Treatment outcomes for professional voice users.

Professional voice users comprise 25% to 35% of the U.S. working population. Their voice problems may interfere with job performance and impact costs for both employers and employees. The purpose of this study was to examine treatment outcomes of two specific rehabilitation programs for a group of professional voice users. Eighteen professional voice users participated in this study; half had complaints of throat pain or vocal fatigue (Dysphonia Group), and half were found to have benign vocal fold lesions (Lesion Group). One group received 5 weeks of expiratory muscle strength training follow

Oxygen uptake efficiency slope: an index of exercise performance and cardiopulmonary reserve requiring only submaximal exercise.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to evaluate, in adults, the efficacy of the Oxygen Uptake Efficiency Slope (OUES), an index of cardiopulmonary functional reserve that can be based upon a submaximal exercise effort. BACKGROUND: Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2,max), the most reliable measure of exercise capacity, is seldom attained in standard exercise testing. The OUES, which relates oxygen uptake to total ventilation during exercise, was proposed by Baba and coworkers (7) in a study of pediatric cardiac patients. They felt this submaximal index of cardiopulmonary reserve might be more practical than VO2max

Noninvasive measurement of the tension-time index in children with neuromuscular disease.

Respiratory muscle weakness is common in children with neuromuscular disease (NMD). We hypothesized that weakness puts them at risk for respiratory muscle fatigue, a harbinger of chronic respiratory failure. We therefore measured a noninvasive index of respiratory muscle fatigue, the tension-time index of the respiratory muscles (TT(mus)), in 11 children with NMD and 13 control subjects. Spirometric flow rates and maximal inspiratory pressure were significantly lower in the NMD group than in controls (43 +/- 23 vs. 99 +/- 21 cmH2O, P < 0.001). The mean TT(mus) was significantly higher in the N

Comparison of Forced Oscillation Technique, Lung Volumes by Body Plethysmography, and Spirometry in Moderate Persistent Adult Asthma.

BACKGROUND: Spirometry is used extensively, but airway oscillometry is gaining acceptance for evaluating obstructive airway disorders. Moderate persistent asthma requires daily treatment with inhaled corticosteroids (ICS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We aimed to examine the relationship between airway oscillometry and lung volumes, which are the markers of lung physiology in obstructive airway disease and spirometry in the real-world clinical setting. A total of 72 adults with moderate persistent asthma followed up in our outpatient department from November 2021 to August 2022, and their clinical

Intercostal muscle reflexes and sleep breathing patterns in the human infant.

Breathing variability and apnea characteristic of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep was investigated in a newborn infant with complete interruption of intercostal to phrenic neural pathways due to intrapartem transection of the cervical spinal cord. Breath-to-breath variability in inspiratory duration (TI), breath duration (Ttot), tidal volume (VT), and ventilation (VI) was significantly greater in REM than in quiet sleep and was similar to the variability in these parameters seen in normal infants. In addition, brief periods of diaphragmeatic apnea were observed during REM sleep. The phenomenon

Expiratory flow limitation in compressed air divers and oxygen divers.

Divers are exposed to dense gases under hyperbaric and hyperoxic conditions and, therefore, may be at risk of developing respiratory disease. Long-term effects on respiratory function have been found in commercial divers who perform deep dives. This study was conducted to detect possible lung function changes in scuba divers who dive in shallow water using compressed air or oxygen as a breathing gas. A cross-sectional sample of 180 healthy male divers (152 air divers and 28 oxygen divers) and 34 healthy male controls underwent a diving medical examination including body plethysmography, diffus

No effect of arm-crank exercise on diaphragmatic fatigue or ventilatory constraint in Paralympic athletes with cervical spinal cord injury.

