The value of brain stem auditory, visual and somatosensory evoked potentials and blink reflexes in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

Cervical and cortical somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) following electrical stimulation of the median nerve and blink reflexes (BR) following electrical stimulation of the supraorbital nerve were recorded in 30 normal subjects aged 20-49 years. Subjects aged 40-49 had longer SEP latencies than subjects aged 20-39 years. A total of 29 slightly affected patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) aged 26-49 years, including four patients without clinical signs (suspected MS) and 19 patients with signs indicating only one lesion (possible MS) were examined by low-rate random-stimulated brain stem

Auditory brain-stem (ABP) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) in an animal model of a synaptic lesion: elevated plasma barbiturate levels.

Experiments were conducted to determine whether a consistent pattern of auditory nerve brain-stem evoked synaptic lesion model in cats (elevated levels of the lesion model in cats (elevated levels of the barbiturate thiopental). The ABP in response to low (10/sec) and high (80/sec) stimulus rates was recorded. In order to differentiate between the effects of the elevated drug levels on axonal propagation and on synaptic transmission, the early components of the somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) were also recorded, with particular attention to the first SEP wave, which is solely an axonal ev

Clinical correlates of brain-stem auditory evoked potential variables in multiple sclerosis. Relation to click polarity.

The correlations between clinical signs and BAEP latency, amplitude and dispersion variables were investigated in 98 multiple sclerosis patients. A new dispersion variable, the wave IV-V "shape ratio" (SR IV-V), correlated most strongly with brain-stem signs (i.e., nystagmus). Severely reduced wave IV-V amplitude was frequently found in patients with vertical nystagmus or internuclear ophthalmoplegia, and interpeak latency (IPL) III-V correlated most strongly with cerebellar dysfunction (i.e., ataxia). The results may reflect different localizing ability among the various BAEP variables. The a

[Effect of binaural conductive hearing loss on maturation of acoustically evoked potentials (auditory brain stem response, middle latency response) in guinea pigs].

During the early development of the acoustic system a conductive hearing loss may alter the maturation of acoustically evoked potentials and affect the development of hearing. The present experiments were carried out in newborn guinea pigs with binaural conductive hearing loss. The external ear canals were plugged over a period of one month from the first day postpartum. During and after deprivation click-evoked Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABR) and Middle Latency Responses (MLR) were collected to analyze changes in the maturation of these potentials in comparison to untreated animals. Effect Of Electromagnetic Waves Emitted From Mobile Phone On Brain Stem Auditory Evoked Potential In Adult Males.

Mobile phone (MP) is commonly used communication tool. Electromagnetic waves (EMWs) emitted from MP may have potential health hazards. So, it was planned to study the effect of electromagnetic waves (EMWs) emitted from the mobile phone on brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) in male subjects in the age group of 20-40 years. BAEPs were recorded using standard method of 10-20 system of electrode placement and sound click stimuli of specified intensity, duration and frequency.Right ear was exposed to EMW emitted from MP for about 10 min. On comparison of before and after exposure to MP in r

To Study Brain Stem Auditory Evoked Potential in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus- A Cross- Sectional Comparative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Neuropathy is one of the commonest complications of Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Apart from having peripheral and autonomic neuropathy patients with type 2 DM may also suffer from sensory neural hearing loss, which is more severe at higher frequencies. However, few studies have done detailed evaluation of sensory pathway in these patients. In this study brain stem auditory evoked potential is used to detect the acoustic and central neuropathy in a group of patients with type 2 DM with controlled and uncontrolled blood sugar. AIM: To study brain stem auditory evoked potential in patie

[An analysis of the level and bilateralness of disorders of the brain stem auditory evoked potential in tumors of the posterior cranial fossa with different locations].

The method of stem auditory evoked potential was used in the examination of 39 patients with tumors of the posterior cranial fossa of various localization. The time indices of the response were analysed: the peak latency of components I, III, and V and interpeak I-III, III-V, and I-V intervals. The most coarse disorders were revealed in patients with tumors of the cerebellopontile angle (100% of cases), which were clearly lateralized. Changes of stem auditory evoked potential in patients with cerebellar tumors were encountered somewhat less frequently (in up to 90%) and the response was asymme

Differential changes in peripheral and central components of the brain stem auditory evoked potentials during the neonatal period in term infants after perinatal hypoxia-ischemia.

