À draft law on 'support for the sick and the end of life' was presented in 2024 in France and debated by the deputies at first reading. The first part concerned 'supportive care and the patients' rights', while the second concerned "active assistance in dying'. With the dissolution of the National Assembly in June 2024, discussion of the proposed law has been suspended. In this summary, we review the development of the legislation governing palliative care in France, from the Laroque circular in 1986 to the Claeys-Léonetti law currently in force. Secondly, we develop the legislation and texts

Epidemiological studies of suicide in the elderly indicate that, in the last few decades, there has been a relevant increase in suicide rates in old age in a number of Asian and Latin nations, with an almost parallel decrease in Anglo-Saxon counties. Mental disorders, particularly depression, physical illness, personality traits such as hostility, hopelessness, the inability to verbally express psychological pain and dependency on others, recent life events and losses are all factors that may contribute to suicide in later life. Compared with suicide in other age groups, mors voluntaris in lat

A 15-year-old pony was presented for acute neurological signs. Neurological examination suggested a brainstem lesion, blood laboratory tests detected an active inflammatory process, and upper respiratory endoscopy identified a suppurative lesion at the dorsal aspect of the right guttural pouch. Computed tomography was performed and findings were consistent with pituitary abscess, meningitis, and atlanto-occipital joint septic arthritis. Imaging findings were confirmed based on cerebrospinal and synovial fluid cultures and necropsy. Computed tomography provided important information for identif

The impact of intense countertransference affects in working with patients experiencing complex trauma can have a critical effect on decisions about euthanasia, especially when such decisions are made solely on the grounds of a psychiatric condition. These countertransference dynamics become particularly significant in the context of the rising number of euthanasia requests by psychiatric patients in the Netherlands. We contend that for a subgroup of patients with complex trauma, attachment trauma, and personality disorders, the label "treatment-resistant" may be applied prematurely and incorr

African swine fever virus (ASFV), the causative agent of African Swine Fever (ASF), is an infectious disease of swine that is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality in naive populations. ASFV is challenging to work with in vitro and the in vivo immune response remains an active area of study. Vaccine development, pathogenesis, and diagnostic assay development studies often require use of live swine housed in high-containment laboratories. Studies of this type are intended to obtain key data yet must minimize the pain and distress experienced by the animals. To implement humane e

Patients seeking to access voluntary assisted dying (VAD) are necessarily at the end of their lives. Hence, they are likely to be concurrently receiving care from institutions (community nursing services, health services, palliative care services, and aged care facilities) with different levels of participation in VAD. This article reports on the various institutional approaches to VAD based on eighteen semi-structured interviews with regulators from Victoria and Western Australia, representing fifteen institutions with varying levels of support for VAD. We generated five main themes from refl

The Dutch 'euthanasia and assisted suicide' practice guideline advises using 2000 mg thiopental to induce coma, followed by a muscle relaxant to cause death by respiratory paralysis. However, when a doctor administers such a high dose of thiopental as a bolus injection to a cachectic patient, there is a high likelihood of immediate death and other side effects, which can be distressing for the family. Doctors who administered less than 2000 mg have been reprimanded for not working according to current standards. Arguments are given concerning in which circumstances it is reasonable to use the

OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of deliberate termination of life (euthanasia) in intensive care.
DESIGN: Case report and review of the literature.
PATIENT: A 56-yr-old man experienced a bilateral hemorrhage in the pontine structures and the medulla oblongata, resulting in a locked-in syndrome. The patient was taught to communicate by eye opening. On day 10 after the hemorrhage, he was informed about his diagnosis and prognosis. He was asked if he wished prolonged care, but this was refused. He was offered withdrawal of fluids and ventilation under sedation or deliberate termination of life (e

OBJECTIVES: To study attitudes in the Danish population towards treatment of severely handicapped and extremely preterm infants and to define areas of consensus and controversy.
DESIGN: Mail-delivered questionnaire.
SETTING: Denmark. Survey sample--A random sample of 1080 persons aged from 18 to 45 years.
RESULTS: The overall response rate was 68%. There was strong consensus (more than 75% agreement) that life-prolonging treatment should be provided for an infant born after 24 weeks' gestation with respiratory distress and, for an infant with myelomeningocele, when the parents were in favou

Part 5 of the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services reminds us that death is necessary for the transition to eternal life. Thus, although Christians have a duty to preserve worldly life, a gift from God, that duty is not absolute. Suicide and euthanasia are never morally acceptable. On the other hand, life-prolonging therapy need not be used if it provides insufficient benefit or imposes an excessive burden. Directive 55 describes the comfort and care that should be given to dying patients. Directives 56 through 59 discuss the ethical norms for either using or forg