Cervical spinal cord injury (CSCI) results in a decrease in the capacity of the lungs and chest wall for pressure, volume, and airflow generation. We asked whether such impairments might increase the potential for exercise-induced diaphragmatic fatigue and mechanical ventilatory constraint in this population. Seven Paralympic wheelchair rugby players (mean + or - SD peak oxygen uptake = 16.9 + or - 4.9 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1)) with traumatic CSCI (C(5)-C(7)) performed arm-crank exercise to the limit of tolerance at 90% of their predetermined peak work rate. Diaphragm function was assessed before

[Postoperative respiratory care and prevention of postoperative pulmonary complications by use of percutaneous intratracheal catheter].

A method of percutaneous intratracheal catheter (PITC) was studied for postoperative respiratory care and prevention of postoperative pulmonary complications. The oxygen was insufflated through the catheter persistently at 2-4 liters per minute. Successful results were obtained in 20 patients who were in poor pulmonary risk such as older age, major operation and pre-existing pulmonary insufficiency, revealing more effectiveness in oxygenation rather than other devices of oxygen supply. An experimental study was performed to evaluate its efficacy using dogs with respiratory impairment, which we

Upright body position and weight loss improve respiratory mechanics and daytime oxygenation in obese patients with obstructive sleep apnoea.

To determine whether upright body position and weight loss would improve daytime gas exchange in moderately obese patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSAS), 13 patients with mild or moderate OSAS were studied before and after weight loss. Pulmonary function tests, arterial blood gases and respiratory gas analysis were measured prior to and after a very low calorie diet (VLCD) period of six weeks. Arterial blood gases were measured in supine and standing positions and closing volume in supine and sitting positions before and after weight loss. In the upright position, there was a significan

Association between vitamin A status and lung function level in children aged 6--9 years in Wukro wereda, Northern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: In developing countries, studies using morbidity recalls to evaluate the benefits of vitamin A on respiratory health in children under 6 years of age have been inconclusive. This relationship has not been examined in older children. Spirometric measurements, an objective means of assessing respiratory health, require the subject's collaboration and have been successfully used in children over 6 years of age. This report describes a cross-sectional analysis of the relationship between lung function and vitamin A status in an area endemic to vitamin A deficiency. METHODS: The data o

Neurological and respiratory effects of lung protective ventilation in acute brain injury patients without lung injury: brain vent, a single centre randomized interventional study.

INTRODUCTION: Lung protective ventilation (LPV) comprising low tidal volume (VT) and high positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) may compromise cerebral perfusion in acute brain injury (ABI). In patients with ABI, we investigated whether LPV is associated with increased intracranial pressure (ICP) and/or deranged cerebral autoregulation (CA), brain compensatory reserve and oxygenation. METHODS: In a prospective, crossover study, 30 intubated ABI patients with normal ICP and no lung injury were randomly assigned to receive low VT [6 ml/kg/predicted (pbw)]/at either low (5 cmH2O) or high PEEP

Dynamic respiratory mechanics and exertional dyspnoea in pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) may exhibit reduced expiratory flows at low lung volumes, which could promote exercise-induced dynamic hyperinflation (DH). This study aimed to examine the impact of a potential exercise-related DH on the intensity of dyspnoea in patients with PAH undergoing symptom-limited incremental cardiopulmonary cycle exercise testing (CPET). 25 young (aged mean±sd 38±12 yrs) nonsmoking PAH patients with no evidence of spirometric obstruction and 10 age-matched nonsmoking healthy subjects performed CPET to the limit of tolerance. Individual Changes in Respiratory Compliance Upon Immersion May Predict Susceptibility to Immersion Pulmonary Edema.

BACKGROUND: Immersion pulmonary edema (IPE) is a frequent diving accident, and it is the primary cause of hospitalization for young military divers during training. The objective of this study was to identify immersion-induced parameters predicting individual susceptibility to IPE. METHODS: Eighteen experienced male divers having completed at least 100 dives were recruited. Eight divers had previously been hospitalized for IPE (IPE), and the other ten had never developed IPE (non-IPE). The two groups were matched for age, BMI, and number of dives performed.
