Many neurological conditions, e.g., a stroke, can cause patients to experience upper limb (UL) motor impairments that hinder their daily activities. For such patients, while rehabilitation therapy is key for regaining autonomy and restoring mobility, its long-term nature entails ongoing time commitment and it is often not sufficiently engaging. Virtual reality (VR) can transform rehabilitation therapy into engaging game-like tasks that can be tailored to patient-specific activities, set goals, and provide rehabilitation assessment. Yet, most VR systems lack built-in methods to track progress o

Exercise videogames (exergames) are gaining popularity as tools for improving balance ability in older adults, yet few exergames are suitable for home-based use. The purpose of the current pilot study was to examine the effects of a 6-week unsupervised home-based exergaming training program on balance performance. Ten community dwelling healthy older adults (age: 75.9 ± 7.2 years) played a newly developed ice skating exergame for six weeks at home. In the game, the speed and direction of a virtual ice skater on a frozen canal were controlled using lateral weight shifts, which were captured usi

The positive effects of physical and sports therapy for strain dependent physical practice and improved quality of life (QoL) are well known. Nevertheless, the available capacities and problem-oriented therapies in the setting of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) are limited. We conducted a prospective, randomized study among 42 HSCT recipients in order to investigate the influence of exergaming on Nintendo Wii® or classical physiotherapy (PT) on physical fitness and psychological well-being. The trial included evaluation of muscle strength, endurance, physical activity, distress,

Subthreshold depression (SD) is highly prevalent among adolescents and increases the risk of developing major depressive disorder. Exergaming, an interactive form of digital physical activity, may enhance engagement and improve adherence compared with traditional exercise, making it a promising approach for adolescent mental-health promotion. This randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of an eight-week exergame intervention on depressive symptoms, anxiety, and sleep quality among adolescents with SD. A total of 51 students were randomly assigned to an exergame group (n = 26) or a

Exergames (EG) are interactive video games that require physical activity and use gamification to make exercise more engaging. EG interventions demonstrated various benefits for older adults including improved mental health, quality of life, and a reduced risk of falls. Enhanced cognition is considered one of the principal targets driving these benefits. This systematic review aimed to identify the neurobiological effects of EG interventions in healthy older adults and those with neurocognitive disorders. We systematically searched major databases for studies from inception up until June 2024

BACKGROUND: Older adults tend to experience difficulties in switching quickly between various reliable sensory inputs, which ultimately may contribute to an increased risk of falls and injuries. Sideward falls are the most frequent cause of hip fractures among older adults. Recently, exergame programs have been confirmed as beneficial tools for enhancing postural control, which can reduce the risk of falls. However, studies to explore more precisely which mechanism of exergaming directly influences older women's ability to balance are still needed.
OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to evaluate, in a sin

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental condition affecting approximately 7% to 8% of children and adolescents, characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Adolescence represents a period of heightened vulnerability, during which pharmacological treatments are frequently limited by adverse effects, suboptimal adherence, and partial response. Physical exercise, particularly high-intensity interval training (HIIT), has demonstrated superior effects on inhibitory control and inattention compared with moderate-inten

Gait initiation (GI) requires coordinated postural control and is often impaired in athletes with chronic ankle instability (CAI). Exergaming has been proposed as an innovative rehabilitation strategy, but its effects on GI kinetics compared with conventional balance training remain unclear. Thirty-four athletes with CAI were assigned to either an exergaming intervention or a balance training control group. Both groups underwent a 12-session intervention, with sessions held three times per week and each session lasting 60 minutes. Kinetic measures, including center of pressure (COP) displaceme

INTRODUCTION: Technology-facilitated, self-directed upper limb (UL) rehabilitation, as an adjunct to conventional care, could enhance poststroke UL recovery compared with conventional care alone, without imposing additional resource burden. The proposed pilot randomised controlled trial (RCT) aims to assess whether stroke survivors will engage in self-directed UL training, explore factors associated with intervention adherence and evaluate the study design for an RCT testing the efficacy of a self-directed exer-gaming intervention for UL recovery after stroke.
