market economies throughout the world the prevalence of dental caries has declined in most Member States of the European Union (EU). There is evidence that the increased use of fluoride toothpaste has been a major factor in this improvement. Recently there has been increasing debate on the alleged link between increased use of fluoride toothpaste, particularly by infants and young children, and increased levels of enamel fluorosis. Central to these discussions are two issues, namely measurement of the amount of fluoride ingested by infants and young children and me

After long-term rises, over the last decade age-standardised mortality from most common cancer sites has fallen in the European Union (EU). For males, the fall was 11% for lung and intestines, 12% for bladder, 6% for oral cavity and pharynx, and 5% for oesophagus. For females, the fall was 7% for breast and 21% for intestines. There were also persisting declines in stomach cancer (30% in both sexes), uterus (mainly cervix, -26%) and leukaemias (-10%). Mortality rates for other common neoplasms, including pancreas for both sexes, prostate and ovary, tended to stabilise. The only unfavourable tr

Marine biotoxins, more or less complex molecules with various origins that can accumulate in the tissues of fish products through the food chain, are reviewed. The EU, aware of the danger incurred in eating certain fish products, has issued a set of hygiene and health directives for the purpose of preventing disease and safeguarding consumer health. In particular, directive 91/492/EEC, of 15 July 1991, lays down the sanitary norms applicable to the production and commercialization of live bivalve molluscs, echinoderms, tunicates and marine gastropods and regulates the whole system involving th

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) continue to be a significant public health challenge and have an impact on sexual and reproductive health. European Union and European Economic Area (EU/EEA) countries report data annually on the number of cases of syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia, and lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. No similar system exists for the non-EU/EEA countries in the WHO European Region, and therefore, the sub-regional overview was unclear due to the limited data availability and inconsistency.

INTRODUCTION: Adherence to COVID-19 mitigation measures is an important vehicle that has contributed to the fight against the pandemic. The present study investigated potential changes of the level of adherence and its predictors between 2020 and 2021 in eight countries.
METHODS: Adherence to COVID-19 measures and its potential predictors (perception of usefulness of the measures, rating of the governmental COVID-19 communication, mental health variables, COVID-19 burden) were compared between representative population samples from European Union countries (France, Germany, Poland, Spain, Swe

INTRODUCTION: To update the European guidelines for the assessment of voice quality (VQ) in clinical practice.
METHODS: Nineteen laryngologists-phoniatricians of the European Laryngological Society (ELS) and the Union of the European Phoniatricians (UEP) participated to a modified Delphi process to propose statements about subjective and objective VQ assessments. Two anonymized voting rounds determined a consensus statement to be acceptable when 80% of experts agreed with a rating of at least 3/4. The statements with ≥ 3/4 score by 60-80% of experts were improved and resubmitted to voting unt

BACKGROUND: Migrants are considered a key group at risk for HIV infection. This study describes the epidemiology of HIV and the distribution of late HIV presentation among migrants within the European Union/European Economic Area during 2007-2012.
METHODS: HIV cases reported to European Surveillance System (TESSy) were analyzed. Migrants were defined as people whose geographical origin was different than the reporting country. Multiple logistic regression was used to model late HIV presentation.
RESULTS: Overall, 156,817 HIV cases were reported, of which 60,446 (38%) were migrants. Of these,

The burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is driven by mortality and the necessity of kidney replacement therapy (KRT). CKD causes one death every 20 seconds globally and is among the fastest growing causes of death. It is forecast to become the fifth most common global cause of death and the third in western Europe by 2050. It is estimated that 511 549 European Union (EU) inhabitants depend on KRT, with nearly two-thirds (≈310 000) treated by dialysis, and the remainder being kidney transplant recipients (≈200 000). KRT is provided by every EU country. France (96 317), Germany (77 900), Spai

There is in Poland an urgent need to set criteria and recommendations for medical certification of individuals working or taking up the job involving public safety, in which diabetes could have a particularly important and dangerous impact. In Europe, many countries have restrictions for diabetic drivers. Diabetes is identified as one of the medical conditions that may impair driving ability and thus drivers with diabetes must meet certain medical standards. The European Union legislation states that diabetic patients taking insulin are excluded from driving trucks, heavy goods vehicles, and b

The reaction in Britain to the European Union ban on the world-wide export of British beef has highlighted a lack of awareness of the role of European law in restricting trade on grounds of public health. This paper seeks to bring the legal arguments underlying such action to a wider public health audience by exploring the basis for such action in general and for the ban on British beef in particular. In European law, the obstruction of intra-community trade on grounds of public health is extremely limited although, in the case of British beef, there seems little doubt that it is lawful. In co

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Herpes zoster (HZ), caused by varicella zoster virus (VZV) reactivation, significantly affects the functional status and quality of life of older adults and immunocompromised individuals. Vaccination represents an effective strategy to reduce the incidence of HZ.
METHODS: This review offers a cross-sectional assessment of the current landscape of adult herpes zoster vaccination strategies across the 27 EU member states, drawing on data available up to July 2025 from official sources such as the ECDC, the WHO, and national health authorities.
RESULTS: HZ vaccination is

Biosimilars are not generics. They are similar, but not exactly identical to the biological reference product. The development plan of a biosimilar should assess the physical, chemical and biological properties (quality), as well as toxicological (safety), pharmacodynamic, pharmacokinetic, and clinical (efficacy and safety) characteristics of the biosimilar developed. The development of generics requires bioequivalence studies in healthy volunteers. Abasaglar®, a biosimilar of insulin glargine, is the first insulin biosimilar approved in the European Union. Individuals with latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) are the reservoir of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a population and as long as this reservoir exists, elimination of tuberculosis (TB) will not be feasible. In 2013, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) started an assessment of benefits and risks of introducing programmatic LTBI control, with the aim of providing guidance on how to incorporate LTBI control into national TB strategies in European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) Member States and candidate countries. In a first step, experts from the Member Stat
