Visual evoked potentials in children prenatally exposed to methylmercury.

Prenatal exposure to methylmercury can cause both neurobehavioral deficits and neurophysiological changes. However, evidence of neurotoxic effects within the visual nervous system is inconsistent, possibly due to incomplete statistical adjustment for beneficial nutritional factors. We evaluated the effect of prenatal methylmercury exposure on visual evoked potential (VEP) latencies in Faroese children with elevated prenatal methylmercury exposure. A cohort of 182 singleton term births was assembled in the Faroe Islands during 1994-1995. At age 7 years, VEP tracings were obtained from 139 cohor

Visual evoked potentials in patients with pineal gland cyst.

AIMS: The functional effect of the pineal gland cyst is difficult to evaluate with visual field examination. The aim of this study is to investigate the usefulness of visual evoked potentials (VEP) in patients with pineal gland cyst due to the possible compression on the visual pathway. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Black-and-white pattern-reversal checkerboard VEP were recorded in 75 patients (50 females and 25 males, mean age 26.3 ± 15.7 and 25.6 ± 17.6 years, respectively) with pineal gland cyst detected on magnetic resonance of the brain (subject group) and 75 age and sex-matched control subjects

Determining abnormal interocular latencies of multifocal visual evoked potentials.

PURPOSE: To describe methods for measuring interocular latency differences of multifocal visual evoked potentials (mfVEP) and for determining regions with abnormal interocular latencies in patients. METHODS: The mfVEPs from 100 individuals with normal visual fields and normal fundus examinations were analyzed. Individuals ranged in age from 21.6 to 92.4 years. The stimulus was a 60 sector, pattern-reversing dartboard display. Each sector had 16 checks, 8 white (200 cd/m2) and 8 black (< 1 cd/m2). Interocular latency was measured as the temporal shift producing the best cross-correlation value

The value of flash visual evoked potentials in albinism.

In albinism, the majority of temporal retinal fibers serving the nasal visual field cross at the chiasm and project to the contralateral hemisphere. This misrouting is seen in hemispheric asymmetries present in the visual evoked potential (VEP). Misrouting of retinal fibers was also thought to occur in dissociated vertical deviation, Prader-Willi syndrome, and perhaps carrier states of albinism. However, recent literature is reaching the conclusion we have drawn in our laboratory: only albinism shows VEP hemispheric asymmetries that reverse when the other eye is stimulated. Use of different st

Dose dependent effects of alcohol on visual evoked potentials.

The effects of various alcohol doses on components of the visual evoked potential were investigated. Using a repeated measures, Latin square design, five alcohol dose conditions were administered to ten male subjects: 0.00 (placebo); 0.28; 0.36; 0.54 and 0.72 g/kg total body weight. EEG responses to a reversing checker board stimulus were measured in a standard oddball paradigm. In the alcohol conditions, latencies of the P1 and P2 components of the VEP were unaffected. However, reaction time, and the latencies of N2 and P3 displayed significant dose related increases with increasing blood alc

Development of visual evoked potentials following intrauterine growth retardation.

Visual evoked potentials to flash (FVEP) were recorded in 23 symmetrically growth retarded newborns of between 32 and 39 weeks gestational age and 41 normally grown controls. At 9 months post term FVEP recordings were repeated in 14 of the growth retarded and 26 of the control infants. The development of two long latency negative components of the wave form of the neonatal FVEP was delayed in the growth retarded infants. The amplitude of a long latency negative peak in the 9 month post term FVEP was reduced in the growth retarded infants. We suggest that intrauterine growth retardation may aff

Visual evoked potentials in dissociated vertical deviation: a reappraisal.

Pattern reversal and flash evoked potentials were recorded in 13 children with dissociated vertical deviation (DVD). No electrophysiological evidence was found to support the notion that patients with DVD have an anomalous (albinoid) projection of visual fibres originating from the temporal retina of each eye. However, DVD patients had significantly smaller monocular and binocular pattern evoked responses than age matched controls. Explanations are given for this finding and for the occipital VEP asymmetries reported by other workers.

Visual evoked cortical and subcortical potentials in human albinos.

Albinism is a congenital condition in which hypopigmentation occurs. In addition to this abnormality there is a misrouting of the optic nerve fibers, with some fibers from the temporal retina following a crossed route at the chiasma and terminating in the contralateral cortical hemisphere. This contralateral preponderance of fibers from each eye should be recognizable from recording the visual evoked cortical potential over each hemisphere on monocular stimulation. Such a technique should produce evidence of responses of either increased amplitude or shorter latency over the contralateral hemi

[Visual evoked potentials: methodologic problems--variations of stimulus parameters].

