[Short-latency, brainstem, trigeminal evoked-potentials].

Short-latency, evoked-potentials were recorded from over the scalp in response to electrical stimulation of the upper lip, using the Microshev 4000 equipment (Microshev Co., Efrat). Normative data were obtained from 35 normal volunteers. The brain-stem, trigeminal evoked-potentials (BTEP) consisted of 4 distinct, well-reproduced waves evoked in less than 10 msec. The waves, named after their respective latencies, are thought to be generated in the preganglionic trigeminal nerve (T1), the postganglionic nerve entry zone (T2), in the trigeminal nucleus (T3) and the upper brainstem (T5). BTEP was

Evoked potentials in hereditary spastic paraplegia.

Pattern reversal visual evoked response (VER) and monaural stimulation of brainstem auditory evoked responses (BAER) were recorded from both sides in 25 patients (males 19; females 6) with hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP). Their age ranged from 15-52 (mean +/- SD; 25.2 +/- 22.5) years and duration of symptoms 6 months-9 (mean +/- SD; 4.2 +/- 3.6) years. A prolonged P100 latency was seen in 6 patients and BAER abnormality in 13. None of the patients had clinical evidence of brainstem involvement. It is suggested that VER and BAER abnormalities are due to segmental demyelination and fiber los

Kallmann's syndrome and chemosensory evoked potentials.

Kallmann's syndrome is generally assessed by history and subjective tests of olfactory function. In this study three patients suffering from Kallmann's syndrome were investigated with more objective techniques, including the recording of chemosensory evoked potentials (CSEPs). After testing olfactory function by means of a simple odor identification test, anosmia was confirmed in only one patient, since the other two patients were able to distinguish between several odorants. However, investigations in which CSEPs were employed indicated that all three patients had complete loss of their olfac

Evoked potentials in the Rett syndrome.

In order to have an electrophysiological approach to the pathogenesis of the Rett syndrome (RS), EEG testing together with evoked potential studies were performed in five children with RS, observed in our hospital during the last three years. All of the patients, aged from 18 months up to 4.5 years, had abnormal EEG: normal background activity with paroxysmal, epileptiform discharges was seen. In contrast with the abnormal EEGs, the evoked potentials were normal in each patient: brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP), visual evoked potentials (VEP), and central conduction time (CCT) of so

Somatosensory evoked potentials in neonatal jaundice.

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were studied in jaundiced and normal neonates on the day the highest bilirubin values were reached, 2-3 days later, and at five weeks. During the first week three groups were formed according to peak bilirubin values: A: greater than or equal to 250 mumol/l (n = 20), B: 125-250 mumol/l (n = 6), C: less than 125 mumol/l or no jaundice (n = 19). At five weeks 10 infants of group A were reinvestigated, together with 17 controls. Cervical (N13) and scalp SEPs (N19) were recorded with a variable number of stimuli. The SEPs of group B and C did not differ from

[Evoked auditory potentials in neonatal hyperbilirubinemia].

Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (greater than 20 mg%) is an audiological risk factor. In order to check early detection of bilirubin-induced neurological damage in the brainstem, 19 newborns were enrolled in the present study. The criteria was a bilirubin level ranging from 12 to 20 mg%. A likely mechanism for bilirubin intoxication may be the slowing and desynchronization of acoustic stimuli in the brainstem. Auditory brainstem responses were performed using non filtered clicks at 100 dB SPL (peak equivalent). Absolute and interpeak latencies of waves I and V were measured and correlated to bilir

Interweaving and overlapping of evoked potentials.

The refractory effect of one stimulus upon the response to a closely following stimulus in a different modality is much less than upon the response to a stimulus in the same modality. It is therefore far more efficient to record responses to stimuli in different modalities concurrently than to record each one separately. We evaluated 2 techniques for concurrent recording. Interweaving involves recording the response to one stimulus in the intervals between recording responses to other stimuli. Overlapping occurs when two or more responses are at times being simultaneously recorded. Interweavin

Evoked potentials following diazepam or fentanyl.

The effects of fentanyl or diazepam on somatosensory, visual and brainstem auditory evoked potentials were studied in 13 healthy patients scheduled for elective surgery. Following control recordings of evoked potentials, either diazepam 20 mg or fentanyl 200 micrograms was administered intravenously. Evoked potentials were then recorded twice in the subsequent hour. No significant changes occurred in the latency or amplitude of somatosensory, visual or brainstem auditory evoked potentials. Although dose-related changes in evoked potential latencies and amplitudes have been demonstrated with bo

Evoked potentials in hysteria and malingering.

