An exoskeleton is a wearable device with human-machine interaction characteristics. An ideal exoskeleton should have kinematic and kinetic characteristics similar to those of the wearer. Most traditional exoskeletons are driven by rigid actuators based on joint torque or position control algorithms. In order to achieve better human-robot interaction, flexible actuators have been introduced into exoskeletons. However, exoskeletons with fixed stiffness cannot adapt to changing stiffness requirements during assistance. In order to achieve collaborative control of stiffness and torque, a bionic va

BACKGROUND: Despite the benefits of physical activity for healthy physical and cognitive aging, 35% of adults over the age of 75 in the United States are inactive. Robotic exoskeleton-based exercise studies have shown benefits in improving walking function, but most are conducted in clinical settings with a neurologically impaired population. Emerging technology is starting to enable easy-to-use, lightweight, wearable robots, but their impact in the otherwise healthy older adult population remains mostly unknown. For the first time, this study investigates the feasibility and efficacy of using

Developments in robotics, among which exoskeletons, have lately known a constant increase. Wanting to understand how these devices transform realities of both able and impaired bodies, I conducted multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork in research centers where exoskeletons are designed and sometimes used. At one of these sites, I was allowed to take part in a test for an exoskeleton developed for persons with neurological impairments, being thus given the possibility to literally become my research phenomenon and thus enter the algorithm of a device. Data about my own able body contributed to for

Robotic devices offer assistance to individuals with upper-limb impairments. Among different control strategies, assistance should specifically account for the weight of both the device and the wearer's arm without introducing any distortion to the kinematic behaviour. This study investigates how varying weight support levels in the Harmony exoskeleton impact hand spatio-temporal features and inter-joint coordination during a pick-and-place task. Eight healthy subjects performed the selected functional movement across five distinct levels of arm support. Results indicated that movement smoothn

Passive, full-leg exoskeletons that act in parallel with the legs can reduce the metabolic power of bouncing gaits like hopping. However, the magnitude of metabolic power reduction depends on the spring stiffness profile of the exoskeleton and is presumably affected by how users adapt their lower-limb joint mechanics. We determined the effects of using a passive, full-leg exoskeleton with degressive (DG), linear (LN) and progressive (PG) stiffness springs on lower-limb joint kinematics and kinetics during stationary, bilateral hopping at 2.4 Hz. We found that the use of a passive, full-leg exo

An important consideration in the design of a practical system to restore walking in individuals with spinal cord injury is to minimize metabolic energy demand on the user. In this study, the effects of exoskeletal constraints on metabolic energy expenditure were evaluated in able-bodied volunteers to gain insight into the demands of walking with a hybrid neuroprosthesis after paralysis. The exoskeleton had a hydraulic mechanism to reciprocally couple hip flexion and extension, unlocked hydraulic stance controlled knee mechanisms, and ankles fixed at neutral by ankle-foot orthoses. These mecha

Trunk exoskeletons are wearable devices that support humans during physically demanding tasks by reducing biomechanical loads on the back. While most trunk exoskeletons are rigid devices, more lightweight soft exoskeletons (exosuits) have recently been developed. One such exosuit is the HeroWear Apex, which achieved promising results in the developers' own work but has not been independently evaluated. This paper thus presents an evaluation of the Apex with 20 adult participants during multiple brief tasks: standing up from a stool with a symmetric or asymmetric load, lifting a unilateral or b

In recent years, several technological innovations have emerged to improve the rehabilitation of traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). Among them, robotic orthosis, also known as human exoskeletons, are prominent devices for lower limb therapy. Since the early 2000s, numerous clinical studies have begun to investigate the efficacy of these devices, demonstrating the beneficial effects of exoskeletons regarding the prevention and deceleration of the progression of complications following spinal cord injury and subsequent immobilization. Previous works also deal with physiological, psycho-social a

The development of assistive lower-limb exoskeletons can be time-consuming. Testing prototype medical devices on vulnerable populations such as children also has safety concerns. Mechanical phantoms replicating the lower-limb kinematics provide an alternative for the fast validation and iteration of exoskeletons. However, most phantoms treat the limbs as rigid bodies and fail to capture soft tissue deformation at the human/exoskeleton interface. Human soft tissue can absorb and dissipate energy when compressed, leading to a mismatch between simulated and human exoskeleton testing outcomes. We

Lower limb exoskeletons significantly enhance human functionality. However, simultaneously improving the load capacity of these devices while reducing metabolic costs presents a major challenge in the industry. This paper presents a lower limb exoskeleton that integrates both rigid and flexible structures to facilitate active assistance and passive load transfer at the hip joint. The load transfer experiments were conducted with weights of 10 kg and 15 kg. During static standing, the load transfer rates were recorded at 90.48% and 69.70%, respectively. In dynamic walking, these rates decreased

OBJECTIVE: Semi-active exoskeletons combining lightweight, low powered actuators and passive-elastic elements are a promising approach to portable robotic assistance during locomotion. Here, we introduce a novel semi-active hip exoskeleton concept and evaluate human walking performance across a range of parameters using a tethered robotic testbed.
METHODS: We emulated semi-active hip exoskeleton (exo) assistance by applying a virtual torsional spring with a fixed rotational stiffness and an equilibrium angle established in terminal swing phase (i.e., via pre-tension into stance). We performed

Assistive exoskeletons are increasingly used in rehabilitation settings, yet their adoption in real-world scenarios remains limited. This is partly due to the insufficient understanding of human-device interaction mechanisms. The process through which the central nervous system integrates external devices is known as "tool embodiment" and is primarily assessed through subjective questionnaires. This protocol aims to identify a quantitative marker of embodiment by leveraging the phenomenon of sensory attenuation, i.e., the modulation of sensory stimulation intensity perception as a function of

Workers in aeronautics face high risks of low-back disorders (LBDs). Although occupational passive back exoskeletons show preventive potential during trunk flexion tasks, few studies have been conducted in real workplaces. This field study aims to assess the effects of a rigid passive back exoskeleton on back neuromuscular activity, trunk kinematics and perceived discomfort, as well as the user acceptance. Ten male employees from an aeronautics manufacturer performed their routine polishing activity, later segmented into seven representative tasks, with and without the Laevo FLEX exoskeleton.

While the research interest for exoskeletons has been rising in the last decades, missing standards for their rigorous evaluation are potentially limiting their adoption in the industrial field. In this context, exoskeletons for worker support have the aim to reduce the physical effort required by humans, with dramatic social and economic impact. Indeed, exoskeletons can reduce the occurrence and the entity of work-related musculoskeletal disorders that often cause absence from work, resulting in an eventual productivity loss. This very urgent and multifaceted issue is starting to be acknowled