The evaluation of visual potentials (VEP) evoked by pattern reversal includes the latency and amplitude of P100. An increase in the mean brightness or contrast of the checkerboard stimulus results in an increase in amplitude and a decrease in latency of P100. A square edge subtense of 20' in checkerboard pattern or a spatial frequency of 3-4 cyc/degrees in stripe pattern produce maximum responses. Transient VEPs are recorded at low repetition rates (less than 2 Hz), steady state VEPs at temporal frequencies above 8 Hz. In the latter condition the VEP takes the character of a sinusoidal train o

Visual evoked potentials in chiasmal gliomas in four adults.

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were recorded from four patients with surgically verified chiasmal gliomas. Despite good visual acuity, 6/12(20/40) or better in each eye, these patients showed substantially reduced VEP amplitudes to a diffuse flash stimulus and hardly detectable responses to a highly textured checkerboard-pattern stimulus. The dissociation between evoked electrical activity and visual acuity is noteworthy; this differs from previously reported findings in patients with extrinsic compressing lesions of the chiasm or with lesions of demyelinating disease, which usually reduce VE

[Visual evoked potentials in cerebrovascular disorders. Method and results].

Investigation of visual evoked potentials (VEP) by means of checkerboard inversion gives values with good reproducibility and low standard deviation for the latencies and amplitudes of VEP. In patients with scanty symptoms of cerebrovascular disease and without visual field defects, we found either differences of VEP amplitudes from side to another of over 25% (in relation to the larger value) or very small absolute values of the amplitudes (smaller than 3 mu V) as pathological values compared to control subjects. The latencies were normal. The method of investigation described helps towards o

Pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials in infants: gender differences during early visual maturation.

This paper investigates gender differences in the peak latency and amplitude of the P1 component of the pattern-reversal visual evoked potential (pattern-reversal VEP) recorded in healthy term infants. Pattern-reversal VEPs in response to a series of high contrast black and white checks (check widths 120', 60', 30', 24', 12', 6') were recorded in 50 infants (20 males, 30 females) at 50 weeks post-conceptional age (PCA) and in 49 infants (22 males, 27 females) at 66 weeks PCA. Peak latency of the major component, P1, was considerably shorter in female compared with male infants. Differences in

Are flash-evoked visual potentials useful for intraoperative monitoring of visual pathway function?

Flash-evoked visual potentials (VEPs) recorded from the scalp were used in a series of 35 patients with tumors along the visual pathway: 3 orbital tumors, 25 perisellar tumors, 4 intraventricular tumors, and 3 occipital lesions. Preoperatively, various combinations of impaired visual fields and visual acuity were observed in over 90% of the patients. A postoperative decrease in visual function was observed in 3 cases. Of the 25 perisellar lesions, 13 were operated through a standard frontotemporal craniotomy and 12 were operated through a transnasal-transsphenoidal approach. VEPs were highly s

Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials and Visual Potentials in Kawasaki Disease: An Observational Monocentric Study.

Background: Kawasaki Disease is a systemic vasculitis, particularly involving coronary arteries. Rare involvement of other vascular districts is described, as central nervous system arteries, leading to a vasculitic neuropathy. Sensorineural hearing loss and alterations of evoked potentials are uncommonly reported complications. Methods: In an observational monocentric study, 59 children (37 males; 22 females; mean age: 2.7 ± 2.2 years) with documented Kawasaki Disease were enrolled. No risk factors for hearing loss and/or neurological impairment were identified in the cohort. Brainstem audito

[Intraoperative Visual Evoked Potential].

In neurosurgery, the intraoperative visual evoked potential(VEP)has recently been used for the management of anterior skull base and parasellar tumors related to the optic pathways to prevent postoperative visual complications. We used light emitting diode photo-stimulation thin pad and stimulator(Unique Medical, Japan). We also recorded the electroretinogram(ERG)simultaneously to exclude technical errors. VEP is defined as an amplitude between the maximum positive wave at 100 ms(P100)and the prior negative wave(N75). In intraoperative VEP monitoring, reproducibility of VEP should be ascertain

The multifocal visual evoked potential.

With the multifocal technique, visual evoked potentials (VEPs) can be recorded simultaneously from many regions of the visual field. For the multifocal VEP (mfVEP), the patient views a display that typically contains 60 sectors, each with a checkerboard pattern. The display covers about the same retinal area as the 24-2 Humphrey visual field (HVF). However, due to the scaling of the sectors of the mfVEP display, the fields are sampled differently by the mfVEP and HVF. To assess local defects in the visual field, the mfVEP responses must be compared with normal controls. These comparisons requi