Evoked potentials are often helpful in confirming the nonorganic nature of sensory symptoms in hysteria and malingering. In a retrospective analysis, such cases were found to comprise approximately 1% of referrals to a university hospital laboratory. However, the diagnostic usefulness of electrophysiologic tests is limited in some clinical settings: normal responses may be encountered in subjects with certain organic deficits, and "abnormal" responses can sometimes be produced voluntarily by normal subjects. In malingering--as opposed to hysteria--the role of the technologist in monitoring pat

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials in meningomyelocele.

The brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) of twenty-seven Myelomeningocele (MMC) patients were analyzed and compared with the results of a normal population. The longest wave V or V-I interpeak latencies were seen in patients with shunted hydrocephalus and cranial nerve defects. The shortest wave V and V-I interpeak latencies were found in patients without hydrocephalus. However, these latencies of MMC patients were significantly longer than the latencies of a normal population. Wave I latencies of all MMC subgroups were not significantly different from the results of the normal probands

[Somatosensory evoked potentials in intraspinal tumors].

SEPs have been recorded in 15 patients with spinal cord tumors (mostly ependymomas) and in 5 patients with cord compression due to meningiomas (3 cas), neuromas (1 case) or neurosarcoma (1 cas). All the patients have been operated on so that precise informations were available on the histology and the location of the tumor. SEPs were monitored during surgery in 8 patients. The main conclusions of this study are as follows: There was a good correlation between the somatosensory troubles for touch, vibration sense and joint position sense, and SEPs abnormalities, however, SEPs may be clearly abn

Visually evoked potentials in Friedreich's ataxia.

Visual evoked potentials to pattern-reversal stimulation have been recorded in 45 patients with Friedreich's ataxia. In six patients, no response could be obtained because of optic atrophy; altogether, pathological results were found in 25 patients (55%). Normal latencies were recorded in 20 patients (45%). No statistically significant connection could be drawn between the result of the VEP testing and visual acuity, age, or onset and duration of sickness, but there was a strikingly familiar accumulation of results. There is a good conformity between our results and the incidence of optic atro

Lumbosacral spinal evoked potentials in humans.

Evoked potentials in response to submaximal electrical stimuli to the peroneal or tibial nerves were recorded from the lumbosacral region in 18 normal subjects. Averaging of 128 responses from recording electrodes over spinous processes S1 to T11, with a reference electrode on the contralateral iliac crest, demonstrated potentials of 0.5 to 1.8 microV, with two well-defined negative peaks having latencies proportional to the distance between the stimulating and recording electrodes. The first peak originated from a traveling wave of depolarization in afferent fibers in the cauda equina, and th

[Method for studying spinal evoked potentials].

The authors describe a new method of examing evoked spinal potentials. Derivation is by means of unipolar needle electrodes which are ventrolaterally introduced into the cervical disk space as far as the posterior longitudinal ligament. Detection of a spinal potential following the stimulation of brachial and crural nerves allows to exclude the possibility of complete transverse lesion of the spinal cord or severing of the peripheral nerve or plexus.

Visual evoked potentials in Reye's syndrome.

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) induced by flash stimulation in a child who was recovering from Reye's syndrome with complaints of poor left-eye vision were recorded. Ophthalmological examination disclosed intact visual fields and normal visual acuity. Analysis of VEP's, however, showed a grossly abnormal configuration of wave forms, marked prolongation in latency and reduction in amplitude when the left eye was stimulated. Follow-up observation 3 weeks later showed parallel improvements in VEPs and subjective complaints. Thus, from VEP analysis, it may be possible to detect subtle changes in

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials and somatosensory evoked potentials in pontine haemorrhage. Correlations with clinical and CT findings.

Electrophysiological studies were performed on 17 patients with pontine haemorrhage. Most had had massive hypertensive bleeding, leading to death in 12 of them within 3 months. Of the 5 surviving patients, 2 had a poor outcome and 3 a moderately good outcome. Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were recorded in all patients, mostly with serial recordings. BAEPs were pathological in all patients. The most important finding was a reduction in amplitude or loss of waves. With a loss of waves after wave II bilaterally all patients died; the 2 pat

Reliability of Motor Evoked Potentials Induced by Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: The Effects of Initial Motor Evoked Potentials Removal.

INTRODUCTION: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a useful tool for assessment of corticospinal excitability (CSE) changes in both healthy individuals and patients with brain disorders. The usefulness of TMS-elicited motor evoked potentials (MEPs) for the assessment of CSE in a clinical context depends on their intra-and inter-session reliability. This study aimed to evaluate if removal of initial MEPs elicited by using two types of TMS techniques influences the reliability scores and whether this effect is different in blocks with variable number of MEPs. METHODS: Twenty-three healthy
