ERP evidence of heightened attentional response to visual stimuli in migraine headache disorders.

New findings from migraine studies have indicated that this common headache disorder is associated with anomalies in attentional processing. In tandem with the previous explorations, this study will provide evidence to show that visual attention is impacted by migraine headache disorders. 43 individuals were initially recruited in the migraine group and 33 people with non-migraine headache disorders were in the control group. The event-related potentials (ERP) of the participants were calculated using data from a visual oddball paradigm task. By analyzing the N200 and P300 ERP components, migr

Electrophysiological and neuropsychological effects of a central alpha 2-antagonist atipamezole in healthy volunteers.

We studied the electrophysiological and neuropsychological effects of acute modulation of central noradrenergic (NA) transmission using a specific alpha 2-antagonist atipamezole (ATI) in sic healthy volunteers. ATI had effects on resting EEG, auditory event-related potentials and neuropsychological tests. Quantitative EEG revealed increased total power in frontal, parietal and temporo-occipital areas without significant changes in the mean or peak frequencies. Event-related potentials showed no effects on the active attention-related processing negativity or the passive mismatch negativity, bu

Effect of Anodal-tDCS on Event-Related Potentials: A Controlled Study.

We aim to measure the postintervention effects of A-tDCS (anodal-tDCS) on brain potentials commonly used in BCI applications, namely, Event-Related Desynchronization (ERD), Event-Related Synchronization (ERS), and P300. Ten subjects were given sham and 1.5 mA A-tDCS for 15 minutes on two separate experiments in a double-blind, randomized order. Postintervention EEG was recorded while subjects were asked to perform a spelling task based on the "oddball paradigm" while P300 power was measured. Additionally, ERD and ERS were measured while subjects performed mental motor imagery tasks. ANOVA resu

Feedback processing in adolescents with prenatal cocaine exposure: an electrophysiological investigation.

Impaired cognitive control is a consequence of cocaine exposure. Difficulty with feedback processing may underlie this impairment. We examined neural correlates of feedback processing using event-related potentials (ERPs) in 49 prenatally cocaine-exposed (PCE) and 34 nondrug exposed (NDE) adolescents. Adolescents performed a reward-feedback task with win/no-win feedback in a chance-based task. We investigated amplitude and latency of the feedback-related negativity (FRN) and P300 ERP components and source-based estimates elicited during feedback processing. PCE adolescents had smaller P300 amp

The relationship between reaction time and response variability and somatosensory No-go potentials.

We investigated the relationship between reaction time (RT) and response variability and somatosensory Go/No-go potentials. Event-related potentials following electrical stimulation of the second (Go stimulus) or fifth (No-go stimulus) digit of the left hand were recorded from 16 subjects, and Go and No-go stimuli were presented at an even probability. The subjects were instructed to respond to the Go stimuli by pushing a button with their right thumb. We analyzed the correlation between RT and the N140 and P300 components, and between the standard deviation (SD) of RT and the N140 and P300. N

Neurophysiological markers of attention distinguish bipolar disorder and unipolar depression.

BACKGROUND: Attentional deficits are common in both symptomatic and symptom-remitted patients with bipolar disorder (BP) and major depressive disorder (MDD). However, whether the level of neurocognitive impairment in attentional processing is different between these two disorders, or not, is still unclear. Thus, we investigated the P300 event-related potential component as a biomarker of cognitive dysfunction to differentiate BP and MDD. METHODS: Twenty-three age and gender matched BP, 20 MDD and 23 healthy controls (HC) were part of a discovery cohort to identify neurophysiological differenc

[Endogenous potentials evoked by acoustic stimulus in children with idiopathic headache--preliminary report].

PURPOSE: Endogenous evoked potentials (P300) are elicited by several stimuli, and are electrophysiological consequence of cognitive processing. Abnormalities have often been reported in dementive syndromes, demyelinating diseases, metabolic disorders, CNS tumors, phacomatoses, neuroinfections, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and epilepsy. The role of this element of neurophysiological characteristics is debated in migraine, pato-genetically undefined, and other primary headaches. THE AIM: The aim of this research was to determine whether the parameters of endogenous responses to the

Temporal instability in brain activation: a novel paradigm for evaluating the maintenance of attention among substance dependent patients.

RATIONALE: Prior studies have demonstrated statistically significant but subtle differences in brain function between patients with a history of substance dependence (SD) and control groups. OBJECTIVES: The goal of the present study was to show that variability in brain activation over the trials of a cognitive task is more useful for revealing the putative impact of SD than analyses focusing on the amplitude of activation averaged over trials. The study also tested the additional contribution of antisocial personality disorder (ASPD)-a prevalent comorbidity that promotes both an early onset

ChatBCI, a P300 speller BCI with context-driven word prediction leveraging large language models, from concept to evaluation.

P300 speller brain computer interfaces (BCIs) allow users to compose sentences by selecting target keys on a graphical user interface (GUI) through the detection of P300 component in their electroencephalogram (EEG) signals following visual stimuli. Most existing P300 speller BCIs require users to spell all or the first few initial letters of the intended word, letter by letter. Consequently, a large number of keystrokes could be required to write an intended sentence, thereby, increasing user's time and cognitive load. There is a need for more efficient and user-friendly methods for faster, a

Influence of speech-language therapy on P300 outcome in patients with language disorders: a meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The patient's evolution in the audiology and speech-language clinic acts as a motivator of the therapeutic process, contributing to patient adherence to the treatment and allowing the therapist to review and/or maintain their clinical therapeutic conducts. Electrophysiological measures, such as the P300 evoked potential, help in the evaluation, understanding and monitoring of human communication disorders, thus facilitating the prognosis definition in each case. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the audiology and speech-language therapy influences the variation of P300 latency and

Neurophysiological Correlates of Near-Wins in Gambling: A Systematic Literature Review.

