Evaluation of Auditory Evoked Potentials in Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a recurrent demyelinating neuroinflammatory disorder of the central nervous system. This study aimed to evaluate the neural conduction and sound information processing in individuals with NMOSD, through the analysis of auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) and cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs). METHODS: Twenty-four individuals (9-21 years old) were distributed into two groups: the study group (SG), diagnosed with NMOSD, and the control group, healthy individuals. Their ABRs and CAEPs were evaluated, and the results were exa

Long-Latency Auditory Evoked Potentials in Adults with Williams Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Williams syndrome (WS) is a genetic, multisystemic, neurodevelopmental disorder, in which studies have demonstrated the presence of auditory deficits such as conductive and sensorineural hearing loss, cochlear weakness, and subclinical signs of hearing impairment. However, few studies have assessed this population's central auditory system. PURPOSE: To analyze long-latency auditory evoked potential (LLAEP) in adults with WS and compare them with those obtained from neurotypical individuals with no hearing complaints. RESEARCH DESIGN: A cross-sectional observational study with sub

Assessing auditory evoked potentials of wild harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena).

Testing the hearing abilities of marine mammals under water is a challenging task. Sample sizes are usually low, thus limiting the ability to generalize findings of susceptibility towards noise influences. A method to measure harbor porpoise hearing thresholds in situ in outdoor conditions using auditory steady state responses of the brainstem was developed and tested. The method was used on 15 live-stranded animals from the North Sea during rehabilitation, shortly before release into the wild, and on 12 wild animals incidentally caught in pound nets in Denmark (inner Danish waters). Results i

[Brain stem auditory evoked potentials in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome].

To evaluate a possible brainstem role in pathogenesis of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, a study on brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP), has been conducted. 15 OSAS patients, medium and severe form, with organic pathologies of the upper respiratory tract have been evaluated. 15 normal subjects were compared as control. All the patients were subjected to audiometry, including total liminal audiometry, timpanometry, acustic reflex, and BAEP study. BAEP evoked with trains of cliks at 11 and 51 periods/sec., showed morphological alterations and a longer central conductance of time interv

Effects of caffeine and diphenhydramine on auditory evoked cortical potentials.

Caffeine and diphenhydramine are known to affect cognitive functioning in vigilance tasks. In this study, long-latency auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) obtained during concomitant performance of a visual vigilance task were examined for changes in response to administration of caffeine (200 mg) and diphenhydramine (25 mg). The AEPs were also analyzed for changes over time for up to two hours postdrug administration. Significant increases in N1 and P2 latencies and decreases in amplitude voltage were exhibited over time. The P2-N2 amplitude was significantly lower throughout testing after taki

Somatosensory and brainstem auditory evoked potentials in neurodegenerative system disorders.

Brainstem auditory (BAEP) and somatosensory (SEP) evoked potentials to median and peroneal nerve stimulation were investigated in 25 patients with neurodegenerative system disorders: 9 Friedreich's ataxia, 7 hereditary motor sensory neuropathies, 3 familial spastic paraplegia, 3 olivopontocerebellar atrophy, 1 ataxia telangiectasia and 1 abetalipoproteinemia. BAEPs were abnormal in 39%, SEPs to both upper- and lower-limb stimulation were abnormal in 63%. Serial evoked potential testing paralleled the clinical progression. SEPs were more frequently and severely altered than BAEPs suggesting tha

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials in severely malnourished children with kwashiorkor.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were recorded in a group of 22 children hospitalized for the treatment of severe malnutrition (kwashiorkor). Recordings were repeated after three weeks of treatment. The control group consisted of age- and sex-matched healthy infants. Abnormal BAEP interpeak-latencies (IPLs) were found in 32% of the kwashiorkor group in the initial recording and in 40% of this group in the follow-up recording. Abnormalities were evenly distributed between the I-III, III-V and I-V IPLs and in the majority of cases were unilateral. The influence of increasing stimulus

Wave I of early auditory evoked potentials in multiple sclerosis.