OBJECTS: Deliberate termination of life of newborns (involuntary euthanasia) with meningomyelocele (MMC) is practiced openly only in The Netherlands. 'Unbearable and hopeless suffering' is the single most cited criterion for this termination, together with the notion that 'there are no other proper medical means to alleviate this suffering'. In this paper, both (and other) statements are questioned, also by putting them in a broader perspective.
METHODS: First, a historical overview of the treatment of newborns with MMC is presented, concentrating on the question of selection for treatment. S

OBJECTIVE: To provide insight into the relationship between the drugs used for euthanasia and its notification.
DESIGN: Retrospective and descriptive.
METHODS: By comparing the drugs used for euthanasia according to different components of studies carried out in 1990, 1995 and 2000, insight was obtained into the drugs used in all cases of euthanasia satisfying the definition thereof (death-certificate studies), those cases of euthanasia that, in addition, were defined as such by the physician (physician interviews), and the cases of euthanasia that, in addition, had been reported (reported c

If euthanasia were legalized, clinicians would be under a duty to explain to patients requesting euthanasia what the prognosis and palliative options were. Anecdotal evidence suggests that some patients suffering from motor neurone disease may request euthanasia because of a fear of choking to death. The literature indicates that with competent palliative care this is unlikely to occur. It is assumed, for the purposes of argument, that responsible clinicians would accordingly reassure patients that such a fear was unwarranted, and that such a reassurance would cause patients for whom choking w

Is 'hopeless and unbearable suffering' a just criterion for the deliberate termination of life of newborns with spina bifida? Hopeless suffering, with no means of alleviation, is not applicable in the acute phase of spina bifida in newborns, but to the chronic suffering that comes later on as the result of pain and discomfort experienced by the patient. There is a need for a nationwide discussion on (a) how can we determine when acute or chronic suffering become hopeless and unbearable, and on what basis should a given situation be regarded as an 'emergency situation'?; (b) what qualifies as a

In order to describe the attitudes towards treatment of severely diseased newborns a questionnaire presenting four fictive situations concerning infants with myelomeningocele, trisomy 13, Down's syndrome and epidermolysis bullosa lethalis was mailed to all physicians employed at obstetric or paediatric departments in Denmark. The questionnaire was designed in two versions, differing as regards the parents' situation and attitude towards treatment in two of the situations. Each version was sent to half of the sample. Of 954 questionnaires 664 (69.6%) were completed and returned. The parents' si

BackgroundEuthanasia remains a highly debated issue in end-of-life care because it raises ethical concerns surrounding patient autonomy, relief of suffering, professional responsibilities, and the sanctity of life. Nurses and midwives frequently face these ethical challenges in caring for patients with advanced illness, yet evidence on their perspectives within sub-Saharan African cancer care settings remains limited.AimThis study explored nurses' and midwives' ethical perspectives and perceived implications regarding the potential legalisation of euthanasia in advanced cancer care in Ghana.Re

The objective of this study was to determine electroencephalographic and complementary physiologic changes in Xenopus leavis frogs after bath immersion in MS222. We also evaluated the addition of sodium pentobarbital injected intracoelomi- cally 2 h after MS222 immersion to achieve euthanasia. Frogs (n = 9) weighing 105.5 ± 8.4 g (mean ± 1 SD) were immersed in MS222 at either 1 or 3 g/L until anesthesia was achieved; a conductive stainless steel screw then was implanted in the skull on top of the outer pial surface of the brain. Frogs were immersed again in MS222 at the same concentration as p

Treatment for avian mycobacteriosis is still in its infancy and based on extrapolations from human medicine. The optimum drug choice, dose, or length of treatment has yet to be determined for most exotic animal species. Treatment should include multiple drugs for extended periods of time with appropriate monitoring of both drug levels and overall animal health. Risk to owners and handlers needs to be minimized through appropriate identification of the species of mycobacteri causing disease. More research is necessary on the pharmacokinetics of these drugs in other animal species and antibiotic

This paper focuses on the ethical dilemmas created by advanced technology that would allow patients with motor neurone disease to be sustained by artificial ventilation. The author attempts to support the patient's right to informed choice, arguing from the perspective of autonomy as a first order principle. The counter arguments of caregiver burden and financial restraints are analysed. In the UK, where active euthanasia is not legalized, the dilemma of commencing ventilation is seen to be outweighed by the problems of withdrawing this treatment. The lack of accurate data and protocols that w