Identification of specific patterns of brain activity related to problem gambling may provide a deeper understanding of its underlying mechanisms, highlighting the importance of neurophysiological studies to better understand development and persistence of gambling behavior. The patterns of cognitive functioning have been investigated through electroencephalography (EEG) studies based on the near-win/near-miss (NW) effect. The main goal of the present study was to evaluate the neurophysiological basis of NWs and their modulation by gambling problems through a systematic review of event-related

The different role of trait empathy and state social exclusion empathy on subsequent feelings about gambling outcome:Evidence from event-related potentials and time-frequency decompositions.

Empathy plays an essential role in determining how we understand and respond to others' emotional experiences. Previous studies have mainly focused on the influencing factors of physical pain and monetary loss empathy, as well as on their effects on subsequent feelings. However, little is known about social pain empathy and its influence on subsequent feelings, and the role of personal trait empathy. In this study, we performed Cyberball Games and gambling tasks to explore the effect of social exclusion empathy on subsequent feelings for gambling outcomes (others' losses and gains) by analyzin

P300 abnormality in schizophrenic subtypes.

P300 and other long latency event-related potentials were recorded in 65 schizophrenic subjects and results were compared to findings in 119 healthy controls. Highly significant differences in P300 latency and amplitude were found between the two groups. Forty six per cent of schizophrenics had P300 latency more than two standard deviations longer than the mean for controls, 35% had a P300 amplitude smaller than the mean for controls by the same amount, and 24% were more than two standard deviations outside the mean for controls on both measures. These differences were independent of chronicit

Attentional processing in individual anxiety: Electrocortical correlates of threat- and safety-related declarative memory formation.

The ability to accurately detect and remember threatening stimuli is essential for adaptive behavior in potentially dangerous environments. While threat-related defensive processes are increasingly well understood, recent research has begun to emphasize complementary safety-related attention and learning mechanisms, processes especially relevant to the development and maintenance of pathological anxiety. Prior fear conditioning studies have identified a key role for late positive event-related potentials, particularly the P300 and late positive potential (LPP) in the formation of declarative m

OBJECTIVES: The late component of the event-related potential (ERP), P300 is a marker for cognitive brain functions. The objective of this study was to examine P300 parameters in dementia and in mild cognitive impairment (MCI), to examine whether there is a correlation between the changes in P300 parameters and the type and severity of dementia, and to determine P300 abnormalities in MCI in relation to the presence/absence of CT/MRI abnormalities. METHOD: Auditory event-related potentials, P300 were recorded in 28 MCI patients (14 of them with normal CT/MRI findings and 10 subjects with mild

Auditory and colored visual P300 in patients with sequelae of subacute myelo-optico-neuropathy.

To study the cognitive function in 13 patients with sequelae of subacute myelo-optico-neuropathy (SMON), event-related potentials (ERPs) were elicited with tones, clicks, and colored visual stimuli in different tasks. P300 latency was delayed, and P300 amplitude reduced or absent in 5 patients (38%), although neuropsychological assessment for dementia did not differ between patients and 21 age-matched normal controls. P300 and N200 latencies with the tone/tone auditory stimuli and N200 latency with the visual stimuli were significantly delayed, but the latencies of early components (N100 and P

The effects of metabolic syndrome and apolipoprotein E4 on cognitive event-related potentials.

To reduce the care burden of dementia, identifying whether the combined effect of metabolic syndrome and epsilon4 increases the risk of cognitive decline needs to be determined. Using the Cognitive Abilities Screening Instrument (CASI), 145 mentally healthy middle-aged and older adults were recruited to investigate the influence of metabolic syndrome and epsilon4 on cognitive event-related potentials (ERPs). The results showed no difference in CASI scores, N100 and P300 measurements and epsilon4 carrier percentage between participants with and without metabolic syndrome. The epsilon4 carriers

Predictive representation of other people's actions in joint action planning: an EEG study.

It has been postulated that when people engage in joint actions they form internal representations not only of their part of the joint task but of their co-actors' parts of the task as well. However, empirical evidence for this claim is scarce. By means of high-density electroencephalography, this study investigated whether one represents and simulates the action of an interaction partner when planning to perform a joint action. The results showed that joint action planning compared with individual action planning resulted in amplitude modulations of the frontal P3a and parietal P3b event-rela

Assessing auditory processing disorders in children with developmental dyslexia using auditory cognitive event-related potentials.

OBJECTIVES: It has been suggested that dyslexia is linked to a core cognitive deficit in phonological awareness tasks and/or in the processing of auditory stimuli. Auditory evoked potentials are a valid, objective measure of the accuracy of central auditory processing in humans. The aim of this study was to assess auditory evoked potentials in children with dyslexia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty-six children participated in the study. A set of hearing tests and the recording of complex event-related potentials (ERPs) were performed. RESULTS: Mixmatch negativity (MMN) and P300 waves were signi