Early auditory evoked potentials (EAEPs) were recorded in a series of 71 consecutively examined patients suffering from clinically definite or probable multiple sclerosis (MS). Wave I abnormalities, i.e., delayed latency, with or without reduced amplitude, were observed in 15 such patients and were interpreted as due to MS in 8 of them. As EAEP wave I is identical with the potential N1 in electrocochleography and corresponds to activity of the most distal part of the acoustic nerve or the spiral ganglion, it is concluded that the peripheral part of the acoustic nerve is involved in about 10% o

Effects of postinatal stress on visual and auditory evoked potentials.

Maturation of visual and auditory evoked potentials (mainly the P3 wave) of 10 controls and of 10 infants exposed to recurrent postnatal stressful events (crying spells lacking organic basis) have been compared. The sourse of maturation of P3 waves may serve as indicator of growth and nature of cognitive processes (including perception). Recurrent srying spells seemed to delay appearance of visual P3 wave, prolonged its latency, and delayed appearance of visible differences in the shape of visual P3 wave upon exposure of the subjects to different visual experiences. A compensatory increase of

Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials and Visual Potentials in Kawasaki Disease: An Observational Monocentric Study.

Background: Kawasaki Disease is a systemic vasculitis, particularly involving coronary arteries. Rare involvement of other vascular districts is described, as central nervous system arteries, leading to a vasculitic neuropathy. Sensorineural hearing loss and alterations of evoked potentials are uncommonly reported complications. Methods: In an observational monocentric study, 59 children (37 males; 22 females; mean age: 2.7 ± 2.2 years) with documented Kawasaki Disease were enrolled. No risk factors for hearing loss and/or neurological impairment were identified in the cohort. Brainstem audito

The effects of a supratentorial mass lesion on brain-stem auditory evoked potentials and short latency somatosensory evoked potentials.

Nineteen patients with unilateral supratentorial mass lesion and without any evident clinical signs of transtentorial herniation were studied with Computed Tomography (CT), brain-stem evoked potentials (BAEPs) and central conduction time (CCT) of short latency somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs). Sixteen had tumours, two had intracranial haematoma and one had chronic subdural haematoma. CT detected the initial signs of transtentorial herniation in every case. Preoperative I-V interpeak latency (IPL) was significantly (M + 2SD) prolonged in 26% of cases on the lesion side and in 21% of cases

[Study of the mechanism of auditory adaptation by simultaneous recording of cortical auditory evoked potentials and cochlear microphonic potentials].

Auditory adaptation, apart from the effect of the neurotropic drugs, galanthamine, GABA and nanophyn on this adaptation, was examined in 35 rabbits exposed to white noise (90 dB, re 2.10(-5) Pa, 10 min) by concurrent recording of evoked potentials of the brain and microphonic potentials of the cochlea. The results suggest that the mechanism of auditory adaptation is determined by the processes that occur in the synapses of the auditory system central parts and is monitored by the sympathetic nervous system.

An Exploratory Study of Early Auditory Evoked Potentials in Cannabis Smokers.

Purpose Cannabis is widely used for medicinal and recreational purposes. Studies have evaluated its health benefits and consequences, although there is limited work on its effects on the auditory system. In this exploratory study, we evaluate the effects of cannabis smoking on early auditory evoked potentials. Method We investigated auditory brainstem response (ABR) and electrocochleography waveforms in 18 cannabis smokers (44% women, 54% men; M age = 23.06 years, range: 21-28 years) and 19 nonsmoker controls (63% women, 37% men; M age = 23.74 years, range: 21-33 years). [Auditory evoked potentials in patients after acute children's lymphoblastic leukemia treatment].

BACKGROUND: Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), and especially its treatment often leads to irreversible consequences in the central and peripheral nervous system. ALL and its treatment as well, may cause disturbances of central transmission of acoustic stimuli. THE AIM: To establish, if testing of egzogenic provoked brain stem potentials can be useful for evaluation of complications of ALL treatment. The issue of analysis was the influence of past ALL and type of therapy on parameters of egzogenic potentials triggered by acoustic stimulus (BAEP) in patients after termination of treatment.