To identify any differences in dynamic changes between peripheral and central hearing after perinatal hypoxia-ischemia, we studied 80 term infants during the neonatal period by serially recording brain stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) at 60 dB normal hearing level. All BAEP wave latencies and the I-V interval increased significantly on day I (analysis of variance, all p < .001). Thereafter, the wave I latency decreased gradually with some variation. The wave V latency and the I-V interval increased further on day 3 and then decreased progressively. On day 30, neither the latencies nor t

Somatosensory evoked potentials and auditory brain-stem responses in congenital hypothyroidism. II. A cross-sectional study in childhood. Correlations with hormonal levels and developmental quotients.

We report the results of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) and auditory brain-stem responses (ABRs) done in 48 congenital hypothyroid (CH) treated children, early detected and aged 18 months, 3 and 5-9 years of age. We report also the results of SEP and ABR done in 9 3-year-old CH children, before and after a 1 month therapy interruption to reassess the thyroid status. The more frequent abnormalities were increased wave I latencies for 18 month and 3-year-old CH children. In some children, these increases were not associated with signs of otitis media. No significant difference was seen b

Cochlear Microphonic and Summating Potential Responses from Click-Evoked Auditory Brain Stem Responses in High-Risk and Normal Infants.

BACKGROUND: Examination of cochlear and neural potentials is necessary to assess sensory and neural status in infants, especially those cared for in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) who have high rates of hyperbilirubinemia and thus are at risk for auditory neuropathy (AN). PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether recording parameters commonly used in click-evoked auditory brain stem response (ABR) are useful for recording cochlear microphonic (CM) and Wave I in infants at risk for AN. Specifically, we analyzed CM, summating potential (SP), and Waves I, III, and V. The

Somatosensory evoked potentials and auditory brain-stem responses in congenital hypothyroidism. I. A longitudinal study before and after treatment in six infants detected in the neonatal period.

We report the results of a longitudinal study of auditory brain-stem responses (ABRs) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) performed in 6 children with congenital hypothyroidism. These infants were detected by the Quebec Network for Genetic Medicine and treated early. ABRs and SEPs were recorded both before and 2 weeks after the initiation of therapy and at 6 months of age. Before treatment, for SEP, we found increased wave N19, P22 latencies and N13-N19, N19-P22 interpeak latencies (IPLs) in congenital hypothyroid (CH) children. For ABR, there were increased wave I latencies with normal

A new descriptor of the dual character of the input-output behaviour of the cochlea, with implications for signal-to-noise ratio estimation of brain-stem auditory potentials evoked by alternating polarity clicks.

The signal-to-noise ratio based on a plus-minus average for residual noise estimation has been systematically computed for brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) evoked by alternating polarity clicks from threshold up to 100 dB nHL in subjects with normal cochlear function. The plus-minus averages have exhibited a systematic dual behaviour in close correspondence with the "L" and "H" portions of the latency-intensity functions: from threshold up to 50 dB SL ("L" segment) they faithfully reflect the post-averaging residual noise. From 50 dB SL upwards the plus-minus averages are contamin

Assessment of the effect of chemotherapy and radiotherapy on the auditory function of children with cancer.

Forty children with malignant disease underwent full audiological assessment with pure tone audiometry, tympanometry and measurement of brain stem auditory evoked potentials in an attempt to detect auditory dysfunction resulting from treatment. Significant auditory dysfunction was observed in 8 children. Three children with evidence of a conductive or sensorineural deafness on pure tone audiometry had normal brain stem evoked potentials. One child with a high tone hearing loss and 4 children with no detectable hearing loss on audiometry showed significant differences in the interaural interpea

Click-evoked responses from the cochlear nucleus: a study in human.

Recordings from the vicinity of the cochlear nucleus in 9 patients undergoing microvascular decompression operations to relieve hemifacial spasm, trigeminal neuralgia, tinnitus, and disabling positional vertigo were conducted by placing a monopolar electrode in the lateral recess of the fourth ventricle (through the foramen of Luschka), the floor of which is the dorsolateral surface of the dorsal cochlear nucleus. The click-evoked potentials recorded by such an electrode display a slow negative wave with a peak latency of about 6-7 msec on which several sharp peaks are superimposed. None of th
